The Descent Into Hell Isn't Easy
All the myths and legends of demons and creatures were real. The thought kept running through Charlotte's head, though she had enough time to digest and continue on. Yet now she stood here with her brother, best friend, and a man that she had just met tonight who she still wasn't sure if he was crazy or not.
If Jace was crazy though, Charlotte was sure she was too after all she saw. Simon on the other hand didn't get to see first hand what she saw. The demon that would have killed Clary if it got the chance.
"Clary." Charlotte called to get Clary's attention. The red head zoned out as the two men pushed her limits. "Okay guys, back off. Lots of testosterone and toxic masculinity. Give her a minute." Charlotte tells the two as she pushed them back the slightest bit.
"Clary, come on we gotta go." Simon says wanting to beckon her towards his side.
"Simon," Clary says while turning to her best friend, "Jace can help us."
"What?" He asked incredulously.
"Come on." She grabbed him by the arm and the three followed Jace towards the church.
"You're gonna freak when you get in here." Charlotte tells her brother. Even she still couldn't believe it. An abandoned church was the place that helped her and her friend a few minutes ago.
"How do you know this McJagger looking guy isn't gonna try-" Jace turned back to Simon interrupting him.
"Mundane. We do not have the time."
"Come on, Simon. Let's go." Clary says as the three continued to follow the shadowhunter into the church. It was frighteningly dark and spooky to Charlotte like it was almost halloween. But Halloween wasn't that close and this was no prank. Jace began to draw a rune on himself while Simon looked at Clary in shock and disbelief. Charlotte still couldn't believe that was one of th things that shadowhunters did, and she wondered if Clary would have to go through that a lot.
"I know, trust me." Clary whispered to him.
"He's like burning himself." He whispers back. Suddenly Charlotte felt her hand being grabbed roughly and heard the sound of Simon's hand being grabbed as well. "Buddy what's going on man, I'm not your type-" Simon starts to stutter and becomes silent watching the church rebuild itself.
"Where are we? What the hell? Clary is there a war going on that I don't know about?" Simon asks still in a daze.
"There is now." Jace replies as he walks on towards his friends.
"And I think my mother's at the center of it." Clary adds on. She moves on as well following after Jace.
"And you're definitely not his type, Simon." Charlotte says with a chuckle.
"How are you not freaking out about this, Charlie?" He asks pulling Charlotte closer to the door.
"Oh no don't worry. I am definitely freaking out. I'm just not showing it like how you do. Ya know Simoning it."
"Stop using my name as a verb." Simon sighs out. "But seriously, doesn't this seem insane to you?"
Charlotte faltered and looked back at Clary and Jace. "Yeah, but come on Simon. It's Clary. We have to be there for her. Her mom's gone and Luke may not be able to get us out of this. This is the best thing for her now. We have to help in some way."
"You coming?" Jace asked.
"Yeah," Charlotte replies as Simon reluctantly follows.
"What is this place? There's a lot of gear in here, what they did they do, rob a tech shop?"Jace went through security footage on the screens they had.
"So this cold blooded killer is gonna help us?" Simon asks Clary. Charlotte sighs at her brother's question.
"He's not a killer. He's protecting us." Clary answers him.
"Specifically you. It's sort of our thing." Jace then adds with a bit of sass.
"Your thing? You guys have a thing?" Simon asks, anger starting to rise in him. 'More like jealously.' Charlotte thinks, rolling her eyes.
"He means a shadowhunter thing. It's what they do, protecting humans from demons."
"Demons. Right, that makes perfect sense cause there are demons running around New York."
"That is the first correct thing you said all day." Jace tells Simon, pulling up footage.
"Also the first correct thing he said for most of his life." Charlotte jokes earning a glare from her brother and a look of amusement from Jace.
"NYPD." The footage said.
"Won't they find us?" Clary asks.
"No. Our wards will deter them. The NYPD will do their mundie thing for a few hours and then the area will be clear."
"What is going on?" Charlotte hears the voice of the cranky shadowhunter that had a distaste for her. "Why are there two mundanes in the institute?"
"So I take it you didn't like my last visit? I'll try not to take it to heart." Charlotte comments to the tall boy who just glared in her direction.
"Circle member followed him to get to Clary. They're siblings."
"Yeah, can't get rid of me that easily buddy, sorry." Charlotte says to Alec once more making him question whether or not to throw her out.
"A circle rune just like the one on the guys that took my mother."
"What exactly is a circle member?" Simon buts in with his question. "And why are they trying to kill us?"
"All we know is a long time ago the circle later revolt. Lot of shadowhunters got killed. Including my father." Jace answers Simon's mundane question.
"And since the revolt we've been forbidden to even hear about the circle."
"But how's that even possible, it's your history."
"Yeah, seems kind of stupid to not talk about it though." Charlotte adds "Then you don't know anything, while they could know everything about you. It's like us not talking about all the bad stuff that happened here in schools."
"Enough mundane." Jace sighs out and walks away as Charlotte chuckles. "And says the girl who didn't know she was a shadowhunter."
