The File
~Flashback~
First day at the Mental Hospital
Jack awoke in a hospital looking room, covered in IV's. He looked around for any sign of a doctor or a nurse, but he couldn't find any. He looked up towards the wall and laid his head back. He heaved a sigh of relief. It was only just a dream...
A nurse with a clipboard came into the room, jotting down several notes. She peered up and saw that Jack was awake.
"Good Morning Mr. Mcloughlin. How are ya doin today?" The cheery plump woman brought over a small tray from the entrance, stacked with pill bottles and needles.
Jack pulled his hand up, tenderly rubbing his temple. "I have no idea." The nurse smiled once again and set the tray onto the bed next to him.
"Ya, you were pretty banged up when we found ya. You were just dropped off on our porch. What a weird thi-"
"You what?" Jack said, bolting to an upright position. He ignored the thumping pain pulsating throughout his body.
"Settle down there Seán, everythin's gonna be all right." She placed a hand on his shoulder which he quickly brushed off.
"You didn't find me at the bottom of a two-story house?" He said nervously. "Why would we of found ya there?" The nurse said, flustered and confused.
"I attempted suicide. I should've landed there." Jack said it easily, even through the words hurt as they rolled off his tongue. The nurse gasped. "Oh my! That's dreadful! The file was right I suppose..." She said.
"What file?" He said. His temper was growing short.
The nurse answered with a straight a face as she could manage. "You were plopped on our front steps with a bag o'er ya head. There was a file next to ya with all your information. We thought some teens beat ya up and put the file there as a joke. But I suppose not."
"How long ago was I dropped off here?" Said an unfamiliar voice coming from his own lips. It was low and gravely, but high-pitched and menacing all at the same time.
The nurse looked calm and collected, but her eyes were laced with fear as her pupils dilated. She smiled. "Ya were dropped off 5 days ago. Knocked out cold, we thought ya were in a coma." She laughed painfully. She reached down casually for a needle filled it with medicine. She held up the needle like the conversation didn't happen. "Time for your meds!"
She leaned forward, grabbing his arm softly. She lifted the needle and was starting to press it into his skin. His eyes were going crazy, looking at her, looking at the needle, then to his arm, then the door. He couldn't think. Or maybe he was thinking too much.
His arm instinctively reached for the needle. He pulled it out of her grasp and held it above her head. "Seán..." the nurse said, with a fucking fake smile still on her face. He breathed heavily, now on his knees in the small hospital bed. "What?!" His mouth spat an unfamiliar sound.
"They said the smiling would calm you down if you got out of control. Please Seán..." the nurse was starting to shake but her smile was still intact. "Who said that?" Jack snapped.
"The... the file said you could..." she trailed off. "FINISH YOUR SENTENCE!" He screamed.
"It said you could smell fear!" She said, a tear streaming down her cheek. Jack paused to stare at her, but his body seemed to move. "I don't smell fear." He said, reluctantly leaning forward until his face was inches away from the nurse's. "I smell liars."
His hand came down upon the nurse and the needle pressed into her neck. He grabbed her arm and shoved her to the cold hospital floor. She landed with a crack, and she squealed in pain. Jack didn't even notice. He jumped out of his bed and suddenly his legs were planted on the roof. What was happening?
The breeze blew his hospital gown back and forth. His hair was a complete mess, and he was staring over the edge of a 4-story hospital. A mental hospital. He had seen this building before. It's the Athlone Home for the Mentally Unstable.
He breathed in a breath of fresh air as his feet started moving forward. He couldn't control himself. His toes were now hanging off. And with a breath of wind, his body fell forward.
