21. Please Shut Your Mouth(Part 1)
"So tomorrow? Saturday night? Movie night? Shall I book the tickets?" Zach asks us as he settles down in the chair.
"Sure thing."
"I'm up for it."
"Pick a better movie this time."
"I asked for your opinion the last time I booked the tickets for a movie, but you just said you trust me which is exactly the thing you should not do," Zach insults Dawn back.
Dawn turns to the person beside her which is Kevin and pulls a face. "#BFFGoals? Damn relatable, huh?"
Kevin snickers, answering her with a fist bump and backs her up. "We're sorry for 'trusting' our best friend blindly, dear friend. But this time please inform us about the movie before you book the tickets."
"Yeah," I add along, "at least I don't want to waste my popcorn this time as I got so bored that I started throwing it at y'all for fun."
"For which we got thrown out by the usher there," Sophia reminds us but we only grin because it is quite normal for all of us.
"It gets even more funnier when we stole drinks and food from the snacks counter. Which was quite easy for us to do such deed," Dawn recounts the story.
"Guys, stop!" Mason groans.
That is when realisation drops on all of us. "Holy shit! You weren't there with us during that prank weren't you?!" Zach outbursts with excitement.
"Which is exactly why I want you to shut your mouth!"
"And this is the right time to recount that night again." Dawn taunts him.
Mason begs us not to tell the story again but like the friends he could 'trust' we go on with the flow.
"I will start because I was the first to initiate the plan at that time", Sophia gets excited to start the story, "like the good girl I am, I apologised him on our bad behaviour and flirted my way with him to distract him."
"Noooo...." Mason groans.
"Then Zach and I wanted to distract the two guys who were behind the food counter, so we started a fight." Kevin continues inspite of Mason's cries.
"Trapped in my girlfriend's charm, the usher was of no use so those food counter guys had to rush out of their places to break our fight," Zach smirks at Mason, enjoying his uncomfortableness.
"I know what happens next, so please don't finish it." Mason begs us again.
"So this was the chance to for me and Dawn to sneak behind the counter to steal almost every food item there, where they were stupid enough to leave doors of the snacks open," I turn to Mason and sickly smile at him drawling the words slowly, "Skittles, Doritos, Lays, Nachos, tried to take sodas as well, but we left it to the boys to get them."
"Stop it you guys!" Mason hunches into his chair."
"Aww, Mason, you wanna know what happened next?" Dawn raises her eyebrows in question for which Mason frantically shakes his head in a big fat no. "I'll take that as a solid yes!" Dawn continues as we enjoy Mason's pain. "One of those boys caught us and screamed 'thieves' at the top of his lungs which immediately triggered that usher guy and then he was onto us. But we planned it so well that they were quite late to catch us. With no one guarding the drinks section, Zach and Kevin went to steal the drink cans while Sophia went downstairs from the other way to start the car"
"It was great night!" I sigh in contentment.
"Indeedo!" Zach agrees.
Kevin turns to a brooding Mason. "And I wonder why you didn't come with us that day," he mocks him. Mason starts to answer but he cuts him off from his pathetic excuse, "oh, that's right, it's because he did come to the movie with us, but was on a date with some girl. He chose
"Gosh! That taught me an unforgettable lesson, alright?! Never turn down friends when they plan something. Never ever. It is always 'misters before sisters' and 'bros before hoes' — I get it. Now can we please stop talking about it. Pretty pleeeeease!
We tip our heads back in laughter but oblige to his words and stop torturing him further.
"Remember how we had to tip the security guard at the entrance to cover for us?" Kevin laughs still thinking of that prank again, "He guided them towards the backside of the theatre for us while we were only hiding behind that big 'Incredibles 2' banner at the entrance of the theatre."
"He is a good man. I wonder how he is now. Been a while since I spoke to him." Zach recollects.
"You are in touch with him?" Sophia asks.
"Nah. But I miss him. He helped us that night."
"It's been months since we went to the theatres. Why did we stop going anyways?" Mason wonders.
"Easy. We are now in the Netflix era. People are barely going to the movies nowadays." I answer.
"Hence the reason why we need to go to a movie tomorrow," Dawn tells us and we all agree.
