Chapter 10
Should I make this part longer or is it fine?
****
I stare at the two school boys sleeping on the couch filling the almost silent room with their barely audible snores and breathing pattern. Inhale 5, exhale 4. I smile and push them off the couch slightly crumpling the uniform they're wearing. They must have been waiting for me to see them off,
"Wake up now orphans, it's time to go to school otherwise you'll be late. Chop chop!" I clap my hands and usher the sleepy boys out of my apartment. Now time to get ready to walk back to my one of a kind hometown. I smile, I'm going back to Devil's spine, ironic since one of my many names is red devil.
I run into my room and pull up my black ripped jeans and put on a crumbled while top on. I slide my jacket on and slip on my worn out pair of black combat boots, I lace 'em up and whistle. Wolf comes running and we make our departure to my welcoming hometown. Curious glances are passed to Wolf and I as we walk towards the deathly area. As Wolf crawls under the opening a fairly large hole by the steel fence I climb over, we both meet on the other side and look around the ghostly area. It's quitter than I remember, I smile and walk pass the shady stands, the dodgy people and the Horney hookers. Now where is the weapon place again...
Oi God or author or reader or whatever... keep my identity a secret, I don't want my uncle to realise I'm his nephew that killed his sister... unfortunately for me he's the guy that sells all the quality weapons for a worthy price. He's one of the strongest, men in this sector. But like the rest he's fearful of the scum we call police. I spit on the sidewalk, the hobo I spat by glares at me I smirk at his stubbly raging face. Wolf growls at him and the hobo backs off so some people are scared off some dogs that look like wolves, I ruffle Wolf's fur and we continue to walk to my uncle's famous alleyway in which the weapons are sold.
To be honest I wouldn't mind my uncle's wrath but one person who I doubt but definitely see is one specific man, . I shiver at the thought of his bulging dark grey eyes and stained teeth, UGH I just despise that guy. That reminds me am I supposed to address my uncle with honorifics or not... I shake my head of my thoughts and walk into the alleyway. I lick my lips as my eyes scan over all the daggers and guns.
"Oi old man can I get the " My uncle grunts in response and bends down to pick up the four different sets of bladed weapons, "How much?" the man's wrinkled eyes widen by a fraction when he sees my smiling face, cigarette he's sucking on falls from his mouth onto the gravel. A grin dances on his light features,
"Wait outside of your old home for about a maximum of an hour and you can have all these bad boys for free." I nod and walk north of the alley,
"I guess we're going back home for a bit, huh boy." I look down at my Utonagan who barks in response, "Do you think mum's going to be making her famous stale but slightly salted rice balls?"
Wolf's ears flop down and he lets out a small whimper, I sigh and apologize quietly but loud enough for him to hear. Finally, after about fifteen minutes of walking to my grey slightly stable former home, I stroll in and leave my shoes by the door which I just closed. Mum would always make Wolf sits by my shoes and stares at me urging to continue to walk into the house, I sigh and comply. Mum would always scold me for not taking off my shoes and leaving them by the door.
I stroll into the living room where a single chair hands into the centre, I sit on it with both hands planted firmly on my knees. I remember we couldn't afford couches back then, we could only deal with the chairs that came with the house. When she was still here she would make me sit in front of her, with my back facing her, we would talk about our days whilst she was picking out the dirt from my dark locks of hair. I decide to walk towards the kitchen expecting mum to be there making the plain rice balls. But she wasn't... of course she wasn't... I wipe my hand over the dusty table top and recall when I would've finished helping uncle I would rush back home in the kitchen to see: a small plate of three to five ball of rice on the table and mum washing the dirty dishes with freezing tap water. She would tell me off when attempted to touch the food with my dirty hands so I would have to wait for her to finish the dishes so I could wash my hands, only then we could eat together. Most of the times I would get the left over rice ball because mum would always make an odd amount - but I never question her- and other times I would lie to say that I wasn't really hungry and we would half the last rice ball, but that was when I was a bit older around four five years of age and I noticed how much mum was suffering. That's why I always hated when people would show up to our door and we would have to invite them in and share our dinner meaning mum would eat even less, then after that even smaller dinner I would be sent out so I would walk to where my friend would always be scavenging for scraps. I would always come back in the morning around eight when that happened.
