Chapter XXIII

Ignis carefully laid Angelica onto a bed. Now with her whole body paralyzed, she couldn't move at all, aside from her eyes and mouth. Alongside the numbness was a searing pain in her left shoulder where the arrow had pierced. Ignis cracked a potion over her wound, causing it to rapidly heal up. But her paralysis would have to wear off on its own.

Angelica sighed in frustration, thinking back on her battle. "Those two cowards." Everyone looked at her. "That was supposed to be a one-on-one fight."

"Never mind that," Noctis said. "How did they recognize you like that? You don't know them in any way, do you?"

"Of course not," she replied. "They only recognized me by clan."

"Clan?" Prompto echoed, ignorant to the ways of an assassin.

"Assassins are divided into clans, which are normally made up of one or two big families," the girl explained. "My mom told me a bit about it."

"Interesting," Ignis muttered in thought.

"So, it's basically a job you're born into," Gladio concluded.

"I have a question though," Prompto interrupted. "What happens if two people from two separate clans have kids of their own or something?"

"The assassins have very strict rules on who you can intermingle with, that's part of why my mom left, or so she said. But if that does occur, apparently the children are placed into whichever clan they share the most traits with."

"But that still makes you a Solani, right?" Iris asked.

Angelica attempted to shrug her shoulders, but forgot that they wouldn't comply due to the paralysis. "I guess so. I never knew my dad or what clan he was in. But according to those two back there, I'm definitely a Solani."

"How many clans are there?" Noctis asked this time.

"Counting mine..." Angelica took a moment to remember everything her mom had told her. "Ten? Twelve? Somewhere in that range. Their numbers had lessened over the years." Noctis slowly nodded in understanding.

"I believe I remember taking notes on the assassins," Jared suddenly spoke up, now flipping through his notebook.

"Do you know where their village is?" Angelica inquired.

Jared hummed in thought. "Information on them was scarce. But I believe their village, Secreta, was said to be hidden somewhere in Niflheim or Tenebrae."

(Secreta has kind of an odd pronunciation: seh-creh-tuh
Sorry if it sounds kinda weird, it was tough finding a word that fit and I spelled out the pronunciation as best I could.)

"That's helpful," Angelica sarcastically replied. "It's just difficult to imagine that other assassins are still out there. It was so long ago when my mom told me about her village, I thought it had all but vanished by now."

"My sincerest apologies I couldn't be of more help, Lady Angelica," Jared said.

"It's alright."

After a short while longer, nearly everyone was finished eating. Jared and Talcott left for their own room for the night. That's when Angelica began eyeing the extra bowl of stew that had been meant for her. Her stomach growled in hunger. She tried to move so she could get up and eat, but her body just wouldn't comply.

"Am I supposed to starve or what?"

Ignis stood, setting his own empty bowl aside. "Apologies, Angel, but I didn't know if you wanted anything, seeing as how you can't move at the moment."

Unable to turn her head away, her eyes darted to the side. "Well I am hungry."

Ignis brought her bowl over and sat on the edge of her bed. He reached down and slid an arm under her shoulders, pulling her up into a sitting position. Keeping one arm firmly around her, he set the bowl on her lap and took the spoon, shoveling the stew up and holding it to her mouth. Despite being embarrassed by the situation, Angelica kept her poker face as she opened her mouth.

Ignis slid the spoon into her mouth, letting her slurp up the stew. As soon as he retracted the utensil, she lightly chewed the bits of meat and vegetables before swallowing. The taste was very satisfying and caused a faint smile to tug at the girl's lips.

"The stew's delicious, Iris," Angelica complimented.

"Thanks," the brunette replied with a smile. "Glad you like it."

With Ignis continuing to feed the red-haired girl, Prompto took the opportunity to snap a picture. He had a goofy grin on his face the whole time. "Aww, look at Angel being adorable!"

The girl narrowed her eyes at him. "Shut up, Prompto. You're just lucky I can't move right now."

"Oh yeah?" he retorted in a teasing tone. "We all KNOW you, Angel. You wouldn't hurt any of us... would ya?"

She smirked ever so slightly. "Wait till I can move again and you'll find out."

"No more hollow threats," Ignis interrupted, nearly shoving the spoon into her mouth to silence her. "I'd rather you spend that energy chewing instead of spouting retorts."

Angelica gave in and quietly ate the rest of her stew. Once finished, Ignis carried the redhead out and followed Iris to the room next door that the two girls would be sharing. After laying the girl in her bed, the bespectacled man left the girls and returned to his room with his friends. Back in there, Ignis immediately noticed Prompto with his camera, a goofy grin on his face. Noctis was currently in the bathroom and Gladio was reading a book. Prompto looked up at the advisor.

