Chapter Three

I quietly sat in my room, thinking about the earlier events that had taken place. After my mom and I freaked out a little bit the neighbour lady had come over to complain about a missing garden gnome. She freaked out too when she we explained what happened.

I am so confused. Why in the world did I have that dream about something like that? It’s so unlikely that it would come true.

Suddenly, my mom burst through the door, frowning at me deeply.

“Where were you last night?” she asked sternly. I thought about it for a bit.

“In Harmony’s room, then I went to bed,” I replied, raising an eyebrow.

“Mrs. Gardener said she saw someone in her yard last night. A girl about your age...” she said, studying me. I frowned; I definitely hadn’t left my bedroom last night.

“Well somebody was...” she mumbled. I stayed quiet, not knowing what to say next. My mom obviously didn’t know what to say either because she left the room.

Suddenly I heard my door reopen. Harmony peaked through, with a cheery smile on her face.

“What’s going on outside?” she enquired. Her smiled turned into concern when she saw the look on my face, “I'm guessing it’s not good?”

I shook my head, a shiver running down my spine when memories of the dead cat returned to my mind. Not a very good memory.

“Well,” I started, “we found a dead cat on the lawn...”

“That’s it?” she laughed, amused by the topic.

“Nope,” I stated. She stared at me, confused as to what I meant, “Its belly was sliced open with a garden gnome.”

The look on her face was priceless- she looked like I had hit her in the face with a baseball bat. We were silent for a long time. In fact, it may have been ten minutes.

“Whoa...” she whispered.

Ten more minutes passed without a single word said.

“So why were you acting so upset yesterday?” I asked her slowly, hoping that she wouldn’t respond harshly.

“Just some stuff...” she muttered quietly, only loud enough for me to hear.

“Like...?” I pressed on.

            “Well... I like this boy...”

Oh great, I thought, boy troubles.

“And I don’t think he likes me back...” she finished. I was surprised, what boy didn’t like my sister back? The only ones that I’ve ever known of were gay, and even one or two turned straight for her.

“That’s it?” I asked, “that’s what made u bawl your eyes out last night?”

She looked hurt as the words came out of my mouth.

“I- err, did you ask him? I mean, how do you know he doesn’t like you back?” I inquired.

“I asked him out,” she whispered, “and then he turned me down.” I stared at her in disbelief. What would possess any guy to turn down my sister? I thought about it for a moment, not able to come up with any one guy who could resist her temptation.

“Who was it?” I asked, still pondering it myself. She bit her lip, obviously not ready to tell me or even discuss this matter with me. I decided to change the question instead, “why did he turn you down?”

“He... likes someone else,” she whispered, obviously embarrassed by what she was telling me.

“I see,” was all I could say.

“Want to watch a movie?” Harmony smiled. I nodded happily, “as long as it’s not scary...”

She laughed, agreeing with me. We both stood up, and trotted downstairs, ready to search for a movie in our DVD cabinet in the living room.

Looking through it we realized there wasn’t much to watch. We had seen each movie several times and knew the words off by heart.

I heard Harmony mumble something quietly before she said, “let’s go rent a movie or something...”

I nodded in agreement. She smiled at me as we left to go to get some cash from her piggy bank.

Afterwards we headed straight for the car. Harmony already has her G2, I’ve only made it to my G1 so far because I'm terrified of driving, but besides that- Harmony’s a great driver. She’s promised me for a while that she’d teach me how to drive before I go for my G2.

As we drove down the street, I saw a familiar face walking down the street. It was Veronica, the girl I had bumped into, literally, when I went for that walk the other day.

I waved, hoping that she remembered who I was. Her eyes squinted when she saw me waving but she managed to recognize who I was and she waved back, smiling like a girl who was reunited with a friend that she hadn’t seen in years. I smiled back.

“Who were you just waving to?” asked Harmony, with a concerned look on her face.

“A girl I had met the other day. Her name is Veronica,” I explained.

“Oh... maybe I just didn’t see her,” she mumbled.

“Probably, we are going past the speed limit...” I laughed, “No wonder you didn’t get to see her.”

Harmony pressed on the breaks to slow down, realizing that we were going twenty over the assigned speed limit.

“Wow, I'm glad a cop didn’t see that,” she sighed.

“I’d say,” I retorted.

We soon pulled up to the Video Rental Shop, cleverly named Video Rental Shop, and got out of the car. Before I even got out, Harmony was already inside flirting with the clerk. He was cute, tall, dark, and handsome; everything my sister looks for in a guy. I rolled my eyes as they continued to flirt with each other.

