A blood-curling scream filled the air and Killia widened her eyes. She looked at one of the guard towers. It was empty, but the lamp was still there. Killia quickly climbed the ladder to the tower and found her batchmate on the ground. There was a large bite on the fallen recruit's neck. There wasn't much bleeding, but her friend was frothing at the mouth. Her lessons back in the training camp allowed her to come to a conclusion.
Spider.
Killia heard a hiss behind her and she withdrew her bow. She spotted eight blood-red eyes fixed on her. She aimed the bow at the spider and squinted, hoping to take it down in one shot. She released, the arrow taking off with a small breeze of air blowing at Killia's face. She looked up and saw the spider, on the ground, the arrow stuck in it's head. It hissed one more time before going limp. Killia faced her fallen friend. She crouched next to his body and sighed.
"Rest now, my friend."
Killia leaped off the tower, meeting her brother, who had probably heard the scream and had come to investigate.
Kei asked, "What happened? I heard a scream."
Killia explained, "Spider. He's down."
Kei gasped and hung his head. He muttered, "He was a good friend."
She patted his shoulder to comfort him, and squeezed. His hand went over hers. After a moment she let go, and went back to her duty.
-
"Congratulations, cadets. You managed to protect the village no matter what the cost."
Jason praised the surviving cadets in the village. They were gathered around him, in their gear looking tired as fuck. They stayed through the night, scaring off creatures and fighting any that dared close. Some of them were bandaged up due to close scuffles with creatures.
Kei spoke up, his voice filled with sorrow, "Sanchez got bitten. His family will be so sad. He told me he had sisters and a girlfriend waiting for him back at home... He didn't even graduate."
Jason smiled and laid a hand on Kei's shoulder and said, "Yes, but I'm sure he wants all of you to graduate. We've informed his family already. They ask to have him buried at their village, so he could be with them. I'm sure he's happy."
Kei nodded slowly. The rest reached out to him and offered him comfort in the form of reassuring pats and smiles. Killia stayed put, but kept her eyes on her brother. Perhaps she could talk to him privately later.
Jason smiled, and said, "Alright, gather your horses. We're going to the base. Your rooms and uniforms are prepared. We have no time to lose. The commandant wants to see you."
The newly made soldiers nodded and saluted him.
-
"So, you all passed?"
The commandant asked, captain Ellis and lieutenant Probst on either side of him.
The recruits echoed, "Yes, sir."
Sky looked at Killia and Kei, having recognized them and he said, "Alright..."
He stood from his desk and smiled, exclaiming, "Welcome to the Southern Military!"
-
Captain Ellis paced round the new graduates, holding a list of squads.
He barked as he pointed, "You will all still go through some sort of a probation period before you are put under shifts by yourselves or can rank up. Johnson, Swift, Clark, for now you'll be under Petrov. Drew, uh, the male one, and Smith, you're under Foster. Williams, Brown, Hardy, you're all under Aceti."
He made eye contact with Killia, "Last Drew, you're under me."
Seto, Jerome and Martin were already waiting, and Ty dismissed them to go to their supervisors. Killia remained, not looking back at her brother who nervously stared after her as he left to Seto's side. Ty started walking away, and Killia picked up her belongings and hurried to keep up.
They walked into a section of the base that was separated from the main hall. Ty led her up several floors until he came across a door. He stopped and opened it up, Killia close behind.
As the door opened, the chatter behind it stopped, and Killia found three women sat on their beds. The rooms looked alright. Two bunk beds on either sides, with desks for each. There were two wardrobes at the foot of each bunk bed, and one of them was open to reveal a chest below.
A half of the opened wardrobe was empty, the other being filled with uniforms and various clothes. Polished boots lined the side of the door, and capes and towels lay draped over the bed frames. The three women were in their off-duty outfits, but they still stood as soon as they saw their captain.
They saluted and greeted him, and Ty greeted them back nonchalantly. He gestured for Killia to go inside and spoke, "This is Drew. She is your new roommate. I hope you help her get used to the place, and treat her well."
The women nodded with a resounding, "Yes, sir!"