All of us fall silent all of a sudden while the chatter continues around us.
Which reminds me.....
"Did Mr. Wilson come to the school today? He is never late to the class. What's taking him so long?" I think out loud for which I receive one word answers from my gang.
"Whatever, I just want this last class to end soon and kick off the weekend with me catching up on sleep," Mason mumbles the last words to himself and stares out of the window in boredom.
"You're still on for the sleepover at my house, right?" Sophia asks Dawn in confirmation and she gives her a thumbs up saying that it is still on.
"What sleepover?" I ask them.
"My parents are going out of town so I'm staying at Soph's house for the night." Dawn explains.
"Then I will join you girls and let's make it a girls night out," I invite myself to Dawn's house for which they immediate agree.
The boys blink. They blink at us again. Do it thrice. And then...
"It's been a while since we had a boys' night out. Only the dudes, the bros, so 8 at my place?" Mason addresses the boys.
"Consider me there. I'll bring the new level of 'Aliens Vs Zombies' that I bought recently." Zach suggests.
"And I'll bring the drinks. So it's set," Kevin and the boys nod at each other and then looks at us with a smug expression. "You're not the only ones who can plan sleepovers in just ten seconds," he snaps his fingers at us in a mocking way to which we barely react.
Ten minutes later and still our Chemistry teacher with a wig doesn't bless us with his appearance. I am not actually worried about him not coming, I rather not. Also, nobody is interested to listen to the last class of the week before they go and have the life of their time the next two days. I am only waiting for him because if we come to know that he won't be coming to the class today, we might as well leave the class a little early.
While too much involved into one of the candid conversations I always have with my squad, we are very much interrupted by a girl who suddenly appears near our desks out of nowhere. She is always known for her famous 'don't mess with me, bitch' face as her face always looks like she is ready for a challenge that is thrown at her, ready to prove that person is wrong and make him run for his dear life with that look. Her jet black hair, her electrifying sea green orbs and with kickass outfits, rocking with those knee length boots, Natasha Wilde is a girl that every boy cannot take their eyes off. They simply cannot resist without looking at her.
"Hey all! Hey, Emma!" She greets us with a wide smile, an action that I thought she is incapable of.
We all mumble our 'Hey's while we look at each other in confusion and suspicion.
"First thing's first, I just want to apologise for that incident which happened a less than a month ago, right here in this classroom," Natasha smiles at us sheepishly. "We reacted way too much, but we are protective of Jay. I think you guys understand where I'm coming from, right?" She asks, knowing all to well about us by now and we fervently nod sharing a smile with her.
"Anyways," she continues, "there is a party tomorrow night, at my house and all the six of you are invited. And before you guys say anything, I just want to let you know that I won't take a no for an answer. I simply won't, which leaves you only with one option," she smirks at us.
Astounded by this sudden affection towards all of us, we really don't know what to say. Even though she was being honest, we wanted to deny her offer because we simply don't want to attend a party in our lifetime.
Don't get us wrong. We are not at all socially impaired. We do have a few acquaintances here and there and often get invited to these parties that teenagers go batshit crazy about. We do 'exist' in other people's lives. We are not invisible to them.
But that summer party that was thrown in five months ago, to celebrate the end of another school year and to start summer holidays with a kickass party which was organised by one of Kevin's lacrosse's team mate and got hammered so bad that we ended up in jail for vandalising the government property and trespassing it, we decided that we should not be seen near alcohol. We also weren't able to come out of that hangover for days and had the worst projectile vomitare sessions and horrible headaches, we decided not to attend a party anymore.
Hehe..So we may be a little spoiled there.
But you really can't blame us. We only have a cup or two when we attend a party. The thing was, some assholes pulled quite a stupid but a brilliant prank(which I hate to admit it) by mixing alcohol in watermelon slices! We later came to know that the boys stole all the expensive vodka bottles from their father's precious cabinet, dug a few holes in the green fruit and stuffed four bottles of vodka in each of them. Four freaking bottles! They have prepared it a day before the party in advance since it takes time for that fruit to absorb the liquid and have cut them into slices for the lucky people to fetch them because who the hell can resist a sweet and juicy fruit like that in a summer?!
