Fated to Meet

Two young men, Zi and Xing, had almost nothing in common except the facts that both were professional killers before 'The extermination', and that both were under the impression that they were the last human on Earth.

With the apocalypse that had rid Earth of every single human except him, or so Zi thought, the bounty hunter had embraced the hermit life. Along the way, he had reluctantly adopted a stray pup and had unexpectedly gotten attached to it as well.

Xing, on the other hand, had raided every Gucci store in his vicinity- apocalypse or not, one must always look their best- and decided to travel the world, spending his days pretending to be a sommelier.

"Stop, you stupid mutt!" Zi yelled, chasing the tiny golden retriever who had dashed into the multi-storied mall. He collided head-on with Xing, who had wandered there on a sommeliering quest.

Xing, ecstatic to have come across a human in forever, immediately thrust his hand out to help the other up. With a smile that could blind the sun, he chirped, "I thought I was the lone survivor. I am Xing. What do you go by?"

Zi sighed and reluctantly accepted the offered hand, "Thanks, Sir." He muttered. Not wanting anyone to cramp his style, of which he had none, he barked, "Mutt! You ungrateful bastard!" right in Xing's face, hoping that his crude behavior and unkempt visage would make the latter leave.
Unperturbed, Xing continued to smile sweetly, "If you tell me what it looks like, I can help you find it."

Acting rude hadn't worked. Zi changed his approach, "I can't possibly encroach upon your time."

Xing laughed, "Brother, time is the one thing I don't lack. Moreover, I think we were fated to meet. Please, let me help."

'Fated, my ass!' Zi muttered under his breath, yet after a moment of contemplation, he relented, "Golden retriever. Responds to Mutt."

An hour or so later, having found Mutt, the Gucci man opened a bottle of wine to celebrate the union. "We haven't known each other long." He stated, pouring a glass of the good stuff to Zi, "I would like to fix that."

The bounty hunter chuckled. It sounded hollow. He caught the other's eyes and spoke in a voice filled to brim with condescension, "Thank you for helping me find Mutt." He downed the drink in one go and stood up, "I will take your leave now. See you-" he smirked, "Hopefully, never."

"The world is too big; wouldn't it be better to spend it with someone rather than alone?" Xing asked, voice hopeful, "After all, no man is an island."

Zi pointed at himself, "This man is an island. He enjoys being one. And this island would like to leave."

Xing smiled; he caught up with the hermit, and leaning in, whispered, "Ha! I knew we were fated to meet, Brother. You know, I have always wanted to live close to an island."
