A pale man wearing a white coat appeared on the screen and smiled politely.
“Hello, everyone! I am Dr. Rakesh Malhotra from the beautiful state of Mei and I have been granted the honour of speaking for the International Today Channel. I am going to be talking about something that has been plaguing the world, prevalent since the early 2000s and a problem that is growing bigger each day.
The Ingenium.
Before I begin, let me give you a brief introduction to myself. I specialise in Human Genetics, a study which relates to the human species, Homo Sapiens, including origin, inheritance and genetic variation. I do not want to make it a science show, because I’m sure many of my viewers will leave, therefore the introduction to the strange species living among us normal humans will be short.”
He cracked a satisfied smile.
“As most of you know by now, the name Ingenium (Sing. Ingenium; Plu. Ingenium) comes from the Latin word Ingenium meaning quite simply, abilities, talent or genius in English. The name has been given to a specific group of humans that have certain abilities that normal humans do not have. They have control over certain aspects which normal humans do not have.
Experimentation showed us that this was because the Ingenium have a gene on their chromosomes, called Potens which makes them have power over certain things that we do not. It was fascinating to know that something as small as a genetic anomaly could create an entirely different species.
After much research, we have come to a very interesting conclusion, that no two Ingenium have the same power. At a given time, there exists a single ingenium only with a specific ability. You cannot find two Ingenium with the same abnormalities existing together. To put it simply, say we have a subject A, that can control water. Say there are a total of only twenty-six Ingenium, each corresponding to one letter of the English Alphabet. Then, by the rule according to which Ingenium exist, if Subject A is alive, none of the other Ingenium will have the power to control water. Each of the remaining Ingenium will have an ability of their own. That is, if there are twenty-six Ingenium involved, there will be a total of twenty-six powers.
However, if Subject A was to die, then any Ingenium born at a minimum of three days after the death, could have the power to control water. The power will not pass on to any existing Ingenium.
This clearly tells us that it is not just science at play. We can explain the occurrence of Ingenium, but we cannot explain the ability of a Potens gene to migrate from a dead body to that of a new born child. We cannot explain how having a gene can enable someone to control objects of the environment. Does it mean that the things which can be controlled have genes of their own? We do not know, and science cannot explain it.
At least, as of now.
The presence of Ingenium means there exists some kind of higher power. I do not believe in God, being a man of science, but I have experimented on enough Ingenium to know that this. Is. Not. Science.
The question arises, should we be scared?
We should.
Are Ingenium dangerous?
They are.
We used to think rainbows were a work of God and something to be scared of. Science proved that they are not. We used to be scared of the horizon. Science showed us that there was nothing to be afraid of. But this same science that could vouch for the existence of thousands over thousands of species, cannot answer much related to Ingenium. If this is not indication enough, I don’t know what is; that Ingenium are to be scorned, to be afraid of. They do not belong with us. They are not like us.
I therefore have an announcement from the S.T.F.U. Assembly (Stay Together, Forever United), that if anyone, anyone has any information about Ingenium, they are to report it immediately. Earth needs to be cleansed of Ingenium and this simple act can take us one step closer to doing that. We need your cooperation.
Before I finish, I have to draw your attention to an important topic.
Parents, guardians, relatives, when your children turn seventeen, it is essential that you let them take the test. We assure you, that if you are not Ingenium, you have nothing to fear. It is just a way for us to find out whether exists in your child’s body or not. We request you to not be afraid because anyone that runs from being tested will be termed as traitor, irrespective of whether they have the gene or not. We initially used the age seventeen because by then, even the late growers’ gene would be fully developed, so it is the perfect age to find out whether you were Ingenium or not.
There were rumours, no doubt started by Ingenium, that the machinery required for the test has harmful radiations which may cause cancer. It is false. The test is safe for every living being, human or Ingenium and we urge you to take it and be done with it. Earlier, the rule was that a person has time until three months after their seventeenth birthday to submit themselves to be tested, but the rule changes now. Every child has to have finished testing one month before the age of seventeen.
This is the new order and anyone protesting will be executed without further ado. Harsh? Yes. But recently, some brave government officials went after a group of Ingenium and not one of them returned. We visited the house that they went to raid and all we found was piles over piles of ashes.
They were burnt alive, all twenty-seven of them.
Ingenium are ruthless and we want to take severe action. We will take severe action. We will protect ourselves from that part of the society that thinks it is correct to kill people that only came over to their house to maintain peace in the world.
Together, we will rid the world of Ingenium."

I got up and walked over to Peter’s bathroom. The speech given by Dr. Malhotra was terrible and lacked important information. Like how the Government had started camps with the motto of peace with Ingenium in which they promised the Ingenium would live fruitful lives. The camps were sprung up everywhere for all children of age seventeen years and above and it was greeted with great enthusiasm by the parents of the Ingenium. My brother, Matthew, also decided to go, along with Jin.
The camp was a fancy name for a massacre. The moment all the children assembled, some were poisoned, some were staked, some were burnt alive and some were drowned. The only reason Jin escaped was because he read some official’s mind and saw exactly what they planned to do. He tried to tell the other kids, over and over, but they had set their eyes already on what they thought would be love from the world for being themselves and they thought that Jin was just being paranoid. He ran from there and came to me, hoping that I would be able to convince at least Matt, if not the others, to return home but I arrived in time to see my brother be tied to hay and burnt to death.
Fun, eh?
Matt and I had never been close, but he was my only relative that hadn’t tried to kill me so naturally, I was a little upset when I saw them murdering him. He wasn’t even one of the powerful ones, all he could do was change his eye colour, and he was killed for being able to do that.
I sighed and splashed water on my face. Grabbing the towel by the sink, I dabbed it on my cheeks and wiped away the droplets of water and with it my tears. I opened to door to see Jin standing outside. He walked in before and I had time to react and locked the door after him.
