Chapter 1 - Pearl

"You're going to fall."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You're going to fall."

"What are you, a parrot?"

"You better hope a Stiff runs for a medic when you go because I will be down here laughing my ass off."

Pearl glanced down. Big mistake. Her little brother was at least ten feet below her, standing at the foot of the helix statue with his arms crossed.

"For the last time, I'm not going to fall."

"School starts in ten minutes."

Pearl swore and started hastily climbing down.

"Slow down! You're gonna fall!" Grian yelled. Pearl huffed.

"Up or down? Pick!" She heard Grian grumble under his breath as she reached a suitable height to jump down from. That being like five feet, of course.

"Are you insane?" Grian hissed.

"Nice jump!" A pair of Dauntless girls in black hollered from the front steps of the school. Pearl smirked at her brother and tossed her hair over her shoulder before strutting towards the school.

"You are going to get yourself killed," Grian huffed, running to catch up with her.

"Am I?" Pearl asked him loftily.

"Yes!"

Pearl started walking faster, hoping to ditch her short sibling. Grian stubbornly kept pace with her.

"Don't you have class?" she asked him.

"I want to watch the Dauntless jump off of the train."

"You want to make sure I get to class safely."

"That too."

"Candor don't lie."

"That wasn't a lie. It is a valid reason for me going this way."

Pearl stopped by the door to her first block, Algebra I. Grian waved and continued on his merry way, and Pearl ducked inside, heading for her seat near the windows. The Amity girl that sat next to her greeted her with a smile, which Pearl quickly returned. She hadn't bothered to learn the girl's name. Hell, she hadn't bothered to learn anyone's name. The only names she'd have to learn would be ones in her future faction.

Which she would find out later.

Pearl shuddered slightly. The Amity girl noticed.

"Are you alright, love?"

"Not really. Nerves."

"I'm sure you'll do great! You'll find the faction you belong in!" The girl looked so excited that Pearl had to nod and smile, not saying anything, because, of course, Candor don't lie. As the rest of the class filed in, Pearl found herself studying them, wondering where they would go.

The mousy boy with strange yellow eyes in Abnegation gray seemed very content, from what Pearl had seen, so she guessed that he would stay where he was. Abnegation-borns seldom transferred.

The sweet boy in Dauntless black, who was always ready to share notes or tutor students, would most likely switch. Amity or Abnegation, maybe.

The brunet in Erudite blue who almost never stopped talking would probably be Candor. He'd fit right in.

But where would Pearl fit?
