Chapter XIV

This chapter is a bit sloppy and I'm very sorry about that. I'm terrible at recreating battle scenes and rushed through certain parts rather quickly. Just bear with me, guys, I did my best to summarize scenes from the movie here. Another thing, I omitted the part with Ravus putting the ring on, just felt like changing that up. Again, sorry for my sloppiness.

It had begun. The peace signing became a huge battle that turned Insomnia into a war zone. Imperial soldiers had been unleashed upon the city. And to make matters worse, a portion of the Kingsglaive had turned on Regis. Even now, citizens were fleeing the city while the fighting in and around the Citadel worsened. Angelica had the last of a group of turncoats kneeling before her. His body was bloody and bruised. The girl stood over him with the coldest of glares.

"This is what happens to people who turn on King Regis." In one swift motion, she took his head and twisted it to the side, snapping his neck. "Filthy traitor," she muttered, watching his corpse collapse alongside the others.

She then sprinted away, heading toward the meeting room where the ceremony was held, and where the fighting began. Valerie was sure to be there alongside the king, Clarus, and the rest of the council. Regis himself had assigned her to be there while Angelica had to keep to her own duties, which placed her far away from the action.

She mentally cursed at how long it was taking her to reach the king and her mother. But when she finally made it, a battle was still going on. The council members were all but corpses littering the floor alongside magiteks and imperial troops. The only ones still fighting were Regis, Clarus, Valerie, and Supreme Commander Glauca.

At the moment of Angelica's arrival, Clarus was flung against the wall by Glauca and impaled by his own sword. "Clarus!" Regis and Valerie both cried before clashing with the commander again.

Valerie suddenly noticed her daughter in the entrance, her daggers in hand as she watched the fight. "Angel! Stay back!"

"But I can help if-"

"No you can't!" Valerie yelled, cutting off the girl. "He's too strong!"

Regis was knocked off balance by Glauca when Valerie intervened. Despite her skills in combat, her dagger couldn't pierce the armor the commander wore. Valerie was already tiring, but she kept fighting to protect her king. Angelica ignored her mother's words and charged in to aid them. She attempted to strike at Glauca from behind while he clashed with Valerie, but the man heard her coming and twisted around, knocking her back with one swing of his arm.

The girl was a bit dazed from the strength behind the blow and stumbled back, and while she was trying to regain her focus, Glauca readied his blade. He thrusted his sword toward her, but just before it could strike her, someone jumped in front of her. It seemed like everything slowed down in that instant. Valerie had a look of terror on her face as she gazed at her daughter. Angelica watched with wide eyes as Glauca's sword pierced through the woman's stomach.

Valerie let out a choked gasp and glanced down at the blade going through her body. Her dagger clattered to the floor. The commander swiftly yanked his blade free, leaving a gaping, bleeding wound in its place. Angelica's eyes became wet with tears. Valerie fell to her knees, reaching her hand out toward her daughter. The girl instantly took her hand and kneeled in front of her. In shock, Angelica was unable to utter a word.

"A-Angel..." Valerie breathed out, blood beginning to pool on the floor around her. "Get away... G-Go..."

She then collapsed, joining the bodies of her allies. "MOOOOM!" Angelica finally screeched, tears streaming down her face.

At that moment, she snapped. Pure rage consumed her heart and fueled her actions. In the blink of an eye, Angelica leapt up over her mother, clashing with the commander. Her attacks were swift and relentless, showing no restraint or care for her own safety. But Glauca's armor kept him protected and his power still surpassed the girl's. He managed to knock her to the floor and pinned her by placing his foot on her stomach. It was just enough pressure to keep her in place. But she furiously struggled like a feral sabertusk under him.

"I'll kill you!" she shouted. "Whatever happens, I'll make sure you die! You'll suffer in every way possible! I swear it!"

He raised his sword, ready to strike her down. But suddenly, a bolt of lightning shot from Regis's hand, knocking the commander into the wall. Angelica was free and snatched up her mother's dagger. Regis was quick to grab her arm, pulling her away as she angrily locked her gaze on the armored man. At that moment, Nyx and Lunafreya entered the room and Nyx joined the fray. Angelica recognized the Glaive right away as one of the best.

Nyx fought Glauca with the best of his abilities before finally being forced to flee. They took a secret passage out while struggling to keep Angelica from rushing back. But once again, Glauca came after them. Regis passed the Ring of the Lucii to Lunafreya before creating a barrier between himself and the retinue. The king knew his time was up and looked to them, urging them to go.

"Nyx, get Lunafreya out of the city," he commanded. He then looked to the redhead with one final order. "Angelica, go find my son. Make sure he is safe. I'm leaving you with this final task."

He clashed once more with the enemy who'd caught up, but in the next instant, Regis was stabbed through with Glauca's sword. As much as Angelica's fury rose, she managed to contain it enough to think rationally. She fled with the two until they were far enough away. Angelica stopped and turned back, knowing Glauca would continue to pursue them.

"Go," she said to Nyx and Lunafreya.

"Can't do that," Nyx argued, his own mixture of anger and sorrow laced in his voice. "King's orders. You were given a direct command from His Majesty. Besides, it's my duty to protect the princess, not yours."

"But I have to avenge them - Regis, my mother, everyone."

"I understand your loss," Lunafreya said, placing a comforting hand against her arm. "But vengeance will lead to your own demise as well."

Nyx nodded in agreement. "Both of you go, get out of here." Before the girl could protest, Nyx placed a hand on her shoulder. "Listen, miss, I promise you that I won't let their deaths be in vain. Just go, the king gave you an order."

Angelica was going through an internal battle. She wanted revenge, but she also wanted to fulfill the king's dying request. She reluctantly nodded, leaving Nyx behind and soon parting with Lunafreya as well. Soon enough, Angelica was in her house, snatching up her little backpack of necessities. But she also took a moment to grieve.

She held her mother's dagger in her hand, crying as she stared down at it. She truly wished that it was all a bad dream and that she would wake up at any moment. But she knew it was all real. And while she trusted Nyx to follow through with his promise, she wanted to take matters into her own hands. Her anger bubbled up inside her again. I'll leave this fight to Nyx. But once I fulfill my duty, I'm taking the fight straight to the source. I'll get rid of every Niff in power. They will all pay.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a nearby explosion that rumbled the whole building. She jerked her head up to see the building next to her home erupting into flame with another explosion following. Unfortionately, Angelica was standing too close to the window, allowing shrapnel to hit her. Tiny shards of glass and metal lodged into the skin of her right arm, shoulder, and the right side of her face. She screamed in pain as a shard even went into the far corner of her right eye, rendering that eye useless for the time being.

Blood trickled down her skin from the wounds, but she didn't have time to treat them. She had to leave Insomnia as quickly as possible. She quickly salvaged bandages from the bathroom and sloppily wrapped up her injuries, leaving the shrapnel lodged in her flesh. She could tolerate the stinging pain for now, it would have to wait. Her entire right arm and part of her face were covered in bandages, and she only had her left eye to see out of.

She packed her mother's dagger in with her other things and left. She managed to snag a car to get out of the city. The Wall was gone, it was dark, and daemons were everywhere, making it difficult to navigate through them. If she had the time, Angelica would've gladly stopped to slaughter the monsters of darkness. But she needed to catch up to Noctis before he got too far ahead of her. Filled with determination, the girl was eager to find him so she could move on to her next plan - taking down the empire.

(By the way, this is what Valerie's dagger looks like. Just thought I'd give you an image of it because it's going to hold a lot of sentimental value from now on)
