Friendships Gone Wrong (10th & 13th)

For those who like two Doctors and angst...

It wasn't the same. It never was. Travelling with the new Doctor was entirely different from the last one. Sure, they had the same energy, same enthusiasm, but it's just...different.

So when you saw him, your emotions went haywire.

"Hello there! You alright?"

That accent soothed your soul to the core. You thought you would never hear it again, ever. When the Doctor came to pick you up again just a month after he dropped you off, you thought his TARDIS was stolen. The time machine was different, inside and out. The Doctor changed entirely, and according to her, she already regenerated three whole times. To think one month was a long break from the alien, what was thousands, maybe billions of years compared to it? It's a wonder she even remembered you at all.

"This can't be right," you muttered, "You can't be here."

"What?"

The Doctor, dressed smartly in his brown, pinstripe suit, walked around the console and towards you. It was the old one, no, the original one. The one he invited you in to travel.

"(Y/N)? What're you talking about?"

He waved his hand in front of your face, but the only thing you could do was stare. First, at his attire, then at his shoes, his hair, his TARDIS, and finally into his eyes. Those eyes, they reminded you so much of home.

You couldn't even conclude if that was real or not, but what really mattered to you was that he was here. Alive, well, unchanged. You threw your arms over his shoulders and embraced him in a tight hug.

You could tell he had no idea why he did that, but he reciprocated, rubbing your back as an effort to calm your unsteady breathing.

"I missed you so much," you choked back a sob.

"I just saw you yesterday," he said, confused, "We were at the Icicle Palace, free colour-changing snow cones! Don't you remember?"

That was exactly what happened during the last trip with this Doctor. Maybe everything else was a dream. The Doctor you were travelling with now was made up. Maybe you were being paranoid and created a new version of the Doctor. You do tend to worry a lot.

But it can't be, because she's standing right there, at the TARDIS door.

The look in her eye was deadly, "(Y/N), step back."

"What?" Both you and him had the same shocked expression on your faces.

One of her hands was on the door handle, the other stretched out in an attempt to reach you.

"You heard me. Take my hand. We need to go."

"What?" There was genuine confusion written all over his face and he gripped your hand, "Who are you?"

The Doctor's tone wasn't pleasant as she launched into an explanation, words firing out of her mouth faster than a machine gun, "I'm you, future you, but that's not entirely accurate. Because I can't be you. You're me, past me. You're mimicking my past, here to take (Y/N) away from me."

"What proof do you have?" He retaliated, holding your hand tighter.

"Well, you should remember you regenerated."

"I what?"

"Clever, you're adapting."

"Doctor," you interrupted, voice shaking, "What's going on?"

A second later it was clear that that question was a bad idea. Both Doctors started rambling so fast you couldn't catch up.

"Stop! I can't hear both of you!" You were at the edge of tears, torn between each Doctor. One was real, the other wasn't, except both were extremely real to you at the moment.

"(Y/N)," he spoke first, "That is clearly a Zygon or alien that's a little wonky up here," he pointed to his brain, "Trying to impersonate me. You know I'm real. I never regenerated!"

Those eyes, you were staring into them again. They were so familiar and homey.

"No, (Y/N)," she started, "It's not right. Time moves forwards, not backwards, that's a past me. I can't go back to being younger!"

"I'm a Timelord! Time is wibbly wobbly! You're the one posing as me. How can I possibly change that drastically?" He cut in, inching closer to her.

"We're in the Solitract universe, (Y/N). A conscious universe. It doesn't exist in your reality. It wants to join us, but it can't, so it's using you as a template to copy and paste us into it."

Your heart was beating faster than the Doctor's two heartbeats combined. Switching your glance between one Doctor from another, you contemplated. Both sounded convincing, but only one was right.

Her voice was louder this time, and she wasn't talking to you, "You know, I thought you were my friend, after that one incident where you almost took Graham. But here you are, taking away my best friend in the world. That's not a very good friend now, is it?"

He blinked, "What?"

She groaned in frustration, "Sure, play the innocent. Our friendship is over. (Y/N), come on. Let's go."

She grabbed your hand forcefully and pulled you away from him. It hurt, it really did. You could already feel the blood flow in your hand stop. The Doctor would never treat you that way, so you stopped in your tracks, planting your feet firmly into the ground.

"(Y/N), we got to go. We can't stay here," she looked straight into your eyes and it was different. Reflected in them was anger, anger that you've never seen before. Hatred, one that's of another level, one you didn't recognise. She was different, she can't be it.

You pulled your hand away from hers.

"No."

She didn't know how to react.

"You're not the Doctor."

The Doctor you knew would never leave you behind, regenerate three times and come back billions of years later. He would never hurt you like that. Never.

"(Y/N), don't-"

"The Doctor wouldn't hurt me. Not like this."

You were already shaking your head as you walked backwards towards your Doctor. He wrapped his arm around your waist.

Realisation dawned on her like a brick.

"I didn't mean to," her expression softened, "(Y/N), please-"

For some reason, something felt off, but maybe it was just you waking from your dream. He nodded at you encouragingly.

"Get out," you asserted, lips quivering slightly as you found the courage to say the words that would break her.

"And don't come back."

Nothing left her mouth, but you saw her eyes. They glistened in the light, and just for a second, you recognised them. But then it was gone, and you had forgotten all about it. She turned and left, feet heavy, and closed the door gently. You turned to the Doctor, and he smiled. You returned it.

"Well then!" He exclaimed, "Now that that's over, how about we pop over to Lake Coke? Did I mention that Coke actually made it universal? There's even a lake for it!"

You laughed. It was all back to normal. You and your Doctor, off to see the universe together. Nothing's changed.

Yet for her, everything has. Her friend betrayed her. Her best friend was gone. She was alone. But worst of all, no one took you away. You chose to leave her.

No, she's not giving up now. You've been deceived, and she has to set things right, the proper way. Spinning the hour glass, she eyed the jacket you left, determined.

"I'm going to get you back (Y/N), I promise."
