CHAPTER FOUR » RETURN
"Nothing is ever a one off thing with you."

"Liam wants to catch a Ghost Rider," I told Brett over the phone as I leaned against the wall of the secluded library corner, my eyes scanning over the books on the sheleves. "Scott told him to go ahead with whatever plan him and Hayden have come up with."

"Is Liam stupid?"

"Do you really want me to answer that?" I asked, shaking my head. "Scott wants me to do what I can to help but–" I cut off with a sigh. "I think it's a pretty shit idea."

"Why don't you do something else to help then?" He responded.

I groaned, peeling my back away from the wall. "Like what?"

"Maybe, I don't know, you could do some research into why you can suddenly see into the past as well as the future," he said, a hint of sarcasm tainting his voice.

"Are you seriously still annoyed at me for not telling Scott?" I questioned, running my hand over a bookshelf. "It was probably a one off thing. A clear flashback or something–"

"Nothing is ever a one off thing with you, Becca," he scoffed, and I couldn't help but think he had a fair point. "Plus, you told me that it felt like more than a flashback. You could feel your emotions, and his. So, you need to stop avoiding it and do some research."

"Fine," I gave in, unable to be bothered to argue any further. "I'll call you if I find anything."

I hung up the phone, slightly agitated by the exchange with Brett. I mean, admittedly, I suppose I was avoiding the situation slightly, but it wasn't as if it was a huge issue or discovery anyway. Plus, what Scott didn't know didn't hurt him.

I headed over to one of the many free library laptops, clicking on the internet browser and thinking about what would give me the best answers, before settling on 'seeing vividly into the past.'

"Retrocognition," I mumbled to myself, almost feeling the need to laugh. "The opposite to precognition."

So how the hell is that supposed to work?

I clicked on the first web link, reading through the description.

The user can discern the past and past events using various means, usually entering a trance while seeing and hearing a noted past event, whether it be concerning themselves or of an unfamiliar lineage in a past occurrence. Occasionally spontaneous.

"Oh cool, like what Blindfold had," a female voice said from behind me, startling me. I sat up straighter, annoyed at the person for sneaking up on me like that.

"Who?" I asked before I'd even turned my head around to face them.

"You know, from the marvel comics," they replied. The air in my throat tightened and I quickly whipped my head around, recognising the girl's voice. "Hey, Bex."

I practically dived out of my seat, causing a bit of a crash, which probably gained a lot of attention, although I didn't care. I threw my arms around my childhood best friend, an elated feeling overwhelming me. She laughed, the sound blissfully ringing in my ears.

"What are you–" I cut myself off, shaking my head in disbelief. "Why are you– oh my god Vee," I rushed out as I pulled away from the hug, my eyes glancing over my former friend. Venus Every had changed a lot from middle school. She was much taller, a lot taller than me that was for sure. Her hair was a lot darker and longer, and not big and frizzy like it used to be. She was absolutely gorgeous, and I was super jealous.

"I see you're still the most fashionable one out of the both of us," she said with a chuckle, her eyes appearing to scan over my outfit. "Anyway, surprise, I'm back," she chirped, adding in jazz hands for effect, causing me to chuckle. "So where is your loser brother and his dorky best friend?"

My mouth fell open in shock, and I struggled to regain my composure again. She remembered Stiles? "You– I– I mean–"

"Everything okay?"

"Yeah," I choked out, racking my brain for a decent lie. Think, think, think. "Scott's with friends...and Stiles– Stiles went away for a while."

"Damn, I was hoping to catch up with them," she said, her bright smile seeming permanent on her face. "Anyway, are you free to hang out?"

~

Venus told me about her time in New Orleans, and the reason they moved back, which was purely just because it didn't match up to Beacon Hills. I found it quite amusing how Venus couldn't wait to come back to this town, yet I was dying to leave it.

I told her what she'd missed whilst she was gone, leaving out the parts about the supernatural obviously. She listened intently, swearing to get revenge on Liam when I told her all about my ex boyfriend. I knew for sure that Venus and Liam definitely wouldn't get along.

We were both sat on a low wall, the hot sun on our backs. I held a small ice cream tub in my hand, trying to savour the peanut butter taste – an interesting flavour I hadn't even considered trying until now.

"Oh, fancy seeing you here, Rebecca," I glanced over, spotting Brett stood to my left with raised eyebrows.

"Why are you here?" I hissed, giving him a glare, irritated that he'd crashed my hang out time with Vee.

"Aren't you going to introduce me?" He shot back before glancing up at Venus with an innocent grin. "Hi, I'm Brett."

"Venus Every," she introduced, holding her hand out for him to shake. "Nice to meet you, Brett."

"Excuse me one moment," I told her, giving her an assuring smile that hopefully sent vibes that everything was well and good. I hopped down from the wall, grabbing Brett by the collar of his jacket and pulling him into a corner. "What, are you stalking me now?"

"Get over yourself, princess," he rolled his eyes, making me huff in annoyance. "Anyway, is she the best friend who left for New Orleans?"

"Yes."

"Awesome," he gave me a cheesy grin, glancing over my shoulder, obviously back at Venus. "Think you can put in a good word?"

"Absolutely not."

Brett cast his eyes back over to me, a pouty look on his face, one that reminded me of a child that couldn't get his own way. "Why are you spoiling my fun?"

"She's too good for you," I told him bluntly, shaking my head to get rid of any thoughts of my two best friends dating. God, that would be horrific...I'd be the third wheel. "Anyway, get lost we're trying to catch up."

