Chapter 23: Trying to Understand

Kyla

Diedrek has been gone for a couple of hours now. I find myself sitting down on the couch, then standing abruptly and pacing the floor. I have done this repeatedly. Darius pops his eyes open each time I stand from the couch and asks if I'm all right.

Honestly, I don't know how to answer his question. Am I alright? I don't think so, I have never felt this anxious before in all my life. The longer Diedrek is gone the worse it seems to get.

Laughter erupts from Darius's mouth. When I glare his way, he laughs harder. With one hand holding his stomach he says, "I know exactly what your problem is."

I stop my pacing, place my hands along my hips. "Care to share what is so funny." I swear if I could I'd spit in his face.

"Nothing little human, just that here you are freaking out because you miss Diedrek, and you don't know how to manage that." He wipes a tear from his eye.

"I do not miss him. That is absurd." I holler back at him, my words dripping with indignation. I begin pacing again, all while watching him out of the corner of my eye.

"Yes, you do," He sits up and places his arms on his knees. "It's part of being each other's blood mates. You cannot help but hate to be apart. It's one of the quirks that come with the whole thing I'm afraid." He smiles at me.

Quickly I make my way to the corner of the coffee table. Sitting down, I get close to him and whisper "Can you tell me anything else about what it means to be a mate. Because I know nothing."

He looks at me in silence for a moment, his eyebrows scrunched up. "Why are you whispering?" He whispers aloud in response.

"I...I don't know really. It just seems like it's an important matter so I figured in case anyone could hear outside these doors, that I would whisper the question."

"You don't need to whisper their little human. It's true us vampires have excellent hearing, even better than the average dog, but Diedrek has this place soundproof. So even the vampires outside these walls cannot hear what's going on or being said in here."

Interesting information, I'll have to keep that in mind for later. "Okay, well is there?"

He stands up and makes his way to the bar in the corner. "Is there what?" He asks while pouring himself a drink.

Rolling my eyes, I ask once more "Is there anything you can tell me about being someone's mate?" My voice rises in irritation with each word that expels from my mouth.

He gives a chuckle, downs the entire drink in one large gulp, and slams the cup down on the tabletop. "I really shouldn't tell you much else. It's not my place."

"Oh, come on, just tell me something about it. I'm in the dark here." He turns around and looks my body up and down. As though he's looking for something, but I have no idea what it could be. He slides the cup over, and half sits on the table. Stretching out his legs, he crosses his arms, and continues staring.

After a few minutes, he nods his head. He must have concluded about something. "All right, sit down and we'll talk."

"I'm already sitting." I hold my arms out in the air dramatically.

"I'm talking on the couch. You'll need to be comfortable for this conversation."

Standing I make my way over to the couch. I sit down, lift my legs up, and grab a pillow. Holding it in my arms for comfort. "I'm ready."

"First off, a mating bond is something that happens between two vampires. Meaning you must have some vampire blood in your line somewhere."

"I know that already, at least that is what Diedrek, and you believe." I pick at the corner of the pillow while I talk. Nervous habit of mine that comes out in these types of situations.

"You think we are wrong?" He turns his head to the side and studies me.

"I think there could be something else. Some other way that we could be each other's mates." My eyes lift to him.

"Well sorry to tell you this little human, but that's not the case, but we will get back to that later." He stands at his full height and cracks his neck from side to side.

Walking back over to the chair he sits down, places his feet up, with his arms under his head. "You see at a certain time, vampires are born or made for a reason. It's fate or destiny. Whatever you want to call it. Each vampire is alive at the same time to find one another. It's like a calling." He looks over at me, as though trying to gouge my reaction so far to the information. I simply nod my head waiting for him to continue.

"When they find one another, it's almost instantaneous. The feeling of that is yours forever. That it's the vampire you are supposed to be with. They become your everything."

"Is there any instance where one or both reject the bond?" I interrupt him with my question.

"In history, there have been known to be one or two that have but believe me you don't want to know what happened to them." I can see in his eyes the horror of the details.

Taking his word for it, I sit quietly and wait for him to continue once more. "Once you are around each other, you must be with one another most of the time. Otherwise, both of you can get antsy, depressed, and moody. I'm talking, your moods can go from fine to explosive within seconds."

"So, you're saying that's why I am antsy right now?" I tilt my head to the side as I look at him, with an eyebrow raised.

"Ooh, now she's getting it." He points his finger at me and winks. "Okay, anything else?"

Well..."

"No," we both turn our heads so fast at the new voice in the room. "He has nothing else to tell you about our mating bond. I will be the one to tell you the rest." Diedrek is standing by the door, his shoulders are tense, and his hands are now fists at his sides.

"Yeah, he has a point," Darius says while he stands up from the chair and stretches out his arms. "I wouldn't explain it very well anyway. I haven't found mine yet." He smiles at me and walks towards the door.

I must give it to him; he has guts because the way Diedrek looks at this moment is frightening. However, it doesn't seem to faze Darius in the least. He walks right over to him, says something I cannot make out, and walks around him to the door.

"Goodnight little human. Sweet dreams." He waves to me, as he opens the door and leaves.

Now here I am with what looks to be a pissed off vampire. "I just had some questions. I find myself confused about all this." I look down afraid of what he might think.

Within an instant his hand is below my chin bringing my face up so I can look into his eyes. I didn't even hear him arrive at my side- he moved so fast. "Well, I will be glad to answer anything you want to know." He smiles and kisses my lips. Everything goes cloudy and I get lost in our kiss, as our lips move together.
