Chapter 46: Failed

Kyla

I make it over the hill, deeper into the forest just in time to watch as the battle begins. Vampire's fighting vampires in every place I seem to look. Unfortunately, I don't see the ones I came here in search of. Before I can make a decision on what to do, I hear the distinct sound of swords being unsheathed.

Looking over to my left I see my cousin standing there, both swords in each hand. He swings them around in a circle, before taking up his fighting stance. I hear a surprised intake of breath, causing my eyes to look at Isabella and Lilly. Following their line of sight, I'm stunned for a moment as I watch Constance charge for my mother.

The book falls from my mother's arms. I watch as Aurora follows it, both her arms held out, as panic overtakes her features. Constance kicks her in the stomach, causing her to bend at the waist. Forgetting all about the book as she cries out in pain.

With one hand she pulls Aurora's hair and punches her in the throat. Causing her body to go flying into the air, landing a few feet away. I watch in wonder as Constance's shoulders lift and fall with the excursion of her movements. Slowly, she prowls toward my mother's lifeless body laying on the ground.

Lifting her up by the throat alone, she headbutts her so profusely we could hear the crack of her nose breaking up here. Aurora gives off a blood curdling scream, as Constance wraps her arms around her throat and sticks her pocketknife into her chest.

I can see Lilly's hand lift to her mouth and cover it, as Isabella wraps her arm around her shoulders. She buries her younger sisters head into her chest, not wanting her to witness this. I watch profoundly as everything plays out. Right to where she slices my mother's head from her body, and it rolls along the ground. Landing at Diedrek's feet.

He catches it with one foot, as he releases it, looking from my mother's head to his father, he kneels down so he's closer to his father. Saying something sadistic to the monster that has been on his knees since we arrived. I watch as Darius hands him a torch. With one last smirk, he stands and places the head on fire. Burning the shell of a woman who used to be my mother, right in front of her own puppet masters eyes.

I wish I could say I feel something like horror or sadness at my mother's death. All that comes into my heart is gratitude. He has eliminated one monster from this world, making it just a little safer for us to reside in. Lilly pulls away from her sister, wiping her tears, and looking back at me.

The poor girl has seen so much devastation in her young life. Like all of us have. I look at each one of my family members that stand beside me because that's what they are. My family, just as some of those vampire's that are fighting down there are.

With that thought I know what needs to be done. Lifting my head proudly, I look each one in the eye. For good measure, I hear my cousin say, "I hate these evil things." Only this time, unlike how this all began, changing our lives forever. Isabella is standing here with us ready to kick some ass just like the rest of us.

She proves this when she raises her hands in the air, holding her own swords. "Let's join in on the fun." She takes off down the hill, into the darkened forest. The three of us hot on her heels. It doesn't take me long; I use my vampire speed to get there before any of them.

Making sure I take on any vampire that comes at me. Everything is happening all at once. Remembering one spell, that can protect me as I slow everyone's movements down, so I can see what's happening. I close my eyes and say, "Let it be."

When I open my eyes back again, everything is quiet, people fighting in slow motion. I see Lucas, Lilly and Isabella are holding their own. As each slices vampires heading their way with swords, and Lilly putting a wooden dagger in each vampires heart that falls. I turn around in a circle, finding Tristan fighting Darius. I almost want to run to where they stand so I can help him, but Constance joins him at his side moments later.

Knowing they are doing fine; I look for the most important vampire in my eyes. I find him, rolling on the ground with his father, the cruel bastard spilling blood every which direction. Diedrek's face and body are covered in red, as he lifts his father's head from him, looking like he's trying to rip it clear off.

"Diedrek!" I holler without thinking of breaking the spell. Rowland has appeared out of nowhere and has a wooden sword lifted above his head, ready to slam it down into Diedrek's heart. Without another thought, I take off running, knowing I need to make it there before something bad happens.