I sigh and wipe the dust on my black trousers and walk into our shared room which would always smell weirdly. I remember all those nights when I couldn't sleep but mum would and she would hold me tightly to her large chest ensuring that that no one would take me. Sometimes she would be crying in her sleep so I would wipe away her tears and watch as a small smile grazed her lips as she murmured my birth name soundly. I sit on the stiff bed and look at the ceiling, more cracks have branched from the sole crack that thundered from the corner when I was a baby and threw something at the ceiling whenever I would have a tantrum. I smile at the thought; mum must have really wished that she aborted me at that moment.
But that's the special thing about her, she wasn't like the other woman of the area that would abandon or even kill their new-borns, she was one of the few who wanted to give a child a decent life. Even though we were definitely one of the weakest and poorest of the area at that time, she would always try to make my life seem as luxurious and happy just like the rich brats on the other side of town. Nevertheless, she would always make sure that I would uphold my manners and responsibilities, she would always remind me about the future and tell me about how well I should treat my partner and always be grateful for what I have. Every night she would repeat 'True love and true friends are the hardest things to find.' And would reply with an 'I love you'. She would kiss my head and she would fall asleep almost instantly unlike me.
The front door creaks open, I walk towards Wolf to see my uncle holding a large bag and a smaller teared fabric bag.
"'ere, take your Goddy weapons." Uncle throws me the teared bag which I catch with ease, the two of us stand in a thick silent atmosphere so thick you could slice through it with a butter knife. We stare in each other's unreadable eyes, "so brat," he breaks the silence and lights a cigarette, "Why are you 'ere." My eyes smile as his rough voice questions me,
"Just for these, how've ya been?" I hold up the bag,
"Ok, you?" I respond with a fine and look towards the kitchen,
"Did you bring any rice?" I lock my eyes with his dark ones, he tosses me a small packet of rice, "care to have a small lunch with your only nephew." I hum and walk into the small kitchen and set the bag of weapons on the table. He grunts and follows me in (after taking off his shoes and placing them besides Wolf) and leans on the wall inspecting as I pour the grains of jasmine rice into a bowl and wash them with the freezing tap water three times. I get a fairly large pot and pour in the rice and then some clean cold water. I slap the lid on and bang the gas stove on, as the rice starts to boil I wash the used bowl and then clean the table top.
"You look just like her." Uncle mutters to himself, a small smile grazes my lips as I continue to wipe the dust away. My uncle puffs out some smoke and tosses the lit cigarette out the window.
The rice finishes boiling and I let the grains cool down before I start to mound them into balls. The smell of the jasmine rice spreads through the thick air of the house, I grab the small pouch of salt Uncle put on the table to put into the rice and mix it in. I take a handful of the salted rice and roll it into a ball and place it on a light grey plate. I continue to do this until there is no more rice and seven balls of salted jasmine grains fill the rounded plate. Uncle reaches to grab a ball of rice but I slap his hand out of the way, "Wash your hands first." I mutter and grab a ball and give it to Wolf who barks in thanks. I walk back into the kitchen where Uncle is drying his hands with my bag, he looks up at me and grins for the first time,
"Shall we eat?" I nod and simultaneously we both bite into the rice, we smile as we eat the balls of rice hungrily, after our short snack I place the plate in the sink and wash it. "They tasted just like hers." He coughs I look at the old man,
"Don't flatter me, all these years I've been living off cereal, bread with occasional apples and milk. I can't bring myself to buy rice other there. Only here I can eat it without feeling this unfamiliar pain in my chest." I clutch my heart and my uncle's eyes widen by a fraction, well what do you expect our family basically only shows happiness, fake happiness and anger.