You see what they did there?! My gang is still wondering on how to top it off from that wickedly fantastic prank!
"We will come," Kevin answers for all of us as are a little busy still not being able to believe her invitation.
But Dawn doesn't hold herself back. "If this turns out to be some sick prank that you are planning on us, then I won't resist to strangle you with my bare hands."
All of us snap our heads towards her in shock. She kind of crossed a line there!
Natasha looks a bit offended but she genuinely smiles through it. "I might have considered that in the past but I'm not that evil. Also, I think we need to thank Emma for me being juvenile towards you. If it wasn't for her, then maybe I wouldn't be standing in front of you right now and give myself a chance to see that you are not actually bad. You guys are just like us. Being there for your friend."
Now can she stop dropping these bombshells on all of us?! It is even more tougher to recover than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
"Emma did what?" Zach asks on behalf of us.
"Yes," Natasha keeps her focus on me. "I finally took the step to break up with him. I always lacked the courage to break up with him, I knew that I had to but maybe I just needed a nudge? Anyways, you helped me with that and I don't think it wouldn't have been possible without you. So thank you so much, Emma. You are a gem." And then she leans forward to hug me while I sit there astonished. Before I recover from it and hug her back, she retracts. "See you all tomorrow!" And then she goes away back to her friends.
Followed by a two minutes of silence filled with a marvellous awkwardness to process the last ten minutes, Mason clears his throat. "What was that?"
"Apparently Emma just found a new best friend and didn't bother much to tell us about it," Dawn exclaims coldly.
"It's nothing like that," and then I tell them the little encounter I had with Natasha in the locker room, two days ago.
They stay silent for a minute and they seem like they are not content about it but they are not angry either.
"Well, let's put it behind us. She apologised and I'm sure Emma did the same thing for at least a hundred times as well," Sophia grins at me and continues, "what should we say about the party thing? She clearly is adamant for us to join her tomorrow."
"I don't know how I feel about it," I sigh.
"You guys go ahead, I won't be joining you anyway," Kevin declares.
"Don't be a party pooper, if we go down, you are going down with us as well," Zach slaps him on the back.
"Besides..." Mason drawls in slowly, "it is not like it is going to happen again."
"Wow, you are so desperate to get drunk, huh?" I tease him.
"I know that we vowed to never step our foots in a party once again, but...." Zach trails off.
"Then it's a yes for all of us?" Dawn questions and just like that, we all slowly agree to meet our impeccable doom once again.
______________
Bounce and bounce and bounce and bounce...
"Emma, stop jumping up and down on the bed. The springs of the mattress are going to come off." Sophia warns me.
I bounce up and down once again on the bed before falling on it with a soft thud. "What do you expect me to do if you have such a fluffy bed to sleep on?"
She ignores me and turns away to the mirror to resume her use with hair straightener while Dawn is busy texting someone in the phone with a silly smile plastered on her face. Must be Dylan....
"Besides," I smirk at Soph who looks at me through the mirror, "I bet you and your boyfriend always have a wonderful time doing stuff on this bed, huh?"
"Emma!" Sophia accidentally drops the straightener on the table in front of her and turns scarlet while Dawn and I laugh our hearts out.
"So you really do stuff on the bed? You didn't even tell us about it and here I thought you are the one who can never keep secrets within herself," Dawn joins me.
I continue, "Please tell me that you changed the bed sheets."
Sophia covers her face in her palms and grunt in shyness not knowing that she is humouring us all the way. "We are done with the jokes, Soph, you can stop now." Dawn tells her once she is done embarrassing our friend. She recovers and throws a murderous glare at the both of us but like always we shrug it off.
"So, I was just texting Dylan and he is saying that he cannot wait to meet me in the party," and then Dawn goes on fawning about him where I stop her in the mid way.
"Are you going to become a thing soon?"
"I don't really know, we didn't go out on another date but we are often texting each other and I'm pretty sure he likes me too. Like really really likes me."
"But what about you? Do you like him back?" Sophia asks.
Dawn squirms a bit in her place. "Maybe yes?"