I don't know if the God's and Goddesses care about us creatures and monsters at all in this world, but I still say a silent prayer in my head. If Diedrek dies, I will have no reason to live anymore. The last of my thoughts coursing through my mind, has me picking up the speed.

I jump into the air, and land over top of Diedrek, taking the blade in the center of my back. As I scream in agony, Rowland pulls the sword from my body like butter, just in time for Diedrek to lift us clear off the ground and flipping us around. Laying me softly on the ground, all I see is his eyes turn pure red, as his body shakes with anger. So much in fact when he stands back up his entire body turns red and black.

The fighting between everyone stops for a split second, as the feeling of fear swirls upon us all. Diedrek looks down at me one last time, before kneeling down and biting his wrist. Bringing it to my mouth, I swallow his blood without an argument. Too confused and in utter shock to say a word.

Once he feels I've had enough to heal my wound, he gives me a small smile before flying out at his younger brother. Knocking the sword from his hand, he kicks his legs out from under him. As Rowland is falling to the ground, Diedrek jumps on top and begins to punch him over and over.

His strength is so out of this world, the skin is tearing from his brother's face. Everyone around us begins to fight once again. I stand to grab his arm, stopping his movements. He turns his head, looking ready to rumble, but stopping dead in his tracks when he sees it's me.

Picking up the wooden sword, I hand it to my mate. As our skin briefly touches, I notice his skin begin to turn its normal shade once more. Making him look more human than demon once more. Without a word, he slashes the sword into the air, right through his brother's heart.

Diedrek

The feel of the sword slicing through the skin and bone of my brother's chest makes the unrequited hate and anger subside almost immediately. Knowing one of the monsters that have always taken over my life is gone for good. Leaving the sword in, I stand from my brothers body.

Turning toward my mate, I look her up and down in a slow caress. Seeing that blood is no longer dripping from her back, a calmness fills my lungs. Without a care for any of the others around us, no care for the fighting, blood, screams, and agony I walk right up close to her.

Wrapping my arm around her waist, I drag her into my body and kiss the living hell out her lips. Knowing what just occurred with her, I need this more than anything right now. We stand here, in a passionate bubble. With our hands, teeth, and tongue battling for dominance.

I don't think of anything other than her beating heart. I can almost feel the blood coursing through her body, I am so hyper aware of my woman. She wraps her arms around my neck pulling me closer still. Reaching my hands behind her, I take ahold of her ass, lifting her up, I slam her back against the nearest tree. With both hands caging her in, she wraps her legs around my waist. The entire time our lips have been joined.

I can hear the cheers of my people as the few of my father's followers that have survived take off. All of them are retreating, bringing my sexual thoughts to a halt. My father is dead. I killed the fucker and burned him into a pile of ash on the ground. I bite my beloveds bottom lip, licking away the blood as I growl in satisfaction.

She must know exactly what I'm thinking as she pulls on the strands of my hair. Bringing my head back, she licks the skin of my neck. Before sinking her teeth deep into my carotid artery. I moan with glee, feeling hot and bothered the longer I'm not inside of her.

The sound of Darius's cry stops us both where we stand. "Constance!"

Satine!"

My mate quickly drops her legs from around my body, looking behind me. I cover her in case there is any immediate danger, but as I face my best friend and brother, I see him kneeling on the ground.

As my sadistic brother and his father give him one last wink as they carry the two women into the portal they had opened.

"No," Kyla whispers as she runs out of my arms and to the closing portal. She doesn't make it in time, and I stand there in shock and disbelief as I watch my mate fall to the ground.

"Bring them back! You can't have them!" She cries out into the early morning light. I walk closer to her, just as we hear the foot falling coming over the hill. Out of the corner of my eye I see her uncle and cousins, as well as the Rebel Community standing there. All their eyes wide, mouths fallen open.

Knowing what my younger brother and Tristan are capable of I too want to join them on the ground. I do not wish to think about what they will do to both Constance and Satine. I feel like a failure. I was supposed to protect Satine, I promised her.

After all we accomplished here tonight, in the end I failed just the same.
