Chapter 38: The Black Book
Kyla
I don't know how long we stay like this on the ground, but it is ruined the moment there is a high-pitched scream. We break apart, all three of us jumping to our feet. My uncle grabs his sword in one hand from his back sheath and holds a stake in his other. I hear the metal scrape across my cousin Lucas' two swords, as he pulls them from where they are strapped on his back. Out of the corner of my eye, I see him take a fighting stance.
I bend my body, as my fangs elongate, ready for the possibility of a fight right now. More screams pierce the night sky. Gaining our attention to our right, we can see the three sister witches hunched on their knees. Their hands held over their ears, as they release a painful cry. My brows furrow in confusion, looking around for our enemy I do not see anyone here.
Moving closer to where they are, I can hear Bunny calling out for penance.
"We are sorry! Stop this!" She hollers in agony.
"What is happening?" I try to gain her attention. She must hear me, as her eyes pop open, they are the color of blood.
"She has it." Her voice breaks as another convulsion racks her body.
"Who?" I step closer to her, but a hand darts out, taking a hold of my arm. Stopping me in my tracks, knowing its Diedrek, I remain calm, even though I am a wreck inside.
"What does that person have?" My teeth retract, as a silent sob falls from my open mouth. I cannot bare to see anyone suffer in this way.
"The black book." She says just as something strikes her face, causing blood to fly, as a scratch forms along the length of her cheek. "What book is she referring to?" Before I can speak my question for all to hear, a young woman I have never seen before comes running out of the darkness of the trees. My brother Darius right behind her.
"Oh no." I hear her say as she gets a foot away from where I stand.
"We need to form a circle." She holds out her hand, palm up towards me. I look at it as though it may bite.
"Trust me." Her words have my eyes shooting to hers. I can see she has the same green eyes as Darius and I. Letting me know all I need; this is my older sister.
Without any more hesitation, I take her hand with mine. She smiles at me, as I smile back at her I feel another take my hand. Diedrek is standing beside me, with Satine beside him.
"Form a circle around them." She hollers at us over the screams. We do as we are told, watching the three sisters fold into themselves in pain.
I feel so helpless, as well as feeling confused. I don't understand what is happening to them. "Close your eyes and repeat after me." Constance yells, making sure she is well heard. I am not sure what she is saying, at this point I am simply on auto pilot. I repeat the words, so I can help, but in reality, all my focus is on the three women in the center of our circle.
After a few minutes, a golden glow form around us. Within minutes, the sisters stop their convulsing and screaming out in pain all together. They simply lay where they had fallen on the ground. Crying softly to themselves. "Get some blankets. We need to cover them up." Constance says to someone standing behind us.
The next moment, a plain grey blanket is held in front of my face. I take it with a nod of thanks, as I kneel beside Bunny. Wrapping it around her body, I can feel the quivering of her limbs.
"I'm so sorry." I whisper so low, making sure she is the only one that can hear me.
She simply nods her head once, letting me know she heard my words. I help her stand to her feet, allowing her to place all her body weight on me. Constance, stands in front of us, holding out two necklaces. She must see the confusion held in my eyes, as she answers my unspoken question.
"For protection. Anyone with witch's blood needs one around their neck. Making sure the evil cannot reach them."
I'm not entirely certain I understand, but I know she will explain soon. Taking the necklace, I place it around my neck, as I begin to walk closer to the fire. Once the sisters are settled near the fire, the physician of the rebels looks them over. I stand, and make my way to where Diedrek, my uncle, cousins, and siblings stand.
When I make it by Diedrek's side, his arm automatically reaches out for me. He wraps it around my shoulders, bringing me close to his body. Kissing the top of my head, he holds onto me tightly. I know he needs to feel me just as much as I do him. What just happened was a frightening event.
"Anyone want to explain to me what that was?" I can hear the impatience growing in Lucas' tone as he asks the inevitable question.
"You can explain to them. I just need a moment." Diedrek says out loud, as he brings his other arm around me, causing my body to turn into his chest. I lay my head against his heart, listening to the slow beat of it.
"That would be a spell from the black book of magic." I hear my sister speak up for everyone to hear.
"What?!" My older cousins say at the same time.
"Would you like to explain Broderick?" At Constance's condescending tone toward my uncle, I pull away from Diedrek so I may turn my body and look to see what's happening around us.
Looking at my uncle, I see he is standing with his legs spread out, his arms folded over his chest, as his nostrils flare with hostility. "It's known at the black book of magic because of all the evil contents held within." His voice comes out solemn.
"It has some of the most powerful spells of all time. My grandfather was an evil warlock obsessed with bringing pain to everyone of this world."
His eyes make their way to each one of us. With that look on his face, we know this is going to be one hell of a story. "My father took him down. How I'm not certain, but when he did, he brought the book back with him. Told me to hide it where I know no soul will ever be able to find it."
His eyes seek me out, and when he finds me, he stares at me intently. "The only other soul who knew where to find it, was my baby sister. She followed me into the woods that night." It takes a moment for me to realize what he is saying.
When he does, pure fury runs through my veins. My mother now has the book, the one that could bring pain and sorrow to us all. When did she find it? More importantly how do we get it back? Diedrek must hear my inner turmoil, he gathers me in his arms and kisses my face all over.
"Enough for tonight. We need to rest." Without another word, he lifts me into his arms, turns around giving everyone his back, and walks us away from the crowd of people. With me burying my face in his chest, as my silent tears fall down my face.
