Chapter 2
Jack's P.O.V.
I rounded the corner of the sidewalk and shoved my hands into my pockets. It was raining heavily but it wasn't really bothering me. My mind was elsewhere. I stopped at a crosswalk and waited patiently for it to be safe to walk. When it finally turned, I dashed across the street quickly. I saw him standing in an alley, our usual meeting place, and I strode over to him.
"Hello," I said with a small wave.
"Hey Jack," Damien greeted, leaning back against the wall behind him.
"What have you been up to?" I asked politely.
"Oh, you know. The usual," He shrugged.
"Still looking for a reverse spell for Ever then?" I asked, sighing.
"Of course," He said furiously, suddenly consumed with anger. He shook his head and sighed, shoving is fingers through his matted brown hair.
"Look," I sighed. "Maybe you should give up," I suggested lightly.
"Give up!?" Damien shouted, drawing the attention of some passerby.
"Ever seems... happy. I don't need to know her that long to know that its been a while since that happened," I said, pulling up the hood of my jacket to shield myself from the rain.
"And why would she be happy?" Damien growled.
"You know exactly why," I frowned.
"Rie," He growled, balling his fists at his sides. I nodded slowly and leaned against the wall opposite of him, staring ahead.
"Why would you want to take that away from her? Don't you want the best for her?" I asked.
"Of course I do. I am the best for her," He snarled.
"I'm not saying that you're not but she seems genuinely happy with Rie," I said.
"She's not. Trust me," He huffed.
"Fine, fine," I murmured.
"I need to get rid of him," Damien whispered. My jaw dropped and I stared at him in awe.
"Damien you don't mean that! He's your friend!" I yelled.
"If he was my friend, he wouldn't be dating my mate!" He shouted.
"He's and angel for God's sake! You couldn't get near enough to hurt him even if you wanted," I sighed.
"I'll find a way," He sneered.
"Damien, pleaded don't do anything stupid," I pleaded.
"Why not?" He growled.
"Ever would never forgive you if you killed him," I stated matter-of-factly. I saw something flicker across Damien's eyes and he sighed.
"Fine, I'll find another way then," He muttered, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Atta boy," I smirked and clapped a hand on his shoulder. I looked down at the watch on my wrist and sighed. "I gotta get home. Ever expects me home for dinner," I laughed.
"Ever's cooking?" Damien asked, scrunching his nose.
"Yep," I chuckled. "Wish me luck."
Ever's P.O.V.
"Should I chop the lettuce?" I asked Rie.
"Ev, it's pre-shredded," He chuckled.
"I'll take that as a no then," I smiled. I turned towards the tomato and picked up the knife, positioning the blade at the end of it. I began slicing the tomato into thin strips when I heard Rie laughing behind me.
"That's so not how you do it," He smirked.
"Oh yeah? Why don't you do it then," I said, sticking my tongue out at him.
"Let me just show you how," He smiled and stood behind me, wrapping his arms around mine so he could guide my hands. He made me grab the knife and place it at the head, pushing the blade down swiftly. He guided me through the entire thing while I laughed when he got splattered with tomato juice.
"Got it now?" He smirked and placed his chin on my shoulder, keeping his arms around mine.
"I think so," I smiled and turned my head to look at him. He beat me there and pulled me into a kiss, turning me in his arms. I smiled against his lips when I heard the front door swing open. Rie groaned against my cheek and pulled away from me as Jack strode into the kitchen.
He looked back and forth between Rie and I and raised an eyebrow. "Am I interrupting something?" He asked.
"Yes," Rie sighed, leaning against the counter, looking irritated.
"Good," Smirked Jack. I stifled a laugh and turned back to my tomato task while Rie and Jack glared at each other.
"Taco's are almost done," I smiled and scrapped my diced tomatoes into a bowel. Rie smiled and Jack groan.
"Her cooking isn't that bad," Rie pointed.
"It's your job to think that," Jack smirked. "I on the other hand, can be completely honest."
"Well you're gonna eat it anyway," I demanded, pointing my knife at him. He held his arms up in surrender.
"Fine,fine," He sighed.
"Good boy," Rie smirked and patted Jack's damp hair. I ordered Rie and Jack to set the table while I gathered my taco ingredients. I brought them to the table once they were done and we added all the extras we desired. I piled cheese onto mine and Jack gave me a weird look.
"What?" I shrugged. "I like cheese."