I ignored them and walked over to the videos all lined up against the wall. I quickly passed the horror section, hoping that my sister would do the same and ignore it. After all, I don’t want to have more nightmares.

I passed by the romance section as well, not really in the mood for something that I’d probably never have in my entire life; romance. My mind immediately headed over to Matt, with his cute little dimples and the way he says my name. I shook my head and got rid of the thought. I shouldn’t be thinking about him, not while he likes my sister.

Just as I was about to head over to the comedy section I bumped into someone. I looked at the person I had bumped into, it was Veronica.

“Hey,” I said, smiling. She stared at me for a little bit.

“Oh my-gosh, what a coincidence!” she exclaimed happily.

“What have you been up to lately?” I asked.

“You know, this and that,” she stated, “what about you?”

“Not much. I'm getting a movie with my sister right now.”

 “You have a sister?”

“Twin actually.”

“That’s so cool!”

“I suppose...” I muttered.

“Why do you say that?” she asked.

“We don’t have much in common. We’re always fighting,” I explained.

“Oh, yeah I know what that’s like,” she said rolling her eyes. I was about to ask her if she had any siblings, until I noticed she was holding a piece of paper of some sort.

“What’s that in your hand?” I inquired. She held up a familiar looking flier. I noticed what it was for right away.

“Are you going?” I asked. Still looking at the flier for my sister’s recital.

“I'm not really sure yet. I might be,” she replied.

“I don’t have a choice,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Why not?” she wondered.

“That’s my sister. That’s why,” I told her.

“Oh... wow, that’s great! I had no idea,” she smiled. I sighed; she didn’t understand that this was not a good thing.

“Yeah, I suppose.”

“Anyways,” she started, “I’ve got to go.”

“Yeah, see you,” I said, disappointedly. She turned around and walked off, just before my sister came around the corner.

“Who were you just talking to?” she inquired.

“Veronica,” I answered.

“Darn, missed her again,” she humoured.

“Yeah... do you have an idea of what we should watch?” I wondered.

“I was thinking about a thriller of some sort,” she decided. I paused for a second, that didn’t sound too bad. I mean, at least she didn’t suggest horror again. I pondered it for a little bit before I nodded in agreement.

We headed over to the thriller section and looked through all of the movies. There were movies like Jennifer’s Body, the Open Window (starring Johnny Depp of course), Inception, etc.

I watched as she took out a movie and read the back.

“Let’s take this one,” she suggested.

“Which one is it?”

“You’ll see,” she winked. I shuttered. That means it’s probably going to be pretty scary then. Thrillers to me aren’t too far off from horror movie. Especially the psychological thrillers like the Open Window.

We got back into the car and started to drive off, just as a crack of thunder roared through the sky. We both jumped, finally noticing that the sky had become dark, threatening another storm.

“What’s with the storms lately?” I wondered.

“Good question,” Harmony muttered to herself. I watched out the window as the storm circulated and grew darker. It looked like this would be a really bad storm.

Another rumble of thunder could be heard as we turned the corner onto Fifth Street, followed up by lightening that covered the whole sky. Causing a huge flash of light that hurt my eyes. It’s worse for Harmony, considering she’s driving. I hope we get home safely...

It started to rain just as we were a block away from home. I could see people on the street scrambling to find shelter as it started to downpour.

We finally made it to the house and ran inside, shielding our heads with our arms; hoping that we wouldn’t be soaked by the time we got inside.

Unfortunately, we were just soaked, we were drenched. My mom stared at us in awe as we shut the door.

“You guys are wet,” she stated.

No, really, Harmony rolled her eyes sarcastically, “how can you tell?”

I stifled a laugh, my mom always pointed out the obvious.

“Well for one, your dripping water,” mom laughed. Her smile slipped off her face as Harmony started to walk into the kitchen, “hey, take your clothes off. I don’t want water trails everywhere.”

“Right here?” I asked.

“Well yeah, do it now,” she smirked, “before you dad comes home and see’s his two half naked daughters standing in the kitchen.”

“Fair enough,” mumbled Harmony under her breath. We quickly took off our clothes and ran upstairs to go get changed.

As soon as I got into my room, I dropped my clothes on the floor by my bed and searched through my closet for something else to wear.

I found a red tank top and some skinny blue jeans. I was too lazy to put anything else on, or even to brush my hair, so I quickly put them on and trotted down the stairs.

