Chapter 2: The Lifestyle
The night had vanished with the sun finally ascending into the sky, yet onerously struggling to illuminate the city. There are many areas in the City of Blaymont, most being calm with a serene atmosphere. Places which Madison usually admired from a great distance-usually through her window. However, this specific part of town was entirely appalling.
The air was swirling with pollution, making it difficult for a person to inhale oxygen normally. The street noise, initiating from raging cars, building construction, sirens etc, was so blaring that it was probably enough to permanently damage a person's ears. Not to mention, crime occurred all over. With the ominous people illegally selling out drugs and thieves robbing markets; so common that this occurs throughout whole the day.
Needless to say, everything here was frowned upon.
The girls, being forced to clean up the entire building, as though were slaves, all scattered around and scrubbed down anything with visible grime or filth. There was a group of girls for each assigned chore, they normally work in packs to make their job less gruelling and complicated. Basically, bitter teamwork. Few of the girls polished the windows while others washed dishes. Every position had a group of girls cleaning from the ceilings to the floors.
Ms.Villian sat comfortably in a chair, with her legs crossed, watching all the girls perform manual labor. She grinned callously, clearly finding nothing but enjoyment from this manual labor.
She took a slip from her bottle of wine. "Y'all better clean faster! I still can't see my godly features on this floor. And no one is eating breakfast until I do!"
"Breakfast? It's already passed lunch," A girl mumbled. She was washing dishes and aged probably around nine.
"Tch, with Ms.Villian in charge, we won't even eat by dinner," Another girl scoffed in response to the dish girl. She was about eleven years old and mopping the floor.
Ms.Villian finished her wine and threw the glass bottle in the direction of those two girls. Fortunately, the bottle merely hit the wall behind the them, but some of the scattered glass shards flew aimlessly and deeply cut the sides of the girls' faces. To this, they cried.
"Ah, shut up! And make sure to sweep up that mess," Ms.Villian hollered and pointed towards the shards of glass that laid scattered across the ground. The crying girl abandoned their tasks, grabbed some old brooms and obeyed reluctantly.
"Ugh, I f*cking hate this!" Lyla complained as she walked passed the teary eyed girls sweeping.
She was currently holding a large metal bucket of soapy water; struggling massively to keep it from falling. Following behind her were two other girls, fairly around Lyla's age. One was holding dish rags, her name, Vanessa. The other had a mop her and her name was Elizabeth.
"It's a drag, we know, but do you have to point it out every day? This is our life and we can't change it," Venessa replied.
"I've noticed that, dimwit! And yes, I have to point it out everyday! Because I find it annoying that we have to suffer because of someone else's mistakes," Lyla retorts harshly.
Confused, Elizabeth asked,"What do you mean 'someone else's' mistakes?"
"Madison's mistakes!"
"Madison? But she didn't do anything...did she?" Vanessa asks.
"Yes! She always does," Lyla yells again. She opens the door which led to the back porch and placed the bucket down. She grabs one of the rags, dips it into the water and begins to wipe down the windows. As she does this, she finishes her complaint, "She just had to go ahead and make Bitch angry. If she didn't break the rules all the time with her stupidity, we might have gotten more sleep and less manual labor!"
"Breaking rules? I never realized she was like that. She's always so quiet. It's weird." The Elizabeth says as she begins to mop down the porch.
"Of course you didn't. You see Beth, you only really get to know a person once you're force to share a room with them," Lyla replied.
"Can you at least try calling me by my full name?" Elizabeth asked, well more specifically, begged.
"Geez whatever, E-li-Za-Beth."
Vanessa rolled her eyes at them,"Anyways Lyla, sounds like it must really suck for you,"
"Ugh it does. She only thinks about herself and it's so so annoying! Why did she have to be my roommate!? I actually enjoyed having the room to myself but she had to come and ruin my life more than it already is," Lyla, continued to rant, "I wish she'd just drop dead."
"You know, speaking of, where is Madison anyways?" Elizabeth asks shifter her head around searching for Madison's presence.
"This morning Ms.Villian took her away to, well you know."
"Hell?"
"Yeah pretty much," Lyla confirmed, " Knowing her, She's probably still there, But who why do even care? She deserved getting punished down there anyways."
"You sure that's not pushing it a little too harshly?" Elizabeth asked.
"Shut up E-Li-Za-Beth!"

Madison laid motionless on the cold hard floor, staring almost unconsciously at the ceiling. Her eyes scanned the darkness, with every muscle in her body feeling as though she was recently trampled by a train. Ms.Villian beat her senselessly. As always promised when they first enter the room, when anyone enters the room. Regardless, she figured after laying there mindlessly for so long, now would be a good time get up. With that thought in mind, she slowly attempted to lift herself from off the ground. She exited the room, staggering up the countless stairs to the second floor of the building.
Light shined through the windows as she approaches the second floor, landing softly upon her cold lifeless skin. It was warm, refreshing. Much better compared to the cold hell she just escaped from. Slowly the light began to disappear as a figure blocked her view, sending shadows to fall upon her. It was Ms.Villian. Again.
"Well it's about time you've decided to quit laying around and come join us," Ms.Villian insulted with scowl expression displayed on her face.
"Well...technically...I didn't have a choice... since well..."Madison corrected.
