A Dance

Arvilla sat back in her chair waiting for Robert to bring her some water.

As Robert approached her he saw Arvilla softly stroking her baby bump with her shoes off, and her feet up on his chair.  Robert couldn't help but smile.

"Here's your water, ma'am."

"Thank you so much!  Here, let me move my feet off your chair." Arvilla says with a struggle. She was having a hard time getting out of that position.

"No, don't worry about it!" Robert picks up her feet, sits down, then places them on his lap.

"Foot massage?"

Arvilla smiles and lays her head back.
"Well thank you!  I would love one, sir!"

Robert smiles and begins massaging her feet.
"How are you feeling?"

"Like I could drop one at any moment."

"Really?"

"Yeah. I feel a lot of pressure down there.  Heidi is a little more eager to come out than her little brother is." Arvilla chuckled with exhaustion. "Joe is balled up right here.  He loves to ball up!" She says gently pressing into the top of her stomach.

"Aw.  That must hurt!  I'm so sorry." Robert places his hand on her bump.

"It's okay.  It's pretty painful, but I'm okay."

"Wow." Robert just stares at her.

"What?" Arvilla laughs.

"You're just incredible, that's all."

"Oh gosh, I am not!"

"Are you serious? You are! Look at you sitting there making twins as we speak!"

Arvilla laughs.

"I'm so amazed at what your body is doing."

"Wow.. well thank you." She smiles.

"You're welcome." Robert chuckles.

There was then a silence.

"You know.. you still owe me a dance. You danced with the boys, with Bo.  With Margene and Carol!
.. But not me.  Maybe next time?" He smiles softly.

Arvilla smiles and attempts standing.

"No, stay sitting!  It's okay, I was just messing with you!"

"Help me up!" Arvilla raises her voice.

Robert chuckles and stands to help her.

"Thanks!" Arvilla smiles.

"You're welcome!"

"Now sit down." She tells him.  Her voice making it clear she's out of breath.  Just standing took a lot out of her.

"Okay." He laughs and sits back down.

Arvilla then looks down and asks, "Would you like to dance?"

"Oh Arvilla, what a surprise! Yes, I'd love to!  Thanks!"

Arvilla laughs as Robert takes her arm.
George Michael played.

"Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don't patronize
Don't patronize me"

Robert held Arvilla in his arms.  Her belly was pressed against him.  He could feel the twins kicking from within.

Robert looked down and Arvilla gave him a beautiful smile.  All he wanted to do was grab her and kiss her right there in front of everyone.
He wanted to pick her up and take her home.
Robert wanted to make love to Arvilla.

For now he'll settle for a dance.

"'Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't"

"Do you feel them?" Arvilla giggled softly.

"I do!  You're gonna have your hands full, aren't you?"

"Oh my gosh, yes!"

"If anyone can do it, it's you, Arvilla."

Arvilla smiles. "Thank you, Bobby."

The two look into each other's eyes for a moment without speaking a word.

Robert's heart was pounding, but he felt this was right.

He leaned in and softly pressed his lips onto hers.

At first Arvilla was shocked, but soon she let go and kissed him passionately.

Suddenly Arvilla began to cry.
She pulled away and looked down.

"I'm sorry!  I shouldn't have done that but—"

"No!  No, don't be sorry.  I just.. it's too soon.  I'm sorry."

"I understand.  I just couldn't help it.  You're so beautiful and sweet.. it kills me, Arvilla."

Arvilla takes a deep breath. "I just can't do that to Joe.. I need to just focus on our babies right now."

"I understand.  Again, I apologize."

"It's okay!  Please don't apologize for expressing your feelings." Just then Arvilla got the most painful contraction she's ever had.

"Oh!" She cried out, grabbing ahold of Robert.

Robert held her and gently rubbed her back.
"Breathe.. breathe.  You're okay.
  You're so strong."

"Robert." Arvilla breathes heavily. "I think they're coming.  I've been having pains all day.  I think this might be it."

Robert looked down to Arvilla.  He felt terrible that she was in so much pain.  He wished there were something he could do for her.
