Chapter 13: Morning Comes

Kyla

I wake up with a start as I hear voices nearby. I jackknife up into a sitting position, and instant dizziness and nausea hits me.

"Ow." I grumble as I rub my temples.

"What is happening?" I groan out loud into the room.

"Who is yelling?" I ask no one in particular. Almost certain I am alone in the room.

"No one is yelling, your senses are just magnified now that you're a full-on vampire." I hear Satine's voice coming from the corner of the room.

I wasn't expecting anyone to answer, let alone be in the room with me, so I shout in surprise. Which makes my head hurt that much more. I hear a giggle and look between my fingers. I see Satine sitting there, holding her hand over her mouth, trying but failing to hide her laughter.

"Sorry, I wasn't thinking. Figured I would be here for you when you woke up." She gives me a shy smile.

"I feel like I got hit by a stampede of cows and dragged for several feet before I came to a stop." She looks at me with her head tilted to the side.

She goes to say something, but I cut her off before she can, "this feels worse than any hangover of which I have heard. And believe me, I have seen some of the adults look horrible and feel like total poop after a night of drinking."

She gives me another smile. "Well now you know it's not okay to drink. Although us vampires don't stay drunk for long, if we can get drunk at all. It takes a lot of drinks for us to get that way, and it only lasts for an hour tops. Then, we become sober once more." She waves her hand in the air insinuating her point as she speaks.

Knowing I need to face the day, I push the covers off my body, and swing my legs over the side. I pause for a moment. Looking toward the door to the bathroom, it seems so close, but feels so far away.

"Try going fast. You'll get there in seconds." My head swings in her direction, and I see her nod her head to the bathroom door.

My brows furrow, wondering what she is talking about. Then it hits me, I was fast before I turned, I can only imagine my speed now. With a new determination, I force my body to move. I'm standing in the bathroom, doing my business, and washing my hands, and make it back to the bedroom in what feels like seconds.

"Whoa, that is intense." I stare at Satine, my eyes wide open in surprise.

She shrugs her shoulders, "Yes, it's one of the many advantages we vampires have. Wait until I introduce you to all the other extraordinary gifts we have." She grabs my hand and walks us to the door.

She opens it and once again I can hear Diedrek and Darius discussing something. I can only make out certain words, the rest sound like a jumble mess.

"They don't want us to hear everything. So certain things they are keeping between the two of them by talking telepathically." Satine explains as we make our way down the hall to the kitchen.

"What are we doing?" I question.

I could have sworn we were going to see Diedrek and Darius.

"Getting you something to eat of course." She looks back at me and throws her head back with a laugh. I guess my face showed my confusion.

"Our main source of nutrition is human blood, but we still need to eat silly." She stops on a giggle.

"I had no idea. I never really saw any of you eat. Since I've been here, I usually eat alone." I tell her honestly.

"Well, we don't have to eat as much. Extraordinarily little honestly, but we do still eat. It's more for indulgence I suppose you could say." She stops talking once we reach the living area and kitchen combined open space.

I see a large table was brought into the room, filled with plates of food. So much food, I'm not sure if it will all be eaten. Seems a little wasteful to me if I'm being honest. "So, why are we eating this morning then?

"Diedrek and your brother wanted to keep things as normal for you this morning as possible." She answers while grabbing us each a plate.

It hits me then; I have a brother. I completely forgot with all the things that have been going on. Can't believe I forgot someone like Darius, a wise ass, silly, and funny character is my relative. Then, another thought hits me, making the acid in my stomach churn. His father is my biological father.

I haven't yet met the man, but I have heard from Darius himself that he is a monster. The things he could have done to my mother. What she may have gone through at his hands. And I share blood with him, I look down at my free hand, and feel ill.

"Hey," my eyes raise to the tone of her voice.

"Are you okay?" I see her eyes are squinted and her brows are furrowed above them.

She walks over to me and places her hand on my forehead. "We don't get sick, but you seem like you may feel off. Do you need to sit down, I can get Diedrek and Darius, if they will help?"

I shake my head, to clear the thoughts away. I don't need her worrying about my wellbeing. I especially, don't need her getting the boys from whatever they are doing now. "Don't be silly." I wave her off with my hand.

"I'm fine really." I give her my best reassuring smile I can muster.

She seems hesitant. Keeps looking down the hall towards Diedrek's library door. That must be where they are.

"Really Satine, I'm fine I promise." I grab her hand and face us in the direction of the table full of food.

"Now help me eat some of this food, I don't think I can eat it all by myself." We share a giggle and start filling up our plates. I suddenly feel ravenous, and the food is making my mouth salivate.