Ty nodded in satisfaction and turned to Killia. The girl felt a little off. Something about her captain was bugging her off a little. Something about him was different, and her brain was telling her to be careful for some reason. At the same time, she felt drawn to him, to obey him.
She resisted those urges and listened to his next orders.
"You just got back from your assessment, so today will be an off-day for you. However, I expect you to be at the practice hall early tomorrow morning for your first duties. Am I clear?"
"Yes, sir."
He gestured to the women inside, "The girls will answer any of your questions. Have a good rest, Drew."
"Thank you, sir. You too."
Ty surveyed the room with one sweeping glance, before leaving. As soon as the door shut, the women dropped to their beds.
One blonde sitting on the right bottom bunk waved and greeted, "Hey! I'm Elicia. Your bunk is on top of mine."
She gestured to the wardrobe, "We cleared out Ashley's belongings already, so feel free to put anything inside. One compartment of the chest is for you as well."
Another girl seated on the opposite bunk's top bunk said, "The desk's all yours. Elicia doesn't study for shit, but gets good marks on theory tests."
The girl below her with red hair grinned and said softly, "That's Poppy. I'm Gloria. What's your name?"
Killia looked at her new roommates and wondered where her brother was, and who he was with, "Killia."
-
Ty burst into Sky's office. The commandant was unfazed and continued looking at documents at his desk.
He grunted, "There's this thing called 'knocking'. Does wonders, you should try it."
Ty scowled at him, "Why did you shove Drew onto me? You know I have a lot of shit on my plate."
Sky looked up from his papers and explained, "I wanted to see if she would crack under someone with such a high position."
The brunet became even more angrier, "So why didn't you take her yourself!?"
Sky clenched his papers tightly to prevent him from breaking the nearest pencil. He seethed through his teeth, "I, too, have a lot on my plate. Especially since I'm commandant. Someone has to run this goddamn place."
Ty stalked closer and pointed an accusing finger at Sky, who narrowed his eyes at that, "Pulling the rank card is the lowest of the low, Adam. You know that."
Sky sneered, placing his documents down and folding his arms, "Why are you getting so pissy? Can't handle a girl?"
"Why do you have to make things so fucking difficult?!"
That was something he had expected Ty to say, but Sky wasn't prepared for the slam on his desk. He was certainly not prepared for his wooden desk to be dented by the sheer force of the slam, and to get screamed at right at his face.
He also didn't expect to see deep purple eyes with reptile-like slits staring down at him with ferocity.
"Ty?"
It was like someone had flipped a switch within him. In a blink, the purple eyes were gone and Sky found himself staring at regular hazels. Ty stepped back, struggling a little to get his nails from the wood. He was panting heavily, and he looked behind him as if he was expecting to see something there.
Sky called again, "Ty?"
The captain had his fingers in his mouth, feeling around for... Something. Sky watched his captain fumble around in distress before he finally shouted.
"Ty!"
The man stared at him. He was dangerously close to the door. As soon as Ty reached for the knob, Sky got to his feet and reached out for him, shouting.
"No!"
The door knob burst into flames. Ty reared back and stared at Sky.
"What the fuck!?"
-
"So... You told him everything despite me explicitly telling you not to."
Sky looked sheepishly at Herobrine, who was seated on a stump, glaring at him.
"And you brought him to me, because he asked you to."
Next to Sky was Ty, who stared at the man on the stump like he was a god. His eyes were wide and his hands were clasped together nervously. Herobrine thought he looked like he was about to meet his favorite idol.
Herobrine growled disapprovingly, "You're damn lucky I know this kid."
Almost immediately his posture and expression changed as he looked at Ty. He smiled and walked towards him, earning a shocked look from Sky.
Herobrine spoke softly, as if regarding a son, "Hey, kid. Been quite a while. Took after me and joined the military, huh?"
Ty looked shy, and Sky was dumbfounded.
"Yeah, I-I guess..."
Holy fuck, a stutter from Ty?
What the fuck did Herobrine do to him?
"I'm sorry for being rude but, how the fuck did the two of you meet?"