My dad was home now and he was sitting in the living room watching the news on our TV. I sat next to him and watched intently as they talked about the storm and how it was unpredicted that there were to be a storm in the first place.

“Man, they are awful at predicting weather,” my dad enthused. I nodded in agreement, this was one of the worst storms I’ve ever seen and they can’t even predict it? That’s just ridiculous.

I could hear the rain becoming heavier against the window pane and I'm pretty sure I could even hear hail start up, too.

Harmony walked into the room and looked at the TV. She didn’t look amused; in fact, she seemed a tad bit annoyed that the TV was being occupied right now.

“Dad, Mel and I are going to watch a movie. Get out,” she demanded. My dad looked at her; he kind of looked pissed right now actually.

“Don’t use that tone of voice with me, missy,” he dismissed. He grabbed the remote and turned the TV off. Harmony smiled in victory, she had won. My dad gave her a dirty look as he left the room.

She proceeded to sit next to me after she put the DVD in the DVD-player.

“What movie is this?” I asked, realizing that I still didn’t know the title of movie I had agreed to watch.

“Paranormal Activity 1,” she smirked. My eyes widened.

“Isn’t that a horror movie?” I complained.

“Probably, but it was in the thriller section,” she responded. I rolled my eyes, well isn’t this just great...?

She giggled as the previews came on, excited that we were going to watch another horror movie.

By now I was wishing that I hadn’t passed by the romance section at the Movie Rental Store. That would have been a lot better than what I was seeing right now.

I flinched as there was a huge crash coming from inside the bedroom as they slept. I had heard from friends that this movie wasn’t the least bit scary, but my poor heart couldn’t stop its rapid beating.

I looked at the clock, it was eleven o’clock. My parents were probably asleep by now. I looked over at my sister; she looked deeply engrossed in the movie, not looking away for a second.

Suddenly, I realized I needed to go to the washroom. My bladder felt like it was going to explode if I didn’t go now.

“Be right back,” I muttered to Harmony, knowing that she probably wouldn’t hear me.  I trotted up the stairs and turned on the bathroom light.

My eyes widened as I stared into the mirror. It took a while to process what I was seeing, because what I was seeing wasn’t me. In fact, it didn’t even look human.

I stared at it for a while, trying to stifle a scream but failing miserably in the process. I looked at it some more, until finally I screamed. Even I thought it was blood curdling.

I ran down the stairs as fast as humanly possible, tripping over my own feet as I continued to scream.

As I was about to run into the living room, I bumped into somebody. I fell to the floor rubbing my poor head. I looked up, seeing Harmony glaring at me like I was stupid.

“Why in the world are you screaming?” she said looking pissed, “you scared me!”

I stared at her in awe, “I...I-”

I couldn’t stop stuttering. She looked at the state I was in and her expression softened. She held out her hand for me to grab. I shakily took it and she pulled me up.

“What happened?” she asked, wiping the hair out of my eyes. It was obvious that I wasn’t going to say anything right now, so she continued to hold my hand, comforting me. She began to pull me up the stairs, until I began to cream and pull away.

She looked horrified, and she let go of my hand.

“Don’t go up there...” I whispered. She looked surprised and taken back.

“W-why not?” she asked quietly. I didn’t say anything, I just stared.

“What’s wrong?” she asked. My eyes stared in horror at what I saw behind her. She turned around, obviously freaked out by my expression.

But she turned back to look at me, even more confused.

“I don’t see it,” she stated. I looked at her, taking my eyes off of the strange being behind her, and when I looked back it was gone. My heart was still pounding against my chest and my eyes were still wide and alert.

Harmony held out her hand, still waiting for me to just take it and go upstairs with her. I hesitated, but the look on her face was soft and assuring. I took it, and we slowly made our way up the stairs. We finally made it to her bedroom and sat down on her bed, against the wall.

“Want to tell me what just happened?”

I shook my head, not wanting to say anything. The thoughts kept coming back to my head. The image that I had seen in the mirror was a girl. She looked like the same one from my terrifying dream the other night.

“Please? I can’t help you if I don’t know what’s wrong,” she said.

“I, I saw something,” I finally managed to say.

“What did you see?”

I shook my head again, thinking that if I would say anything I’d see something once again. To be honest, I’ve never been so scared in my whole life.

We sat there in the silence for a while, both of us too freaked out to say anything else.

“Can I sleep in here tonight?” I finally piped up.

“Sure,” she nodded with a smile.

I didn’t take long before we both fell a sleep... with the lights on of course. I mean, c’mon, would you sleep with the lights off after what I just seen?
