Apricot Jam

This is part 1 of a four part poem, all following the relationship between Margot and Kira. If sex offends you, I don't know why you're reading my poetry.

I.  Apricot Jam

Margot thought apricot tasted sweet,
But then she tasted Kira.
It was just a taste, hesitant, one soft press
Of tongue to sweat-slick skin: a moment.
Only a moment- but it was enough
She felt Kira tremble, and she did not

Stand up again.

She licked, and licked, and
It was as sweet at the vanilla custard

She used to buy on the way home from school
She sucked, and remembered
Sucking the nectar out of wild honeysuckles
That grew in the woods behind her shed
Then, because it was not yet enough,

Margot gorged

Kira panted like a dog after a run

And leaked honey like a honeycomb

Crushed between your fist.

Kira cursed and then she prayed
But she prayed to the kneeling girl
Lost between her legs, the legs
That were tensed and shivering.
Margot felt the goosebumps
Under her palms and smiled.

Then she lost control of time
It seemed to stretch itself thin
As nectarine skin. Minutes melted

Over their forms, coating them
In the stickiness of spun sugar
Dissolving on a child's tongue.
Seconds slid down the empty

Space between Kira's breasts,
Following her sweat slowly, surely,
Like molasses trickling over the edge
Of an overfull spoon.

Margot lost more than time, then.

Margot lost her mind for a little while.
Kira blinded her. Kira filled her nose and
Her mouth and her hands, filled all of her,
And she began to understand what her

Mother meant when she talked about religion.
She felt her knees growing stiff and red
As they pressed into the cold hardwood floor

Beneath her. She didn't care.
She had knelt on raw grits, once,
And several times in pews on rainy Sundays

This was the kneeling that suited her best
This was the kneeling she would suffer for

Kira seemed to suffer, too.
She shook like a frightened child

Against Margot's flushed face.
Her chest heaved like she'd just

Finished a sprint in the heat, and
She dripped sweat and honey
All over the supplicant at her feet.
One of her small brown hands was
Shoved into her mouth to choke her music.
The other pulled hard At Margot's
Dark hair, twisting the strands
Around and around her wrist in a
Pale imitation of eternity.

But eternity was not theirs.
They did not own it. And so their

Infinity shattered the second Kira did,
Exploding into fragments of light

And sound. Margot opened her eyes.
The first thing she saw was Kira
Fallen to her knees. Their foreheads
Almost touched. Margot licked her lips.
Kira touched them, almost questioningly.
Something alien hung in the air between
Them as sanity returned and they
Realized what they had just done

"I love you," Margot wanted to say

But Kira's face was unreadable and she
Was not that brave. So instead she said
"I think your brother is home."

And he was. They heard his car
Pull into the driveway.
