Chapter 33: Worried
Kyla
Satine freezes in my arms. "Oh no." She whispers against my shoulder.
"What's wrong?" I pull away from her to look at her face. Her eyes hold such sadness within, and her lips are shaking. "Satine, what is going on?" I try again.
"I'm not sure really, I cannot hear. Just something bad has happened." She answers me.
"What? What happened? Is Diedrek all right?" I'm off the bed and making my way to the door before she can answer me.
One minute she's on the bed, the next she's standing in front of the door before I can reach for the dresser to move it. "You cannot go out there. We must stay hidden in here until Darius or Diedrek himself comes to let us out." She says adamantly.
"Well, you're freaking me out here. I need to know he's okay. That nothing bad has happened to him. If his younger brother is as true of a monster as you say, then we need to help him."
"It's not that," she pauses. Her eyes starting to go buggy. Her irises are moving fast, as though she's reading a book. "It's just a bad feeling. Something is off but I don't know what. That's all." She reassures me.
Taking a deep breath, I let it out and make my way back to the bed. Sitting down, I wait for her to join me. When she does her eyes don't leave the door. We sit like that, in the quiet space for a while, until we finally hear footsteps reaching the door.
Within seconds the dresser is moved and the lock clicks. The door bursts open a second later, and there in the threshold stands Diedrek. Not realizing my own actions, I make my way off the bed and into his arms, throwing mine around his neck at an abnormal speed.
Breathing him in, my heart rate begins to settle, and my body becomes calm. He hasn't wrapped his arms around me in return, nor are his shoulders loosening from their taunt stance. I move away to look at his face.
There is so much sadness in his eyes. He can't even bring himself to look at me. He's looking around the room. He looks at his cousin, pretty much at anything else so he doesn't have to make eye contact with me. "Leave us please Satine." He whispers.
She makes her way around us and down the hall. "Don't go far, stay in one of my spare rooms for now." He says to her back as she walks away.
He grabs my hand and walks me to his bed. We sit down with our fingers interlaced with one another. He hasn't taken his stare away from our adjoining hands.
"What happened?" I ask. I need to know with every fiber of my being.
He takes a deep breath, opens his mouth to tell me, but we are interrupted by a throat clearing. His head shoots towards the door. There, in the threshold of the bedroom and door stands Darius. He looks completely pissed off. His stance looks as though he's preparing for a fight.
He has his legs spread apart, and his shoulders are straight up with tension. He has his arms crossed over his chest. "The witches need to speak with you. They have some news." He tells him, and without waiting for Diedrek's response he walks off.
We can hear the stomping of his boots down the hall. Hear a door opening and mumbling. He is talking with Satine about a matter. After a few minutes, we hear her shout "You've got to be fucking kidding me!" Followed by more stomping and a door slamming shut.
I can hear fast steps making their way back down the hall. Satine stands there in the threshold of the door. Her hands are on her hips, and she has a death glare towards her cousin. She looks as though she wants to rip his head clear off his shoulders.
"You aren't really considering what he tells me you are? Please tell me he's lying?" She asks with clear disgust in her tone. His shoulders sag for a brief second, before he stands at his full height, and walks her way.
"We will discuss this later. I have a meeting." He hits her shoulder briefly as he walks by her. "Stay with her, and keep your mouth shut." I hear him say as he walks down the hallway.
"Fuck you! You can't tell me what to do." She hollers at his retreating back. Before I know what's happening, he is beside her crowding her against the far wall of the hallway. Feeling like I need to do something I make my way to them and place my hand on his shoulder. "Hey, leave her alone. She's had a lot of emotions today. None of them are good."
He brushes my hand off, and steps back away from his cousin. He points at her, "I mean it, Satine, I need to talk with her about it first."
Her chin rises as she shoots daggers at him with her eyes. "Fine but I'm telling you right now you better not." She leaves it at that and walks off to the other bedroom slamming the door behind her.
"What was that about?" My fear is rising increasingly with every word that is spoken between them.
"Nothing," He simply brushes off my question. "We will discuss it after my meeting with the witches." He gives me a smile. Not one of his genuine ones though. No, this one holds heavy and incredible sadness.
He walks up to me, places his forehead on mine and closes his eyes. When they open, he brings his lips to mine for a quick kiss on the lips. He wraps his arms around my middle and brings me close to his body. In a tight embrace. He holds me for a few minutes just breathing in the scent of my hair.
His body shudders and I feel a tear leak onto my shoulder. Placing my hands in his hair I hold his head in my hands. Ever so slowly, as he seems like he's a wounded animal now, I bring his face up to mine.
"What is it?" I pause to really look at him, "I know something is wrong. Please tell me." I beg.
I don't like to see him in this state of mind. He shakes his head and wipes the lone tear from his cheek. "We will talk when I get back, I promise sweetheart. Just know I will do anything in my power to protect you from the true monsters of this world." He places his hand along my cheek, rubbing my skin with his thumb.
Placing my hand on his to stop his movements I tell him honestly, "I know you will. As I will protect you with everything I am as well." I smile at him. Hoping to ease whatever it is that's bothering him.
He smiles and kisses the palm of my hand. Then he brings his lips to mine and kisses me once more, "Why don't you take a nap. I'll have Darius here watching over the two of you again, and when I return, we will talk more."
Giving him a nod, I agree and make my way to the bed in the room. I look at him and give him one more smile as I climb under the covers. He blows me a kiss, shoots a wink my way and tells me "Sleep well my Angel." I hear him close the door soon after.
I relax into the pillows and let all my worries go. I agree with him. I need to sleep for a while. So, I can be well rested for our talk later. Judging by everyone's reactions it's not anything good. I have a feeling it won't be something I enjoy hearing about.
