I'm fine
"Carol." Arvilla couldn't believe her friend had just called her out like that.
"Uh, Arvilla. Correct?" The gentleman says.
Arvilla looks at the doctor and clenches her jaw. "Yes."
"I can't force you, no one can, but it would be best if we maybe ran some blood work."
"Doctor, I'm fine. Really. My husband just passed away so of course I've been very emotional and.. I haven't been eating as well as I probably should. Plus, I came from Borneo and so the change in food just has my stomach upset. That is all."
"No, please don't listen to her!" Carol says.
"Don't listen to me?"
"No! Arvilla, you and Joe have been all over the world! Do you ever get sick like this?"
Arvilla sighs and rolls her eyes.
"Well?"
"Not EVERY time. But nothing's wrong!"
"Arvilla.. Please. Just do this for me. For everyone that loves you. We just want to make sure you're okay."
Arvilla looks at Carol and purses her lips.
"Fine."
"Thank you!"
"Whatever. Will this take long? We have somewhere to be."
"We'll work as quickly as we can, ma'am." The young doctor says with a smile.
"Thank you."
Carol smiles and rubs Arvilla's back.
Arvilla gives her friend a look as she groans.
"You."
**
Arvilla sat in a chair with Joe's urn in her lap. The skin on her arm exposed.
"I hate needles." She says.
"You'll be fine."
Arvilla looks at her arm as they poke her.
"Ugh!" She makes a face and faces the other way.
"All done!"
"See? Was that hard?" Carol smiles.
"Carol, leave me alone."
Carol smiles to the technician and nods her head.
"She's a character! When will we have the results?"
"In about one to two hours."
"What? We don't have that time!"
"Arvilla, calm down. Could you maybe call her with the results?"
"Of course!"
"They can't do that, I threw my cell phone out of the car this morning!"
"Oh that's right.. Well how about I put my number down? Would that be okay?"
"That's fine." Arvilla says.
"Okay, we can do that! It'll all work out." Carol says with a smile.
**
"There you are! What took so long?" Margene asks as her two friends finally make their way out of the hospital.
"I convinced Arvilla to see a doctor."
"You did? What'd they say?"
"They took some blood, they'll call with the results soon."
"Oh.. Well I'm sure everything's fine!" Margene says with a smile.
"Let's just get back on the road." Arvilla walks to the car.
For the next three hours Arvilla was secretly panicking. It's been three hours, why hadn't they called? What if something was horribly wrong? Her mind was racing even more than normal.
Suddenly Carol's phone rang.
Arvilla gasped and turned to her.
She then stopped the car as Carol answered it.
"Hello? Yes, just one second."
"It's the hospital."
Arvilla sighed and took the phone. She placed her hand on her stomach and said Hello.
"Yes? This is Mrs. Holden..
Okay? Uh-huh.. What? No. No- No, that can't be. That isn't possible."
Both Margene and Carol look to each other in fear for their best friend.
"Yeah.. Okay. Thank you.."
Arvilla then hung up and stared straight ahead.
"Arvilla?"
"What did they say?" Margene asks.
....
"Arvilla, tell us what they said!" Carol says. She was so worried.
"I-I.. I can't say it.."
"Honey, you know you can tell us anything! We're here for you!"
Arvilla let out a sob.
"No. No, this isn't fair. I- I can't be!" She nods as tears roll down her cheeks.
"Arvilla, Tell Us!" Carol raised her voice.
Arvilla turns to her friends in tears.
"He said I'm pregnant."
"Woah." Carol's eyes went wide.
"Shit!" Margene was shocked.
Just then Emmett walked up to see what was wrong.
"Hey ladies. Everything okay?"
"Somebodies knocked up." Margene says.
"Well we haven't even done anything, so I know it isn't mine!"
Carol rubs Arvilla's shoulders and says, "Arvilla's pregnant."
"Woah! Congratulations." Emmett smiles.
"Thank you.. I just can't believe it. It can't be real. It can't be!"
"Those test are usually pretty accurate." Carol says.
"I just didn't think this would be something I'd be dealt with."
"Life is full of surprises."
"Heh! Don't I know it."
"But this is great! You get to meet this tiny person that is apart of both You, and Joe!"
Hearing that made a sob escape Arvilla.
"Nice going." Margene gives Carol a look.
"I'm sorry!"
"I can't do this! I can't!"
"Honey, yes you can!" Margene says, her heart hurting for her friend.
"This sucks!"
"Arvilla!" Carol says.
"No, I mean.." She sighs and wipes her cheeks. "I just mean.. this timing. The fact that I don't have Joe here with me. That sucks!"
"I know.. But we're here for you!"
"We are, sister!" Margene smiles and grabs her hand.
"Heh.. I know you are." Arvilla sniffles. "Thanks."
"Of course!"
Arvilla sighs and says, "Let's get going. We're a few minutes away from where I wanted to take him.." She looks to the side and places her hand on Joe's urn.
"Okay.." Carol kisses her cheek and buckles up.
"Oh gosh.." Arvilla places her free hand on her stomach, closes her eyes, and takes a deep breath.
"Alright. Let's go."
