After we ate our ice-cream, we finally went to the theatre. It was already about to start by the time we arrived and as we walked inside we handed our tickets to the door man and found a spot to sit in the front row of the middle section.
“So when is this thing starting exactly?” Matt asked.
“At seven o’clock I think...” I replied slowly, trying to remember if that was correct.
“Oh I see... looks like we’re sitting here doing nothing for about fifteen minutes, then,” he muttered under his breath.
“So what should we talk about until then?” he asked after a long period of silence.
“I don’t really know... you got any ideas?”
“Not really actually,” he replied.
“I made a new friend,” I stated, “just the other day. We bumped into each other... literally.”
He laughed, sending chills up my spine. He had possibly the cutest laugh I’ve ever heard. I shook the thought from my head, remembering that it wasn’t me who he liked. It was my sister.
I'm not sure how I can never remember something as important as that. I can’t go on like this anymore, especially if he ever finds out about me liking him. That just would never work out. He would ignore me for the rest of my life if he found out that little tidbit of information.
“And how’d that work out?” he asked.
“Well, we’re pretty good friends now,” I giggled, “So I’d say it worked out just fine.”
“That’s good,” he smiled, “I'm going to have to meet her sometime. Just in case it turns out she’s a bad influence.”
“Of course!” I laughed. I turned red; embarrassed by my constant giggling whenever he was around. It’s a good thing the lights were low; otherwise he’d see my face. I don’t think he’d be very attracted to me if he saw how red my cheeks were.
“So how’s school then? Is it as good as your social life?” he asked jokingly.
“Hah, yeah right,” I laughed mockingly, “math sucks. I just bombed that test on Monday and I almost didn’t pass the science test the week before.”
“Wow that really does suck...” he whispered as more people filed in and the lights dimmed, “I could tutor you in math if you want me to.”
“Sure!” I grinned. I heard a few people telling us to shush up behind us and I covered my mouth and tried to hold in a giggle while Matt smirked and tried to not to laughing.
“Okay, but I don’t do science so you’ll have to find someone else to help you with that one,” he replied. I nodded, knowing how awful he was at science. He was in my science class last year and he puked when we had to dissect frogs.
He looked at his watch to check the time.
“Five more minutes,” he whispered quietly.
“I'm so bored,” I sighed, “I want it to start soon.”
“Agreed...” he muttered only loud enough for me to hear. I looked behind me a few rows and saw a smiling face waving at me. It was Veronica, next to a woman who was middle aged with dark brown hair. I figured that must be her mom. Though their eyes aren’t much alike, she must get them from her dad or something.
I waved back grinning. Matt turned to look at me, “who are you waving at?”
“My new friend that I was telling you about earlier- Veronica, remember?” I reminded him. He looked thoughtful for a moment and then nodded understandably.
“Yeah I remember,” he smiled. He craned his neck to see if she was still in the crowd; which by the way, she wasn’t. There were more people sitting in the crowd, so it was harder to see her.
“Darn, she must be already sitting down,” I stated, “I can’t see her anywhere.”
“So when am I going to be able to meet this Veronica girl?” he asked after a while.
“Soon,” I smiled, “I hope anyways... she always seems to disappear whenever I point her out o my family.”
“Well that’s weird... maybe she’s a ghost,” he joked. I laughed and pushed him playfully.
“Shut up... you know how stuff like that scares me!” I whispered as the lights went out and the stage lights turned on.
“Yeah I know... but it’s just so funny when you’re scared,” he laughed. I rolled my eyes at him, making him chuckle quietly to himself.
“Whatever,” I smiled.
“Shh!” I heard a girl hush behind me. Matt looked over his shoulder and then back to me. “That’s what you get,” he snickered.
“Shh!” we heard again. We grinned at each other, obviously irritating other people around us. It wasn’t long before we heard high heels clicking against the huge stage in front of us. Everyone looked up in awe of the beauty that was indeed my sister, causing me to roll my eyes again irritably.
I looked over at Matt, who was completely mesmerized and didn’t look over at me. I don’t blame him at all though; she looks so pretty that it’s unbelievable. She wore a long white dress that sparkled in the spot light, her hair tied up in a bun perfectly. She made me look like garbage compared to her.
