Prologue

Low humming shook the floor, causing his feet to vibrate somewhat uncomfortably. The machine was no bigger than a closet. It seemed almost fake that an engineering marvel such as this existed.

A bright light blazed forth from under the door leading into the device, causing him to jump back. Fog billowed from under the door crack as well. He looked down at the remote he held in his hand. The four-digit year emblazoned on the screen reminded him of where he was going. A new adventure.

The sweat made the remote hard to grasp. He'd have to get a new shirt later. With that thought, he hit a button on the remote and set it down beside the glass of water next to him on a table. More fog flooded the room as the door slid open, revealing a hospital-white interior. The smell of the air was almost sweet. There was a plain bench inside, not much room.

He cautiously approached the humming device, feeling its vibrations grow stronger as he got closer. It made him feel a bit nauseous, but as he stepped across the door's threshold, the vibrating sensation ceased. He looked at the glass of water, which was still rippling.

The vibrating is only outside.

But that wasn't important. A beeping sound started to play as the door started to slide shut, sealing him in his journey. The remote was on the table. There was no turning back now.