I roll my eyes at her. "Are you even sure about your feelings?"
"Okay okay. If he asks me to be his girlfriend, then I will say yes. Jeez, don't pressurise me."
"Hey! Nobody pressurised you!" Soph and I shout in disagreement.
"I know," Dawn flops onto the bed beside me and hugs me from the side, "I think I might as well say yes if he asks me," she smiles dreamily.
"Did you hear that ladies and gentlemen?! Dawn Lockwood is soon going to be off the market!" Sophia calls out to nobody in particular and Dawn's face beams in glee.
"Which still leaves us with Emma," Soph wiggles her eyebrows while I scoff at her.
"What's wrong?" Dawn asks as I break myself from her embrace.
"I don't know why, but I kind of starting to dislike Jay," I think out loud.
"What?!" The girls shriek out loud.
"How is it even possible?"
"When did this happen?"
I wearily glance at their worried faces before continuing. "I have no idea why but I'm starting to question my affection towards him."
"What. Happened?" Sophia demands.
I take in a deep breath before I tell them. "He is kind of questioning your relationship with Zach. Saying crap like how you won't last long, how it is too good to be real that it is soon going to fall apart and stuff."
"That is downright outrageous. Who the hell does he think to judge someone he barely know." Dawn breathes out in fury.
"That's what I said! We bantered about it for a few minutes and I left it off, but I'm still irked by it."
"He is not wrong though."
Say what?!
We snap our heads in the split second at Soph who is looking at us with a neutral facial expression.
"What are you even talking about?"
"Are you both fighting?"
"No, we are not fighting. We are perfectly fine....for now." She mumbles.
I stand up from the bed to walk towards where Soph is sitting and crouch beside her. "What is it that you're not telling us?"
She gives me a small smile. "Sometimes....I think that I do- that I don't deserve Zach in my life," she takes in a sharp breath and resumes again, "He is literally the dream boy every girl on this planet dreams about. The perfect fictional boyfriend in real life every girl goes crazy for. He treats me like a queen, takes care of me, understands me, makes sure we barely bicker, he is so patient with me and sometimes I really pinch myself to make sure that it is actually true and not some fairy tail that every girl wishes for," her voice breaks out a little in the end.
"Soph..."
"I am afraid that one day...I am going to..wake up from this dream I am living. Where we are g- going to fa- fall apart. That something is going to take us to our...end, where we both have to reach to a full stop."
She takes a tissue from the vanity table and dabs it below her eyes while Dawn and I stay dumbfounded to say anything. So we decide to stay silent and let her continue.
"I've been dying to talk about this to someone from the past few months. I know that I sound clearly insane but I'm scared to death. My insecurities are shaking me up lately and I didn't even find the strength to talk about it with Zach, let alone you girls."
"You know...you should have really talked about this to us. We wouldn't have judged you, right?"
"How can you say that, Emma, when you were clearly being one of those persons who think we are perfectly alright a few minutes ago?" She snaps, letting out her bottled up emotions finally out, bursting like the froth after the champagne is popped. "Jay is right. We are too perfect to be real and I'm scared of the possible future and I really hope that we will survive through it." She stops to wipe the tears away from her eyes again. "Do you think my fears are irrational?"
"Absolutely not," I answer immediately. "Now I'm realising what he meant and I'm extremely sorry for not sensing it earlier. I think you are allowed to feel this way," I choose my words carefully.
Dawn follows. "And we don't know what it takes to be you. We've never been in such a perfect relationship to understand what it really looks like. But do you know what I think about you two?" Soph signals her to continue. "I think that whatever might happen in the future, the love which you both share— the colossal bond, the passion that you have between each other to stay together no matter what, is going to save you both from falling apart."
"It's going to be okay, you are going to be okay, Sophia. Besides, Zach is too head strong to leave you just like that," I wink at her and she lightens up.
"It's going to be okay," she repeats the words again and again and takes the both of us in a tight embrace. "I don't know what I would've done without you both. I love you so freaking much."
"More than Zach?" I ask her with a fake hope shimmering in my eyes.
"Hahahaha, you should know your limits."
I had to cut it into two parts. Really lengthy one.