I rested my head in my hand. A minute ago it would have seemed like we were actually flirting, but as soon as she comes into the picture he’s distracted.
I looked up at the stage again as my sister placed her violin in the crook of her neck and held it firmly with bother her head and her hand.
Harmony glanced down at where Matt and I were sitting, I couldn’t exactly tell, but it almost looked like she was looking at us in despair, it was that look she gave me whenever she felt heartbroken.
She raised her bow and drew it delicately across the strings of her violin, moving her fingers with ease. Closing her eyes she moved her arm swiftly, causing a beautiful sound to come out of her instrument. It sounded amazing... I could hear no mistakes and I doubt anyone else would be able to hear any neither.
I looked over at Matt; he was still staring up at her in awe. He looked over at me after a while and smiled.
“What are you looking at?” he asked. I was surprised and didn’t know what else to say and I was suddenly speechless.
“I- err... I didn’t know I was staring...” I stuttered, “I guess I was just out of it.”
He nodded understandably, still smiling. I blushed and looked away; frustrated that he had seen me staring at him like that. He must be really freaked out.
As Harmony went on it became faster and harsher, it almost seemed angry now. Even her expression looked like she was ready to cry out with such anger and force. That’s what I like about my sister though; she really gets into it when she plays. She can look pretty upset when it’s a sad or angry song, and she can look so care free when it’s a happy song.
I suddenly became nervous when she was beginning to get harsher in harsher. The worst part is, every time she looked at me, that’s when it seemed to get harsher.
I was relieved when she let her arms drop to her side, gripping her violin and bow tightly in her hands.
Everyone began to cheer and applaud for her. She took a deep bow and still held the same sorrowful look in her eyes as before, a fake smile covering up her obvious pain.
I thought about maybe asking her if she was alright... asking her if there was anything wrong or even if I had done something to upset her.
Harmony was still on the stage, waiting for her piano accompanist to sit at the grand piano sitting in the corner of the stage and play her t he intro of her next piece.
The accompanist was short and I little bit of a round fellow. He sat down at the piano and started going through a pile of sheet music. After fumbling through the pile and dropping a few pages here and there he placed his hands on the keys and began to play beautifully.
My sister lifted her violin again and pulled her bow against the strings gently. This piece was lighter and happier, faster even. I sighed in relief as her expression seemed to soften a bit and her eyes closed peacefully.
“Isn’t your sister amazing at the violin?” asked matt, still dazed by her talent and her beauty as she played.
“Yeah, she really is...” I smiled, not wanting to seem like I was jealous in anyway. He smiled at me warmly, causing my heart to melt once again.
It wasn’t long before the song ended and my sister curtsied as everyone applauded wildly, including Matt of course. I saw a few people in the crowd giving her a standing ovation. Harmony smiled in response, a glint of happiness finally reaching her eyes.
She walked off stage as another young girl with a cello, dragging a chair behind her as well, walked on the front of the stage.
Matt directed his attention from the stage to me as soon as my sister left.
“Wasn’t that great?” he exclaimed happily. I stared into his eyes for a bit, almost hoping that he didn’t see the disappointment in mine.
“What’s wrong?” he asked after I didn’t reply.
“Um... nothing, I’ll be right back,” I said, starting to get up. I had to go find Harmony... there was something wrong with her, and it probably has something to do with me.
Suddenly there was a hand that grabbed mine just as I was about to go find my way backstage.
“Where are you going?” asked Matt.
“I'm just going to go find my sister...” I slowly answered, trying to decipher the emotions on his face.
He slowly began to let go, still looking kind of worried. I smiled at him reassuringly as I started off again. My heart thumped as he smiled back, worry still in his eyes, but at the same time it was comforting.
“Be right back,” I smiled. I walked through the hallways of the theatre, looking for a door that had been labelled dressing rooms.
It didn’t even take very long before I found it and slipped through the door without anyone seeing me.
I looked down the long narrow hallway; there were doors on every side of the hall. There had to be at least ten of them, and if I couldn’t find the right one then I’d probably be screwed because I’d be found by someone and they’d probably kick me out.
