The Curse
"Seriously, Chocolate, what the hell's wrong with you!?"
My brother's frustrated voice was music to my ears. Finally, the day had come when our beloved family cat, which for some mysterious reason seemed to only favor Josh, my older brother, was treating him with the same kindness she did the rest of us.
"Josh, stop wasting your time with the cat and help me take the turkey out, will you? They will be here any moment." My mother yelled back, dampening my cheerful mood.
I had found out very recently that magic was real, and spells actually did work; at least, mine had.
Almost sixty minutes ago, while I was rewatching Harry Potter on the telly, pretending to be a witch, I had pointed my pen at Chocolate before whispering, 'im-PEER-ee-oh,'
The very next second, the cat had stopped licking her paw and was now staring at me unblinking.
I had found it more than strange, nonetheless, dismissing Chocolate's actions, I had decided to keep in character and commanded the cat to sit on my lap, waiting to be cuddled.
Imagine my surprise when the usually feisty animal had shed its pride and made itself comfortable in my lap before proceeding to look up at me bashfully.
Wondering if Chocolate's actions had anything to do with the (unforgivable) Imperius Curse that made the victim fall under complete control of the caster, I commanded my kitty to lick my face and then my toes.
Soon, I was confident that the spell had worked, and to test my theory on another subject, I barged inside Josh's room, and pointing my pen at him, muttered 'im-PEER-ee-oh' under my breath while thinking hard: kneel before me, your lord and master.
Josh looked at me as if I had finally lost all my brain cells; glaring, he had promptly thrown me out of his territory.
Feeling disappointed, I had resumed the Harry Potter marathon when barely minutes in, an idea struck.
I was not sure how long I had, so I got to work immediately, making Chocolate do everything Josh disliked, (and that we had to put up with daily) like distracting him from doing his homework to hissing at him.
As Josh reprimanded her repeatedly and his temper rose, the irritation within me for always getting the shorter end of the stick when it came to receiving the cat's affection subsided.
The bell rang a moment later, and Chocolate mewled, making me catch her steel-grey orbs; they seemed more alert than they were seconds ago.
"Welcome!"
My father's deep gruff voice drifted over to me just as Chocolate turned her head away from me and rushed to Josh's side, purring as if wanting to butter him up and seek forgiveness for her recent actions.
Just like that, I knew my lucky streak had ended.
I couldn't complain, though; it was good while it lasted.
