02. The Archeologists

Prompt: Old

“Faster, guys! We gotta finish this within next two days. Come on buckle up!” I walked towards the left of the cave announcing my thoughts.

I went and bent down to take a closer look at the specimen I’ve been working on since last week. We’ve been on this excavation since eight days now.

I grabbed my brush and started cleaning the dirt and debris. As I was somewhere in between of scraping the unnecessary remains away, a ray of light hit me right into my eyes. I looked in the respective direction and noticed that it was coming from somewhere inside the cave.

I stood up and walked towards the light. I walked for good five to six minutes deep inside the cave and finally when I neared the source of light, I noticed that it was some type of stone having the form of an orb, reflecting the Sunlight coming through an opening.

I ran back out and brought my torch and the other necessary equipment. And started my handiwork, feeling a rush of excitement.

I scraped the already rough wall. Soon as the stone became more clearer I saw that it was attached to something. Soon I dug it out. It was a small metal box and the stone was attached to the front of the box. But what I didn’t noticed was that the wall was weak and that I’ve applied a little too much pressure while pulling the box out. The stones started to fall, the wall started to break.

I immediately backed away towards the save side, soon enough the whole wall was lying down on the ground as countless pieces of stones and dust. Hearing the noise, my team rushed towards me.

“What happened Alex? Are you alright?” My team mate and best friend Joshua asked me.

“Yeah, no. It’s just that I was working on this box and as I got this box out, the wall fell.” I explained him and to my other team members.

As soon as the dust cleared, we all stepped forward to see what have been revealed.

But what we all came across was unbelievable. It was a room. There were metal chains, handcuffs and other old age equipment that seemed to be used for holding someone captive.

Several different kind of furniture made of stone. Tables, chairs, sculptures and statues all were made of stone. Then we noticed that there were some symbols and text written in an unknown language too.

We all were watching this secret room in awe, my friend Joshua came up to me and spoke. “Wow, Alex! Now this is what we call a great discovery.”

“Thanks, dude.” I replied. “Honestly, I had no idea that I’ll discover something like this.”

“Yeah, about that box you’ve found. Where is it?” He asked.

“Here.” I handed him the box and he studied it for a moment.

“What do you think will be inside of it?” I asked him.

“No idea. But if only we could somehow break this lock…” He said and hit the hammer on the box and due to being very old it’s rusted metal broke up and it revealed an old key.

“Wow. Look at the carvings on it. Isn’t it beautif-”

“Hey, Alex! Look what I’ve found.” Someone from our team shouted so Joshua and I walked up to them.

It was a small 36x30 metal door they found. “I tried to open it but it’s locked.” The guy spoke.

“And if you guy’s haven’t noticed this place seems to belong to some kind of bandit. See all these symbols, these rough maps carved into the walls, these skull signs, all the other evidences proves it clearly.” Riley, member of my team explained. We all agreed to her.

“Look, there’s a key hole in it.” Joshua pointed.

“And I’ve found this key. Maybe it could work.” I suggested and earned four head nods from the members of my excavation team.

As soon as I inserted the key and rotated it, a loud click was heard, the  door unlocked and screech opened. As we all crawled inside, a strong odour hit us. We covered our noses but soon realized that this stink was coming from the several dead bodies lying in the room, some skeletons and some still having flesh on them?

How is it possible? If this place has been closed for ages as it occurs, then how are these bodies not decomposed yet?

“This is impossible!” Riley exclaimed.

“Exactly.” Lilly jumped into the conversation.

“Wait, guys. Something is wrong here. I think we weren’t supposed to be here. We should go, call the police and the authorities first.” I suggested.

“Yes, none of you should be here!” An unknown person was standing in a doorway that we didn’t noticed was there, holding a chain saw.

We all were way too much shocked to even move. None of us knew what to do, which way to go because soon there walked two more people holding the same kind of weapons.

We are only a team of some ordinary archeologists following our passion to discover the lost. Never in our wildest nightmares any of us had thought that our love for ancients and old could bring us to this day.