"Are you talking back to me?"Ms.Villian asked, glaring at the poor girl, making her feel entirely smaller than she already did.
"Um...no I mean...um...I'm sorry for not coming up early...it must have been a burden to...worry...about me."
Ms.Villian gave Madison an expression, one basically showing that she 'approves' her apology. She then grabbed a nearby broom-it was upside down-and shoved it violently into Madison's hands. "Tch, good. Now go make yourself useful."
Madison nodded as she flipped the broom to its appropriate side. She began to sweep as Ms.Villian ordered. Dust kicked up everywhere, clouding the area, making Madison cough. She'll never get used to the dust.
Half an hour had passed and although that may not appear to be a long amount of time, when being under Ms.Villian's authority, it felt like decades. Fortunately, the phone in Ms.Villian's office had begun to ring, which forced her to remove herself from the girls presents.
There were a few nosy girls, who immediately abandoned there tasks merely to eavesdrop on Ms.Villian's conversation. And surprisingly, as she spoke to the person on the other line, she looked genuinely happy. Whoever was speaking with her must have somehow seriously amused that sadist witch, because directly after she hung the the phone up, she dashed into her room. Not long has passed before Ms.Villian walked out with an entirely different...rather exposing outfit.
"I am leaving, but this floor and every floor in this build better be spotless before I get back.-- whenever that is," Ms. Villian announced before opening the door to exit the second floor. However after she spoke, somehow her sadistic, callous mood change to that of something resembling sixteen-year-old peppy yet immoral teenager. She left out the building saying,"Mama's found her knight and is about to make sure he draws his sword."
This sentence alone contains many connotations, but only the eldest girls understood what Ms.Villian was implying.
After the room went deadly silent, as though one could easily hear a pin drop. However that didn't appear to last long, especially after one girl yelled at the top of her lungs," The b*tch is gone!"
Everyone left from doing their chores and indulged in other activities that Ms.Villian would normally murder them for. Example being: having some actual fun.
As everyone enjoyed their matron's absences, Madison used this as an opportunity. She departed to her room, on the third floor of the building and changed into her only other outfit. It was exactly the same the one she currently wore- a red plaid dress that fell barely below her knees, with sleeves longer than her arms. Nothing special. However the main difference was, it was actually clean- almost brand new. Madison always made certain of this.
She grabbed a few more needed necessities, then followed the stairs down to the second floor. Speed walking to the back porch-unknowingly passing Lyla -an she began to climb down the rusted metal ladder built into the building. A metal clanging sound emitted from each step she took downwards.
As she reached closer towards the ground, filthy water splashed all over her head. Drenching her only clean dress and forcing her hair to cling to her face as it was soaked. She looked up a noticed a metal bucket flipped over above. As well as the antagonizing Lyla looking down at her with head resting in her elbow.
"Sorry, did I get you?" she asked, innocently but giggled softly under her breath. Actually that wasn't as much as a question as it was a joke to her.
"Lyla, That wasn't...very nice," Madison addressed softly, completely aware that she her apology was fake. She used one of her hands to remove the soaked hair slightly covering her eyes. Only to after take her glasses off and try to wipe away the droplets of water.
"I apologized, didn't I? Besides it's not like it's my fault anyways. The bucket was heavy so I dropped it."
"Coming from you, Lyla...I doubt that."
"Doubt what you want, but you decided to leave out this direction instead of the front door like a normal person. You were bound to get drenched regardless,"Lyla retorted.
"Well...the alley is a better shortcut to where I'm going...plus I always go this direction...You know that..."
"Speaking of," Lyla began, her voice sounded as though she was planning a scheme," I don't think it's fair that Ms.Villian isn't aware that you leave once every week. I thought you would expose yourself because you're so clumsy and mess everything up. But since somehow you didn't, I believe it's about time that someone mentions this to Ms.Villian."
"N...no you can't. That's not fair!"
"And why not? I don't even like you!"
"Because you and I made a deal..."
"So? No one ever said I couldn't break it, did they?"
"Just...please don't...you already torment me daily...I don't know why...but aren't you satisfied enough....If Ms.Villian does eventually find out the whole story...then so be it...but please don't cause it to happen soon,"Madison begged through her faulty voice.
Lyla looked down at her from the porch and rolled her eyes. "ugh. Fine. But I require a bargain. Get me something editable. And I mean actually editable! I hate the cold mushrooms and cabbage we get everyday."
"B...but how am I--"
"You could always sell that expensive bracelet of yours. Pretty sure with the money that carries, you could buy me more than just a meal."
"What, No! I could never! It's too valuable..."
"Ugh, Fine. Well go figure something out, I mean you always manage to sneak out unnoticed anyways! And...make it quick!"
Madison sighed, nodding she did so.
With that, their conversation concluded. Lyla returned to the inside of the building and Madison ran down the cold dark alleyway in direction of the next main street ahead. As she ran, Madison attempted to wring out the dirty water that soaked her hair. Hopefully no one will address it how soaked she was. Or maybe if she is fortunate enough, she'll dry off before she gets there.
Eventually, she left the poverty ridden area of Blaymond, and entered the vicinity of wealth, relaxation, and serenity. The part of the city where she had joyful and heart-breaking memories about from when she previously lived here with her mother and father.
Before everything change.