"You look so much like her that it hurts to look into your eyes and watch that smile fall on your lips." He murmurs to me and combs his rough fingers through my hair,
"yeah well you and mum are practically identical, it's just that you're a tad bit scarier looking and you're hairier and you'r-" I start to list but I get cut off,
"Yeah, yeah, I get it. But you look like the younger male version of her and Autumn will be coming for you and your pack to finish off the business he started with your mum. So do us all a favour and kill him and his followers with your buddies." He smirks and chucks his lit cigarette out the window, my eyes widen
"How did you-"
"Brat you're a wanted criminal whose bounty has increased tenfold since you massacred the officers in your area. Not only are you one of the most wanted people in town but you're our hero, you're the symbol of hope in Devil's spine. You have no idea how proud we are of you and that you were born here. But I'm not sure if your mum would be too proud that her only child has grown up to be a serial killer but she would be hella proud that you're fighting for ours and your beliefs." Uncle chuckles whole heartedly. I smile as he ruffles my hair and I paw his hands out of my hair,
"Just promise me you will live to see the day that I murder him in the most beautiful way that will be sure to scar the minds of the inhabitants of the richer areas." I smirk which he returns,
"sure kid." I walk to the front door and lace up my combat boots, my left hand hovers over the rusty doorknob whilst my right hand clutches the handles of the bag tightly,
"I have to go now; is there anything you need to say before I leave." I smile slightly as my dark bangs cover my eyes,
"Just a couple. First thing though, take these... rice, salt, sugar and a wad of cash. You the money wisely and please don't make rice balls for idiots. Make 'em for the people that are special in your life." Uncle walks up to me and places the items in my torn bag, he holds out a clenched fist which I fist bump then look into his tearing dark eyes, "Just remember that evil isn't born. It's made." I turn to the door and smile,
"Be it the kingdom or the world, we would make anyone our enemy-" I start,
"That's what it means to be family." Uncle finishes, I open the door and stop in the door way,
"I probably won't be seeing you for a while, so stay safe and continue doing what you love and tell mum that I said thank you and that I love her." With hat being my final statement I walk in the direction of my new home with Wolf walking besides me, a gentle smile dances across my face as I treasure the silence, "Too bad I didn't see Hunter or anyone worth recruiting to join the pack, huh boy." Wolf barks in agreement. As we walk closer and closer to the fence a lady screaming fills the air, the tow of us walk closer and closer to an alleyway that filled with screaming. I look into it and I see that an ugly thug is trying to rape a currently half naked woman. I sigh, I can't just let this slide can I? I look at wolf who nods and sits down by the corner. I set the bad close to Wold and walk up to the duo,
"OI!" I shout gaining both of the pair's attention, the man growls and spits by my feet. I glare at the bubbly saliva, the shift my glare to the rapist, "Get lost, if you fail to acknowledge my warning this alley is going to be painted with your blood. So it's your choice. Do or die." I growl, the man's eyes widen and he stumbles out of the alleyway into the opposite direction we're heading. I look at the cowering women who's clad with torn items of clothing. I walk in the direction on wolf and pick up my bag, wolf gets up. Not bothering to look behind at the ungrateful teen I speak up, "Are you not going to come?" I ask, I can imagine her bright eyes widening and her bruised form stumbling to me because she's barefoot and the ground is sure to cut into her feet. As we make our way closer to the gate my mum's soft voice rings through my ears 'Just remember even if I can't see you, no matter how far away you go... I will always be watching over you from in here.' I clutch my heart and begin to climb the fence whilst Wolf crawls under. Wolf and I watch the girl stand on the other side of the fence emotionlessly,
"Why?" I raise an eyebrow as she speaks for the first time to me, "Why are you being so nice to me?!" she shouts as tears stream from her face,
"simply because I wanted to. Is there something wrong with that?" I state bluntly, her eyes widen...
"Where are you taking me?" she asks attempting to sound hard,
"My house..." I drawl out, Wolf bites my shin and barks at me... oh I just realised how perverted I sounded, "Sorry I didn't mean to sound like a perv but yeah you don't seem to have a home and I can take you in but I guess you'll have to be sharing a couch with two other guys." I shrug,
"BRROOOOKKKKK!!" a loud obnoxious voice of a male dashes up to the fence and places a hand on 'Brook's' shoulder,
"Hunter?" her voice enquires as if to ask why Hunter's here,
"You forgot your guns." He hands her a pair of desert eagles... Hunter... that name sounds familiar.
"Oi!" I say to get the guy with white hair, "How old are ya?", the guy narrows his eyes,
"What's your name?" he growls which Wolf obliges by,
"Wolf." I spit, his eyes widen when he looks into my eyes and my aura of blood lust thickens and spreads through the contaminated air of this part of town,
"What's the best thing about pain?" he asks me; I smirk so it is him.
"Pain is your friend, It's your ally. Pin tells you when you have been wounded but the best thing about pain is that... the best thing about pain tells you that you are not dead yet." My smirk widens,
"Wolf let us come with you and join your pack. Reasons why? Well we both owe you, we wanna aid in the assassination of Autumn, you are my best friend and we both excel with guns and explosives." I turn and walk in the direction of home,
"come on then." They catch up and I hand them the last two bracelets, the four of us walk home. "now let me make things clear, there are two others of the pack they are not necessarily strong but they are loyal. Not only that but Hunter under no circumstances are you to address me as my birth name, both of you are to refer to me as wolf. If you show any signs of defiance or truancy against me and you'll pay with your lives." I growl and continue walking in the direction of home,
"Just like a wolf..." I hear Hunter mumble to Brook. I shake my head and rid my brain of my restless thoughts.
