Truth or Dare

Squatting with Lucifer to my left and Michael to my right is certainly not what I had expected when I had prematurely died while having a fancy dinner with my girlfriend to celebrate our hundredth day anniversary. Yet, here I am, all by myself, playing a game of truth or dare with the top dogs of hell and heaven, respectively.

"Daniel, just pick one, would you?" I hear a sultry voice whisper next to my left ear, and I am instantly pulled out of my reprieve.

My eyes lock with cold blue ones; they are a little too close for comfort. I lean away and lower my gaze. It's the best I can come up with to stop myself from forgetting that I am indeed a straight man and making a fool of myself. "Would you kindly repeat the terms, Sir?" I request.

No, I didn't need to hear it again. I was pretty clear on what was expected of me. I was merely trying to buy time, especially since my soul would have to bear the consequences of my choice eternally.

"Mick, you promised to deliver a smart one. Since when are you the one who lies and cheats, hum?" Lucifer asks, abandoning my personal space and entering Michael's.

Nothing betrays how the angel might be feeling at the close proximity to his mortal enemy. The man dressed impeccably in white ignores the question and fixes me with a blank glaze.

"Your deeds in the mortal realm have rendered the scale of justice balanced. To determine which side gets to take you, we need you to pick either one: tell the truth, or do a dare." The angel says matter-of-factly.

"Isn't this a little too childish? I mean, it's not a frat party. This is my soul we are talking about, you know?" I try to worm my way out of the situation. Alas, my observation gets me nothing but a glare and a condescending chuckle.

"He has guts, Mick, I give you that." The devil smirks. "Not many have witnessed your glare, have they? I am almost tempted to give him up without a fight."

"Shut up, Lucy! Don't joke around." The said heated glare shifts to the man on my left, who surprisingly seems to glow in its heat, thriving like a blossom bathed in sunlight.

A loud, open laugh revibrates through the air creating ripples in the quiet, serene surroundings. But it's not the laugh that surprises me; it's the mischievous yet soft smile that tugs at the corner of the angel's lips that leaves me stumped.

"Daniel, I haven't seen my brother in a while. Cases like yours are too few and too far apart. Choose wisely." The angel suggests without looking away from the man in black.

My confusion dies a quick death. I know what they need.

"Dare, I pick dare." I announce and wait to be sent far away.
