BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder)

BPD is a disorder that makes the person with it struggle to regulate their emotions. Usually, it severly impacts the persons relationships with others.

Symptoms of BPD include:

-Unstable relationships with others
-Mood swings that usually last a few hours to a few days
-impulsivity
-'splitting' (black and white thinking)
-Abandonment issues

Some causes of BPD include abuse, neglect and growing up with a parent who had a serious mental health problem (such as Bipolar disorder, or a drink and/or drug misuse).

In most countries, unless the case is severe, BPD will not be diagnosed in someone under the age of 18. A lot of people with BPD are suicidal and self harm.

The mood swings can make someone feel overcome by emotion. For example, people with BPD might love someone more than anything in the world, but if that person did something to upset them - even minor things - suddenly they may resent the person just a few seconds later.

There are treatments for BPD, but it cannot be 'cured.' After about four years of treatement, however, over 80% of those with BPD no longer meet the criteria.

People with BPD often have a 'favorite person.' This is when they prefer one person who is considered the most important person in their life and want to spend all their time with them. Sadly though, this does mean that if that person is busy it may trigger anger and fear. They may believe this person is perfect and be the source of all their love and happiness, and they might rely on that person for those things. Usually this person is a romantic partner, but it can also be a close friend or family member.