I looked at the gold nameplates on each door, tiptoeing so no one could hear the sound of my high heels clicking against the shiny tile floor. As I neared the end I could finally see Harmony’s name on the door. I knocked quaintly and tried to open the door as I began to hear some muffled cries coming from inside. It was locked...
“Harmony, c’mon open the door,” I persuaded, “its Mel. Please open up...”
I heard the crying stop and it suddenly became eerily silent. The doorknob started to twist after I waited a few seconds through the quietness.
The door opened just a bit, Harmony peered through the crack, her eyes red and her face blotchy, from crying I assume.
“What’s the matter?” I asked softly. She glared at me... obviously she didn’t want to talk to anybody at the moment.
I waited patiently for an answer, trying not to push it too far so that she’d yell at me. She opened the door a little bit more, letting me inside.
After the door shut she looked at me and her eyes began to water a tremendous amount. I looked at her with wide eyes, watching her fall apart. She sat down on a chair. She wasn’t bawling, or sobbing, or crying an entire waterfall. In fact, she was fairly calm for someone who was having an emotional breakdown. Her eyes were tearing up and her lips were trembling like no tomorrow.
“Can I know what it is that is bothering you now?” I asked her again. She looked at me with her big puppy dog eyes, her lips still trembling immensely.
“You’ll think I'm just a stupid girl,” she whispered.
“No, I won’t,” I assured her.
“Pinkie promise?” she asked, holding out her shaky pinkie finger. I nodded as I locked my pinkie around hers.
“Well... it’s the same thing as the last time I was upset...”
“A boy?” I guessed before she finished her sentence, “how do you even know he doesn’t have the same feelings?”
“Because... he told me,” she whispered sadly, “not directly... I mean, he doesn’t even know I like him... but he told me that he likes another girl.”
“What’s so special about this guy anyways? You’ve never cried about any guy like this before,” I stated.
“But, I actually like this guy. I’ve never been rejected before,” she frowned, tears forming in her eyes again. I raised my eyebrows at her. How does she think I feel? I’ve gotten rejected hundreds of times before... what’s one rejection? It can’t be that bad.
“Who is he anyways... I don’t think you told me last time we talked about this,” I said.
“Um... I can’t say,” she mumbled.
“Why not?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Because you know him, and all three of us have been friends for a while.” She explained. I was shocked... I knew exactly who she meant. I know it’s probably not best to assume things, but when you know a single guy who has been friends with Harmony and has not yet dated her, you tend to assume.
“Matthew?” I exclaimed. She nodded sheepishly, her cheeks turning red at the mention of his name. The first thought that came to my mind as his name left my mouth was, he doesn’t like her?
“But it always seemed like-”
“Yeah... that’s just him being friendly,” she interjected. I was speechless, I didn’t know what to say, it just seemed like he had always like Harmony; always opening doors, buying her lunch, sitting on the same bus seat... it just all seemed so convincing. It just didn’t seem possible that he didn’t have the same feelings that she conveyed for him.
“Well, I guess it doesn’t matter. I'm just not good enough for him,” she shrugged. She dried up her tears and then stood up to give me a hug. It wasn’t a long hug... just long enough to show her gratitude towards me for helping her feel better.
Suddenly the look of gratitude on her face changed into one of anger and spite. She looked at me up and down and for a second there I thought her head would explode or something.
“Is that my dress?” she asked angrily. I looked down at myself and realized that I was indeed wearing one of harmony’s dresses. I should have thought about that before I had come in here...
“Why in the world are you wearing that!” she shouted, “I got that for my birthday!”
Suddenly I felt my anger boil as well. I tried to keep calm but the feeling just didn’t want to leave me alone. The more she yelled, the more I kind of wanted to hit her.
“Shut up! I’ll wear whatever I want!” I yelled back.
“Not from my clothes you won’t!”
“Too late!” I said, getting angrier, “by the way, if mom could see some of the clothes that were in there, she’d be just as angry right now!”
“You went through my closet?!”
“How do you think I got the dress, you blonde!” I retorted.
“Why in the world would you even go through there?” she said, her anger still seething.
“Don’t blame me! It wasn’t my idea!” I spat.
“Then whose dumb idea was it, hmm?” she seethed.
“I had a friend over, okay? It was her brilliant idea!”
