The Unexpected Return (13th)

For those who like anticlimactic scenes...

Ding!

Your head snapped towards the source of the sound - a weird device in the Doctor's hands.

"What's that?"

She waved it about, "This? It's a machine that goes 'Ding!' when there's stuff."

As she studied the readings on the device, her face scrunched up, "There's a huge anomaly coming from that warehouse."

And in the distance stood the warehouse that looked extremely normal.

"Wanna take a look?" She smirked and offered her hand. You took it and off you went.

Approaching the door, the Doctor let go of your hand and put a finger to her lip. Getting the idea, you nodded and kept your mouth shut.

"One..." she mouthed and you prepared yourself mentally.

"Two..." you could feel your heart thumping in your ear.

"Three!"

The door burst open and you and the Doctor watched as the terror unfolded before your eyes, literally. Your legs seemed to turn into jelly but you didn't dare move a muscle. On the other hand, the Doctor started to smile.

"Bit anticlimactic, don't you think?" she said. You could tell she was a little unimpressed, but she still sounded excited, "Of all the people we faced before, you're the one that appears for the finale."

"That's one big anomaly," you finally found your voice again as your eyes travelled up to the top of the foe, "But how-"

"Hold on," the Doctor said as she dug through her pockets. What she was looking for wasn't in there, so she turned to you, "Mind lending me your phone?"

With shaky hands, you fished out your phone from your pocket and handed it to her. She dialled a number, and as the call started, she turned to the foe and said, "Stay there, don't move and wait till I'm off the phone, thank you!"

Then she turned to you, "And you too."

Someone on the other line picked up, and the Doctor started her conversation.

"Hey Yaz! Gonna make this real quick, so three questions. First, do you remember your neighbour Anna?"

There was a small pause, "Yep, she's dead. Anyway! Second question, has her apartment been cleaned up?"

You and the creature shared a look before staring at the Doctor in silence.

"Brilliant. Third question, did anyone scream during the clean-up process?"

After hearing a reply, the Doctor hung up and tossed you your phone back. She turned to the foe.

"So," she said, "You managed to escape, got a bit bigger since I last saw you. How big are you? Tractor size?"

The massive spider clicked its pinchers and closed in on you and the Doctor. The Doctor put out her hands, "No! No, stay where you are, I don't know if I can trust you yet."

It clicked again, and the Doctor seemed to be digesting its words.

"Since when did you speak spider?" you asked, your muscles relaxing seeing as the spider did not make any sudden movements.

The Doctor grinned, "Since that spider incident. Thought it would be useful to pick up a new language. Did I tell you that I speak baby too?"

You shook your head, eyes still on the spider. It clicked, and the Doctor nodded in response.

"Uh huh," she said, "It escaped through the rubbish chute, been hiding here ever since, feeding on insects, clever boy," the spider clicked back ferociously, "Oh okay! You're a girl! Mind if I call you Cassie?"

You didn't know what was stranger: the fact that you were watching the Doctor converse with a spider or the fact that you hadn't run out yet. Usually, you wouldn't be found in the same room as spiders.

"Doctor?"

"Hold on," she said, "She's saying something important."

Cassie started to click endlessly, like she was asking for help. When she stopped, the Doctor walked up to her and placed a hand on one of her legs. Her expression softened as she lay her head on it and stroked the fur.

Graham has definitely not seen it all yet.

"Doctor, what's going on?"

Suddenly, the Doctor sprang up and rushed past you, giving you a pat on the shoulder, "Look after her! I'm going back to the TARDIS to get something."

"What?!"

She was gone, leaving you and Cassie alone. Cassie clicked once.

"Um...hi?" you replied, unsure if she understood.

When she didn't respond, you clicked your tongue like how the Doctor did. She clicked again and moved towards you. Still not comfortable with being left alone with a giant spider, you backed up against the wall. You could feel sweat starting to form on your head as she inched closer to your face. You couldn't breathe, where was the Doctor?

Her pinchers got closer by the second. You couldn't move. Her eight eyes were staring intently into yours, it was intimidating, so you shut them. Why did the Doctor leave you alone with a giant spider?! Ten weeks in and this was not how you imagined yourself dying.

Finally, after an eternity, the Doctor was back.

"Reducio!"

A yellow ray hit Cassie and suddenly you could breathe again. The giant spider had shrunk to the size of a dog. You looked at the Doctor who flipped her sonic in the air and caught it.

"Knew this new software would come in handy!"

Cassie started stretching her legs while you walked towards the Doctor.

"Wrong universe, Doctor," you said, catching her sonic mid-air. The Doctor snatched it back.

"Thought about getting into the Potter vibe, especially since the new Fantastic Beasts movie was released! Did you know in movie 5-"

"Okay!" you stopped her there, "Spoilers!"

She blinked as realisation dawned upon her, "Oh right. Still 2018 then."

Cassie scurried towards the Doctor and climbed on her. The Doctor laughed.

"Do you think the fam would like her?" She asked with Cassie on her back.

"What? You're not thinking of keeping her, are you?"

She looked at you as though the answer was obvious. You gave her a weird look, then watched as Cassie clicked something into her ear before making your way to the TARDIS.

"I'll look after her, I promise!"

You rolled your eyes but you couldn't stop the smile on your face from growing. Without looking back, you shouted, "You reckon Ryan would like a new sleeping partner?"

"That's the spirit!" The Doctor ran up to you with Cassie on her shoulder and entered the TARDIS. The spider clicked, with the Doctor replying, "Yes, it's bigger on the inside."

This was it. This was your life with the Doctor. It's been a blast, and no matter how strange it got, you couldn't wait for more. You loved it.

"You know where we should go next?" The Doctor asked as her hand hovered over the lever, "2020."

With a wink, she pulled the lever, sending the TARDIS flying through the time vortex.