"May I remind you, it's not a good idea to become super close with any human who you have no intention of informing about the supernatural," he said as I rolled my eyes at his words. "Also, the Ghost Riders are kind of a thing so–" I whacked him on the chest, causing him to step back, placing a hand on his heart over-dramatically.

"I'm not letting the Ghost Riders come anywhere near her," I said firmly, my jaw clenching at the thought of that. I wouldn't let it happen, I couldn't.

"This whole protective thing is cute and all but–"

"There are no but's, Brett," I interjected, glancing behind me to see Venus watching the both of us with an unreadable expression. "Now, would you just leave?"

Brett suddenly began to frown, his gaze set on Venus again. "Are you getting any odd vibes from her?"

"What?" I asked, glancing behind me to see my friend happily eating her ice cream. I turned back to Brett, confused as to what he was getting at. "No?"

His eyes lingered on her again as he spoke. "I don't know, something feels weird. I mean, you knew she was coming back, right?"

"No," I answered again, completely and utterly baffled by his words now. "What are you talking about?"

"Last night, you were having one of those psychic dreams again," he said. "You kept mentioning her name."

"I don't remember that?" I said with a questioning tone, trying to cast my mind back to last night. I didn't even remember having a dream. "Brett–"

He finally broke eye contact with Venus, looking back down at me again with a dismissing shake of his head. "Nevermind."

"No–" I started as he began to step away. I grabbed his arm. "Tell me–"

"I've got to go," he said, his eyebrows drawn in confusion as he shrugged out of my grip. "Have a good time."

"Brett–" I started, but he began walking away. "Brett–"

It was clear he wasn't going to listen to me, so I headed back to Venus, who was finishing the last few spoonfuls of her ice cream.

"Everything okay?" She asked as I pulled myself back onto the wall.

"I'm not sure," I said, effortlessly digging my small plastic spoon back into my, now slightly melted, ice cream.

"Who is he?" She inquired, her eyes watching me closely. "A friend?"

"Yeah, he's my best friend," I responded, feeling like my mood had been completely shattered by my conversation with Brett. "Sorry, things have been...odd lately."

"It's fine," she waved it off. "He seems to really care about you."

"Yeah," I mused, suddenly not feeling hungry anymore. Something just didn't feel right all of sudden. I don't know what it was, or how it all changed so quickly, but I suddenly felt really on edge. "Hey, my mom's expecting me home soon. But I'll see you at school tomorrow, yeah?"

"Sure," she said brightly as I reached for my bag, putting the straps over my shoulder as I slid down from the wall again. "See you tomorrow, Becca!"

I gave her a small parting smile as she waved me off. As soon as my head turned back around, the smile dropped from my face.

I felt unsettled.

~

"Malia, enough!" I heard Scott shout as he pulled her away from somebody. I frowned, watching in utter confusion as I saw a bloodied and battered Theo Raeken on the floor.

I hated being the last one to arrive.

"What the hell is going on?" I asked, closing the front door shut behind me. I received no response as Liam and Scott pushed Malia back against the wall to restrain her. "Hey. Slow down, okay," Scott started softly. "He's going back in the ground."

"You can't!" Liam immediately defended, making me raise my eyebrows at his statement. "He remembers Stiles."

"I remember Stiles," I countered. "Scott remembers Stiles. Lydia and Malia remember Stiles. What's your point?"

"The Dread Doctors knew all about the Wild Hunt," Liam said, turning to my brother with a hopeful glint in his eyes. "He can help us."

"Or he could kill us," I pointed out, stepping forwards as I gestured to the Theo, who was still grunting in pain on the floor. Why the hell had they even brought him back? He deserved to rot in hell.

"He's my responsibility," Liam bit back. "Noshiko gave me the sword."

"Oh, and that suddenly makes you able to make all these wonderful decisions?" I asked with a scoff, as Liam gave me a harsh glare in response.

Theo sighed heavily, and I could feel a sarcastic comment brewing. "It's so awkward when Mom and Dad fight."

"Shut up!" I snapped, alongside my brother and Liam.

"You guys are right," Hayden spoke up, looking between Scott, Malia and I. "If Theo tries anything, we'll send him back to the Skinwalkers."

"If there are any of us left to even do that!" I exclaimed, raising my voice. I couldn't believe this was even up for debate. I wanted to just walk back out the door.

Hayden kept her cool, addressing me calmly. "But for right now–"

"He goes back now," Scott interjected, speaking firmly.

"Except Liam's the one with the sword," Theo quipped, causing frustration to intensify within me.

"Shut up!" I shouted again, in unison with the others. Scott and Liam shared a look and began to head into the other room until I grabbed Scott's arm, lowering my voice as he turned to listen to what I had to say. "Venus is back."

"Venus Every?" He asked quietly, his eyes widening slightly.

I nodded. "And she remembers Stiles."

"Who's Venus?" Liam spoke up before Scott got the chance to reply to me. I stood, my gaze lingering on my brother, who seemed to be thinking things through in his mind.

"Do what you have to do," he eventually told me, and I nodded as him and a hesitant Liam began to head into the other room.

"Malia..." Hayden started when she noticed neither of us moving, instead we were both staring at Theo. "Rebecca–"

"Can you give me a second alone with Theo?" Malia said, glaring at him.

"Why?" Hayden asked, as if the reason wasn't obvious.

"So I can kill him," she said bluntly, her jaw clenching. I couldn't help but be amused by how casually she answered.

"Okay, look, I know that there's mixed feelings all around," Theo started, whilst Malia and I shared an annoyed look. "But I might be your only option to stop the Wild Hunt."

"Let's kill him."