"Iggy, you gotta see this! The look on Angel's face is priceless!"

Ignis walked over, leaning over the chair Prompto sat in. The gunman held up his camera, showing off his picture. The image showed Ignis in the process of feeding Angelica. It was the moment he had nearly shoved the spoon into her mouth. The expression on the girl's face was a mixture of annoyance and embarrassment. Ignis couldn't help but chuckle.

"Yes, that is quite a sight to behold. Definitely a mix of emotions you don't normally see on her."

"Wanna see the other?" Prompto flipped to the previous picture before Ignis could answer. It was the one of Angelica obediently eating the stew with a faint smile. "Never thought I'd see Angel looking so adorable. And look, even you're smiling in this one, Ignis."

"What are you implying, pray tell?" the advisor inquired, slightly offended by his comment.

Having closed his book, Gladiolus got up to take a look at the picture too. "Well you gotta admit, Angel is pretty cute, even with the attitude," he said, Ignis's question going unanswered. "Don't you agree, Iggy?" the shield lightly nudged the advisor with his elbow.

Ignis pushed up his glasses and replied, "Indeed. Angel is a lovely young lady."

"I guess so." Everyone looked at Noctis, who had just exited the bathroom and overheard bits of their conversation. "I've just never really looked at Angel like that though."

"Dude, you've already got a girl," Prompto pointed out. "Of course you don't have much of an opinion."

Noctis only shrugged. It wasn't long before everyone went to bed for the night. The following morning, Angelica awoke. She slowly sat up and stretched her arms. She froze midway though, realization hitting her.

"I can move!" she exclaimed, hopping out of bed. She moved her arms and legs around, even wiggled her toes. "The paralysis has left my system!"

Iris was jolted awake from the commotion of her roommate. She looked over at the redhead through half-lidded eyes. She tiredly smiled. "Angel, looks like you're all better."

Angelica smiled slightly. "Yep, and boy does it feel great to move on my own."

"Guess we should go see if the guys are up."

The two girls fixed themselves up before leaving and going to the room next door. Iris knocked on the door. It opened and they were met by Gladio. "Iris, and Angel. Looks like you got your mobility back." He stepped aside, letting them both in.

"So, the paralyzing effect wore off," Ignis said. "And you feel alright?"

The redhead nodded. "I feel fine. No lasting side effects, I assure you." She then fixed her gaze on the gunman in his chair, narrowing her eyes. "Prompto."

The tone of her voice caused a chill to run down his spine. The blond jumped to his feet, fearfully backing away from the approaching girl. "Y-You're not still thinking about last night, are you? I was totally joking."

His words didn't halt her advance. Prompto backed away and got behind Noctis, fearfully peeking around him. "Hey, don't drag me into this," the prince complained.

Noctis was quick to get out of the way, wanting no part of the possible quarrel. Prompto tried darting past Angelica in hopes of escaping, but she snatched his arm, swinging him around and back in front of her. In his confusion, Angelica lightly kicked him in the back, making him fall to the floor on his stomach. The girl was almost instantly on top of him, kneeling over him with one foot pinning his wrist. Prompto whimpered, unable to move. He braced himself for whatever she might do to him. She loomed over him, a devious grin on her lips.

Angelica suddenly burst into laughter. The gunman's eyes snapped open and he looked sideways up at her. "W-What's so funny?" he fearfully asked.

"Did you actually think I was gonna hurt you?" she replied, quieting her laughter. "Prompto, you're the one who confirmed that I'd never attack you guys, remember?"

"Of course I remember!" he pouted, upset by her trick. She stood, letting him sit up. "But you scared me for a minute there! You can be super scary intimidating, y'know! Why'd you do that?!"

"Because it's amusing to see you cowering like a baby." She ruffled his messy hair like a child. "Besides, everyone knew I was kidding."

"I didn't," Iris admitted sheepishly.

Noctis figured it could go either way, but Ignis and Gladio both knew it was fake from the beginning. "You're all so cruel!" Prompto whined.

"Chill, Prompto," Noctis calmly told him. "It was just a joke."

Prompto continued to pout like a child all morning. After breakfast with Talcott and Jared, they all found themselves down in the lobby of the hotel, where Noctis had another headache. It was another showing the meteor. Ignis suggested going to the outlook to get a better look at the Disc. But they all were wondering the same thing - just what was going on?