He snorted and grabbed a handful of tomato cubes for his taco. Both Rie and Jack looked a bit hesitant to eat and I rolled my eyes at them.
"Hey, We have reason to be cautious," Jack pointed.
"Oh yeah?" I glared.
"Yes. You're an awful cook," He stated matter-of-factly.
"I am not!" I shouted.
"Then you take the first bite," Jack smirked.
"Fine. I will!" I huffed. I took a huge bite of the taco and chewed it slowly. Jack raised an eyebrow and I swallowed quickly.
"How was it?" He inquired.
"It was delicious," I said defiantly while supressing a shudder.
Jack burst into laughter and I pushed the taco away. "I can see right through your lies, Radke," He smirked.
"Okay okay, so it was terrible. Big deal," I shrugged.
"How does one even mess up tacos?" Rie laughed.
"Like Ever I guess," Jack snorted. I rolled my eyes and Rie smirked at me.
"We can order Chinese?" Jack offered.
"Oh no way," I groaned, scrunching my nose. "I hate Chinese food."
"You what!?" Jack gasped. "You're not human!"
"Neither are you!" I laughed.
"True true," Jack smirked.
Rie drove out to pick up some burgers from the diner down the street and Jack and I plopped down on the couch side by side. He brushed my shoulder and I tilted my head, sniffing the air.
"Who's scent is that? It smells familiar," I asked.
"Uh.. It's Isacc's. I stopped by to drop off a plant that he was looking for," He shrugged.
"Oh," I smirked. "Such a helper."
"That's me!" Jack grinned.
I laughed and leaned back against the back of the couch, yawning in the process. I side and jumped up, shaking the blanket I was cover with off me.
"Where are you going?" Jack asked.
"For a run," I said as I padded towards the back door.
"Uh, don't you need shoes on?" Jack smirked.
"Nah. A wolf wearing shoes would look silly," I laughed and stepped out onto the back porch, closing the door behind me. I quickly stripped out of my pajamas and shifted, leaping into the rain. I hit the ground running and bolted into the forest surrounding the house, my pale brown pelt collecting water droplets. The sun was setting and I darted towards it, dodging fallen branches and logs.
A large boulder appeared in my path and I ran up the side of it and leaped into the air at the top. For a moment, it almost felt like I was flying. My front paws hit the ground and I bounded towards a clearing. I slowed to a stop in front of a large stone formation that resembled a doorway and shifted back, grabbing a pair of clothes I had hidden under a rock last time I was here.
After yanking them on, I sat down on one of the larger stones and stared up at the structure. I had stumbled across it one day on accident and found the area quite relaxing. I came here often as an escape from my slightly crazy life.
I saw a glint of light out of the corner of my eye and turned my head. Hopping down from the stone I was on, I strode over to where I had seen the glint of light and pulled back a bush that was partially covering a stone. I bent down and grabbed the odd object and twisted it in my hand.
It was flat and about the size of a apple and was made of silver. It had a quarter sized letter E printed on it in swirly cursive handwriting. I turned it over in my palm and saw that there was an inscription on the back.
Dear Ever,
I've missed you. I can't come see you because I don't think you're quite ready for that but I would still like to keep in contact. Now dear, I will send you these messages periodically in different ways so keep on eye out. By the way, if inform your little boyfriend or you wolf pet about this I will not hesitate to kill them. Have a nice day Darling.
Love, Cassandra
I shivered against the rain and dropped the silver plate. It hit the ground and dissolved, destroying any evidence of the message. I quickly tore out of my clothes and and shifted into a wolf, bolting into the forest and growled inwardly. When I finally reached the house, I shifted back and threw my clothes on. I strode into the house as nonchalantly as I could and dropped into the seat next to Rie at the table. He pushed a cheeseburger towards but I shook my head.
"Are you sure? You haven't eaten much today," Rie frowned.
"I'm not hungry anymore," I said quietly.
"Are you alright?" He asked worriedly.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I smiled weakly.
"If you say so," He shrugged. "I'll put your food in the microwave if you want it later."
"Thanks," I muttered. Rie grabbed my hand and led me to his room, the two of us laying back against his pillows. I curled against his side and layed my head on his shoulder as he wrapped his arms around me.
"Hey Ev?" He whispered quietly in my ear.
"Yeah?" I responded.
"Are you sure you're alright?" He asked.
I sighed slowly against his neck and scooted closer to him.
"Yeah. I'm perfectly fine," I said quietly. I felt a pit in my stomach and held back a frown. I hated lying to Rie.