Herobrine looked at Ty and tilted his head towards the commandant, "Have you told him yet?"
Ty shook his head, "No, when he told me about you, I just asked to see you again."
"Do you want to tell him? Or do you want me to do it?"
Ty was quiet for a few moments before he muttered, "Can I just... Show him?"
Herobrine took a step back and gestured for him to do so, "If you want to."
Ty looked up and made eye contact with his friend and commandant. Sky had never seen his captain look so scared, so he offered him a comforting smile. Ty looked away and stood straight, and the other two men watched as he was enveloped in black smoke.
As the black smoke faded, Sky was faced with a much more taller, and broader captain. Sky noticed that the reptilian purple eyes were back, but they were relaxed and not fierce. Sky then stepped back as two hulking black shapes moved from Ty's back. They spread wide, and it took Sky a moment to realize they were wings.
The scales were an ashy gray, and they glistened under the moonlight. The wing membrane was black, and when they stretched the light of the sky could pass through the paper-thin skin. They were of an impressive wingspan, Herobrine took several steps back to let him stretch.
Sky looked at the ground and gasped when he saw a thick heavy tail laying at Ty's feet. The scales were black instead, with a glossy sheen to it. The spikes moving down the tail were the same color as the scales on Ty's wings. It moved when Sky fixed his gaze on it, sliding behind Ty shyly.
Sky wanted to look back up at Ty to speak, but were distracted by his hands. His skin remained scaleless, but they went from a slight tan to a black. The black only reached up to his wrist, and Sky paled at Ty's fingers. On his fingers were long, sharp nails, just like claws.
He looked back at Ty, and simply said, "Holy fuck."
Herobrine chuckled from where he was, as Ty spoke, "Is that all you have to say?"
Sky noticed two little canines poking underneath Ty's upper lip. A quick glance at Herobrine laughing made him realize that Herobrine had sharper and longer ones. He wondered what does that make him?
He stuttered, "I-I just... I don't have anything to say."
Herobrine spoke finally, and Sky avoided looking at his fangs, "But you have questions."
Ty looked at him expectantly, and he watched those magnificent wings settle against his back, relaxed. Sky started, "Well... How long?"
"I've been like this way before I met you."
"Uh... How?"
Ty did not meet his eyes, "I was taken from the orphanage I grew up at. Kidnapped, not adopted. A group of us were."
Sky looked at him curiously. He knew Ty was an orphan, but he didn't know he was kidnapped. He assumed Ty just left when he was too old and enlisted in the military.
Ty continued, "We were brought to this facility. It was awful. I lived there for a few years. The others I was taken with were killed. Everyday they made me do something or take something."
He narrowed his eyes, "They injected me full of this... This weird purple liquid everyday, and made me do task after task so they would collect data. The liquid contained DNA of an enderdragon."
Sky balked, "Where did they get that?"
The captain shrugged and said, "I don't know. I don't want to know. Eventually the DNA kicked in and..."
He gestured to his wings and tail. Sky took a moment to take the story in. He noticed Herobrine standing there, and asked, "So how did the two of you meet?"
Ty let the other answer this one, "They caught me. Wanted to extract some DNA from me, hoping to create someone like me."
He narrowed his eyes and said lowly, "I escaped, and left a burning facility behind me."
Before Sky could react, Ty added, "We met when he was escaping. He was unlocking all the cages and I followed him out."
Herobrine's threatening expression dropped as he smiled at Ty, "Followed me out and everywhere after that. Had no where to go, and didn't know the first thing on how to survive."
"So you taught him?"
"Everything I knew. I brought him to places where he could live peacefully, and eventually he left. It was too dangerous to follow me anyways. I didn't know he joined the military though."
He turned to Ty, "What's your rank?"
Ty answered smoothly, "Captain."
Herobrine's eyes widened and he grinned, smacking Ty on the shoulder, "A fucking captain of all things?" He looked at Sky, "No wonder your base hasn't burnt down, this man has been keeping it up for you!"
Sky frowned as Herobrine and his own captain laughed at him.