“Oh, I'm sorry- I didn’t realize you had any!” she retorted.
And that’s when I slapped her. My hand became numb, and the red spot on her face was throbbing maliciously. Suddenly my entire arm became numb and the cut that the cat had inflicted on me had also begun to hurt.
I ran from the room. My entire body hurt, like I was on fire. Had I really just slapped my sister? The one person who shared my exact blood and DNA?
I ran into the bathroom and stared into the mirror. I looked like a mess. My wonderful night with Matt would be entirely ruined now. My mood was gone and I washed my face in silence. Thinking about what I had done to my poor sister. In the state that she’s currently in, she’s probably crying right now.
Suddenly, there was a girl that appeared behind me. I screamed loudly, until a hand clasped over my mouth.
“Geez you scream loud,” Veronica giggled. I wiped my forehead in relief, glad that it wasn’t that demonic girl again.
“Hey, what’s wrong,” she asked softly, “you look awful...”
“Gee thanks...” I muttered, “I just got into a fight with my sister, that’s all...”
“Why? I thought the two of you were close?” she stated.
“It’s because I took her dre-,” I cut off. I gave her a dirty look, “that was your fault...”
“No way, you agreed to wear it,” she accused, “and plus, it looks better on you.”
“Yeah, but you suggested it,” I told her, still glaring at her spitefully.
“You still could have said no, but you didn’t, so do not blame me,” she spat.
I looked into her eyes, they looked angry. Like they were warning me to stay away or I would regret it.
“You know what, I think we shouldn’t be fighting,” I said slowly after a small period of silence, “we’re friends, friends don’t fight...”
The look in her eyes faded back into the bright eyes that I had come to know. She smiled at me, “of course... Friends don’t fight. Not ever.”
For a split second there was a strange glint in her eyes, In fact, it almost scared me. She was still smiling happily and I felt as if I should probably go back to Matt.
“I should probably go sit with Matt again, he’ll be wondering where I am,” I excused.
“Yeah I suppose so,” she said with a sad tone in her voice. I checked myself in the mirror again before quickly walking out of the bathroom. Not bothering to look back at Veronica, whom I could feel staring at me as I walked off.
I felt relieved as I entered the safety of Matt’s presence. I sat down, ignoring the music that was still playing on the stage.
“What took you so long?” he asked smiling at me.
“Yeah... about that, I got into a little fight with Harmony,” I mumbled, still ashamed that I had slapped her.
Matt looked surprised, “you had a fight?”
“Yeah... and I even h-” I stopped, afraid to tell him.
“No, keep going,” he demanded, wanting to hear what I was going to say.
“I- I may or may not have hit her...” I muttered, looking down at my lap.
“You did what?” He looked shocked.
“I hit her,” I said louder this time.
“Shh!” I heard someone behind us say loudly.
Matt looked behind his shoulder to glare at whoever it was that was interrupting us, he then grabbed my hand and dragged me down the aisle towards the exit.
“Where are we going?” I whispered, almost angrily.
“Outside,” he stated.
“Why?” I questioned.
“So we don’t get shushed again,” he explained. I didn’t say anything after that; I just let him drag me down the rest of the aisle until we were outside.
“Why would you hit your own sister?” he enquired, “that’s horrible!”
“I don’t know! I was angry, okay?” I rushed on.
“That’s so dumb! I don’t see why-” he stopped what he was about to say when he saw the tears in my eyes. They threatened to pour out of my eyes like a waterfall. I held them back, my bottom lip starting to quiver.
His expression softened and he wrapped me in a hug.
“I’m sorry. I know you didn’t mean to hit her...”
I didn’t say anything else, because if I did, then he might let go, and the moment would end. My thoughts immediately went over what Harmony had said, he likes someone else.
If I didn’t know better, I’d say it was me who he liked. I shook the thought out of my head because if I get carried away, like my sister did, then I’ll get hurt... and I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.
I slowly pushed myself away, not letting myself get too attached.
“Can we go home?” I asked quietly. He looked a little bit surprised, and... Was that hurt that was in his eyes? I couldn’t tell, there were too many emotions going on right now. Hate, anger, fear, and one-sided love... I just can’t handle this anymore.
He smiled thoughtfully, “Sure... let’s go.”
