Chapter 39: Brotherly Talk
Diedrek
Darius looks at me in bewilderment. His eyes are huge, and his hands have made their way into his hair. Disheveling the strands. Making them stand up in all different directions. He stands from the chair and begins pacing.
I know he needs a moment to collect his thoughts. To get his bearings. This is a lot to take in for the both of us, but especially him. He just found out he has a younger half-sister.
I sit back on the couch and wait for him to speak. I watch him make his way to one side and back to the other in front of the fire, all the while grumbling under his breath. When he stops pacing, he lowers his arms and turns to look at me.
"She's, my sister?" I don't say anything, only give him a nod.
"You're certain?" He asks.
"Yes, the witches are never wrong. You know this." I answer him.
"I just..." Darius starts, but I cut him off.
"I know this is a lot to take in. A lot of information to handle, hell I just found out less than an hour ago, and my head is still reeling from it." I say, letting him know he isn't alone with how he's feeling.
"Well, if you think about it, all the signs were there." he says in a deep voice.
I study him a moment before asking, "What do you mean?"
He looks at me with a smile in his eyes. "I have felt nothing but protective instincts for her since she got here. When she's around I get this feeling of familiarity, you know what I mean?" He shrugs trying to make it seem like this is no big deal.
"Yes, it's how you feel when you are around others from your blood line. I feel it whenever I am around Satine." I explain how it affects me too.
"Of course, how I feel when around Satine isn't as powerful as how you feel when you are around Kyla." I tell him truthfully.
He raises his eyebrows in question, "What do you mean?"
I laugh at him, "Please, when I told you I said I would agree to my father's terms I thought you were going to knock my head off."
He laughs while walking over to the chair. Once he sits, he holds his stomach from laughing so hard. "Yeah, to be honest I wanted to." He tells me truthfully.
"That's why I had to walk out and be away from you for a while." His eyes turn solemn.
We look at each other, each one of us showing understanding. "That was the first and only time I can ever remember feeling that way. The fact it was towards you, was confusing."
"Not anymore though." I state matter-of-factly.
"You got that right. Now I understand it entirely. She's my sister, mine to protect." He folds his body down, placing his elbows on his knees, looking at me.
I sit up myself knowing he's about to say something serious to me. The look in his eyes tells me so. I better listen to what he has to say.
"Speaking of which now that I know who she is to me and why I feel this way. As her older brother I must tell you." He pauses for a moment and just stares at me.
"I'm listening. You have my full attention, so please continue." I tell him when I cannot stand the silence much longer.
"I'm not allowing you to go through with that agreement. It's not right, and I will not stand by and allow you to treat my sister in that way." I would laugh at him if he didn't have such a fierce look in his eyes.
"I already decided against that before I came back here. I couldn't imagine doing anything like that to her." He studies my face for a minute.
"I'm glad to hear that." He speaks.
"Besides man, I cannot imagine touching another woman ever again. I only have eyes, and a major boner for my Kyla." I know it's a dick move but I had to say it to fuck with him. Just a little bit.
"Oh man," He whines causing me to laugh.
"Can we not talk about your boner when it comes to Kyla now, please." He sits back holding his hand over his eyes.
I'm laughing so hard it takes me a moment to calm down. "Sorry brother, I had to say it." I shrug my shoulders and wipe the lone tear that came from the corner of my eye.
He grunts at me in answer, not saying much more for a while. We sit like that together, him on the chair, hand over his eyes. Me, still laid back on my couch. Soaking in the current information and thinking about the things we have all learned these last few days.
"Do you think my father did something horrible to Kyla's mother?" I know its entirely possible, but I just need to ask it none-the-less.
"I'm not sure, but I would think so. Because who your father is." He removes his hand and looks at me.
"Yeah," he says sadly.
"I mean our fathers aren't too different. That's why they are best friends. Always have been." We both nod our heads with that sad thought.
We have always known who our fathers are, and of what they were capable of. The two of us always felt sorry for our mothers, knowing what they had to endure. What they went through because two evil monsters got an obsession with them, and who they were.
With the power any child they produced with their blood lines. It's the whole reason our mothers were chosen. Now there is a third person to mourn for in some way. Kyla's mother, who I can only guess was trying to run off to find some freedom from an overprotective brother.
Only to be found by a monster that her brother was trying to protect her from to begin with. The sad thing is I cannot be entirely too sad because Kyla came from that coupling. We look to one another knowing each of us are thinking the same thing.
