I put down my textbook, look down at my phone and see that my best friend Doug is calling me. I accept the call and bring the phone up to my ear.
"Hey Doug!"
"Yo, Caroline! What's up? Hey get your ass over here, we are meeting up at the courtyard,"
I roll my eyes, "Alright, on my way, asshole,"
"Hey—!" I hang up on him before he can answer me with a grin on my face.
I toss the phone into my bag and leave my dorm room. As I walk through the hallways and out the dormitory front door, I cannot stop myself from smiling wider. The sunlight greets my face as I continue walking to the campus courtyard in the center.
Doug has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. He has always been the type to flirt a lot, not with me though and is highly protective of me. Recently though, we found more friends and our group increased from us to five. The five of us now do everything together and he seems to be taking interest in Amy.
I sure hope he takes interest in me someday.
I stroll down the sidewalk looking down at one my textbooks, almost arriving at the courtyard. I spend all of my free time preparing for the end of the semester as it is getting nearer and the weather is getting colder.
After another minute of walking and reading, I toss my book into my bag and throw it over my shoulder as I approach the courtyard. I scan the area and see my friends playing around on one side of it. Doug looks as though he is holding one of his little engineering projects and is firing something at Arin, water it looks like? Doug is an engineering student here and he often makes the strangest little gadgets with his free time.
Did Doug make another one of those water gun contraptions again? He better has made me one too, dammit!
Amy is standing to the side giggling with Doug as Arin looks like he is taking the little game seriously. Victor is also standing close by, being quiet like he always does. He is too lazy to join in with Doug's shenanigans. He's seriously no fun. It usually does not help matters much when he says rude and strange things to me too.
When I get close enough to them, they turn their heads at me and Doug immediately aims his gun at me and squirts me with water! His beautiful green eyes lock onto mine as his smirk increases on his face. My mouth falls open as I glare back at him playfully, "Ah! You son of a bitch!"
Doug laughs historically at me before pulling another from his large pants pockets and gently tossing it to me, "Here, made you something!"
I catch it and immediately fire it at him. "You take it back, asshole!"
He continues to laugh hysterically while squirting more at me. It feels like a two on one little game as Arin joins in with squirting me, "Of course you would join him, Arin! Is there anything you do not take seriously?"
Arin snickers at me, "Shh, Caroline, you are my victim!" and with that he aims at me again.
I roll my eyes at them both. They can be crazy at times. One is a bit crazier than the other though. I glance over to Amy and she is giggling while watching Doug the entire time. She has out her phone and looks to be snapping pictures, following us around with it pointed at us. She sure does love her images and crafty things. Amy is an art student here. She takes pictures of us every time we hang out like this. I do admit it makes for fun laughs later and it helps keep the memories fresh in our minds.
Then I glance over at Victor, who has been watching me with his dark grey eyes since I have gotten here with a smirk on his lips. He must be coming up with some more of those bad jokes he always says. Even when he makes me laugh sometimes, he still somehow sounds rude at the same time. I just cannot figure him out.
"Geez, you have such terrible aim with that gun, Caroline!" Victor butts in from where he is watching us.
"Like you could do any better, lazy ass," I snap back softly.
"Whatever makes you think that? Maybe not, or maybe I can?" He replies, with his smirk still on his lips.
"Oh my god, Caroline, you are such an ice queen," Arin says loudly as he looks me over with his deep brown eyes. He almost looks as though he is hungrily looking at me. What a creep!
"I love it!" he says slowly and a bit creepily.
"Ugh, oh my god, shut the hell up Arin! You creep!"
"Now, now, Arin, you be careful what you say around my sweet Caroline. If you do not, I might have to come get your ass!" Doug says, in my defense.
He makes my stomach flip a bit. He acts as though he is interested but he never follows up with it. It has to be part of his craziness spilling through, but sometimes I wish it would actually be true.
I let out a slight sigh and shove the gun in my pants pocket. I then turn around and stand by Amy, dropping my bag on the ground by my feet. She smiles at me before turning back to her phone, snapping more pictures of our friends, mostly Doug though. Somewhere deep inside, I feel something but I suppress it. There is no use trying to figure out my emotions, much less know what to do about them. If Doug likes Amy more and wants to keep me as his best friend, then there is nothing I can really do I guess.
Doug and Arin break me from my thoughts as they continue squirting their guns at each other until they are out of water before stopping.
As I watch my friends and share smiles with them, I start to feel somewhat lightheaded and my vision begins to darken, like the brightness of my vision is being toned down. When I close my eyes and rub them then open them again, the school courtyard before me appears run down and deserted. The walls of the buildings are falling apart and the courtyard is littered with debris and other objects.
What the hell happened? What is going on?
The sky is very dark like a large heavy thunderstorm is approaching and the wind is strong, howling and swirling around me. A strong stench is reaching my nose, forcing me to scrunch up my face and suck in my breath as to stop breathing it in.
I cover my mouth and nose with my hands and look around in terror. My eyes widen as I begin to notice bodies lying around. My lips begin to tremble uncontrollably as I feel my entire body tremble as well. I hold my arms tighter, trying to stop it.
A—are they... dead?
Some of them look mangled and others are missing body parts. Then I notice the dark red stains everywhere. Oh my god... is that blood?
When I turn around, I almost scream as I see what looks to be a child spirit standing there, staring straight back at me. It is a bluish white figure standing there with no eyes. There is nothing there but two black voids and I feel as though they are looking into my soul. I feel myself shiver as I grasp my arms with my hands.
"Come... play... with... me...," Is the last thing I hear before the image instantly leaves my vision and I am back in the lively courtyard next to my friends. It looked like I had blinked and the image left but I do not recall blinking at all.
It felt like that lasted for an eternity. My friends are looking back at me with worried looks on their faces.
What the hell was that? I better not say anything. I do not wish to bother anyone with my problems. I must be just seeing things or something.
"Yo, Caroline, you alright?" Doug asks me. I notice he is right in front of me just inches away. His green eyes are concerned as he waits for my response. I feel my stomach flip once again as I realize how close he is to me. Arin, Amy and Victor are also close by, sharing similar looks. I must have held a strange look on my face and this is what has alerted them of the thing that happened to me just now.
"Oh, n—nothing is wrong. I just remembered something strange, that is all. Nothing important,"
Before anyone else can say anything, Victor asks, "Something strange? Are you sure? The look on your face just now looked as though you just saw a ghost or something," He sounds genuinely concerned like the others, which is something I hardly ever see from him. I had no idea he cared like that. I doubt he really does. Why care about me anyway?
I shake my head and avert my gaze from his, "N—no, I am fine. Thanks for caring though. I must be tired or something,"
My friends do not seem to accept my answer but all nod anyway, acting as though they do.
What the hell was that though? It looked like our school, but it looked as though it has been deserted for centuries and the bodies... oh god.
I feel myself hold back a shiver as I recall the horrific images that clouded my mind.