"Yeah, yeah you're right. And now the only person who knows the truth is missing. So I don't care about your rules or what's forbidden. There's gotta be someone who's out there who can tell us why they took my mother."
"There is." Jace says.
"Couldn't tell us that sooner? Had to brood and look good?" Charlotte asks with a fake look of pity. Jace glared over at the human girl. He then moved away, "you coming?" He asks. Clary and the two only mundanes in the institute followed him. "No not you two." Jace tells Charlotte and Simon.
"Hey we're a package deal." Clary defends her friends.
"Yeah." Simon lamely agrees.
"There are runes all over that floor that would kill your mundie boyfriend."
"Hey he's not my boyfriend!"
"I'm not her boyfriend."
"I guess it's open season for me then?" Charlotte says along with Simon and Clary in unison.
"We're just friends." Simon adds on as Jace stares at the two awkwardly.
"Best friends." Clary continues.
"Are we gonna ignore the fact that he didn't second guess about letting me walk on the death floor?" Charlotte pushes in between Clary and Simon.
"Well you can take it. And I'm tough I can handle runes." Simon says punching Jace's arm and then shaking it in slight pain. "Bring on the runes. What exactly are runes?"
"Simon, stop. You're embarrassing yourself." Charlotte sighed out.
"They give shadowhunters our demon hunting powers. " A voice says as the two mundanes turn around. Isabelle showed one of her runes on her arm, Charlotte stared in awe of the rune and Simon stared in awe of the girl.
"So hot." Simon mumbled. Charlotte had to stop herself from gagging at her brother's words and elbowed him in the gut. Simon cleared his throat awkwardly and turned to the two behind him, "The rune."
"Shut up." Charlotte whispers.
Izzy walked over to Simon with a strut. "Don't worry Clary I'll watch over Charlie and the best friend. In fact I was about to make breakfast."
Jace breathed in and said jokingly, "On second thought the runes might be less lethal."
"I'll pretend I didn't hear that. Please excuse my brother's manners." She holds out her hand, pointing to Alec. "This is Alec." She then puts it back towards Simon as if for him to kiss it. "And I'm Isabelle."
Simon just shook the hand very sloppily. "Lewis. Simon Lewis. Two first names, why am I still talking?"
"Cause you're an idiot who brings up my blood pressure." Charlotte answers his rhetorical question. Simon just scoffed at his twin.
"See, best friends safe and sound here." Jace tells Clary.
"Jace if anything happens to them-"
"Go on, I'll be fine. I think." Charlotte rolled her eyes.
"Don't worry Clary. I think we'll be fine with Izzy. Once he learns how to breathe near a girl that isn't related to him or you."
"Where are we going?" Clary asks Jace after realizing her friends would be fine.
"Training room." Clary walked away as Jace leaned in towards the twins. "Hey uh, don't eat the food. Dangerous."
"Jace you coming?" Clary calls.
"Yeah." He replies as Isabelle pulls Simon away and Charlotte follows them with a sigh and a roll of her eyes.
Simon and Charlotte sat on Isabelle's bed, waiting for her to come back with the food they were warned not to eat. "So," Charlotte started, "you gonna eat the food?"
"Really? That's all you can think about after all this?" Simon asks his sister.
"I had my time to freak out. I got over it. I went through all the possibilities. It's not a prank, I saw a demon try to eat Clary, I'm not tripping, but I think those would probably be better than reality. Demons and shadowhunters and circles oh my!"
"You know, if you want to admit you're scared now you can. No one else is here, it's just me Charlie."
Charlotte looked at her brother and breathed out heavily. She wanted to let go of the sarcasm and comments just for a little and just be angry or be scared. But she couldn't, at least not now.
Isabelle's heels clicked into the room and she arrived with food on a tray. She places the tray down and sits next to Simon on the edge of the bed while Charlotte sat on the middle, shoes off and feeling the comfiness of the mattress.
"So, so what happens to humans if they're runed?" Simon asks the shadowhunter.
"They usually die." She responds bluntly. "Sometimes they go crazy. When that happens we call them the forsaken. Then we kill them."
"Why would a human get runed anyway?" Charlotte asks sitting up in interest.
Simon interrupts his twin. "Wait so the rune on Clary's neck-"
"A healing rune. Jace used it to save her life."
"Right, I saw him do that to her. I thought he was just burning her or something."
"So Jace knew she was a shadowhunter." Simon continued speaking.
"He was almost certain." Simon stood up abruptly but was stopped by Izzy who got to him fast. Charlotte gasped at what she did and got up from the bed. "Where could you possibly be going?"
"To get Clary. To protect her from Jace." Simon says as he is lightly put down to the bed by Izzy.
"Simon I don't think you're capable of that have you seen him? He makes you look like a puppy." Charlotte scoffs.
"Why would she need protection from Jace? He's the ultimate protector."
"And it's not like he did anything to hurt her. Literally since I met him it's been all about Clary." Charlotte adds thinking back to how Jace seemed to be infatuated with the red head. It was like the main leads in a webtoon or novel she would read.
"What makes Jace so special?" Simon asks. Of course, Charlotte thought, he's jealous.
"Fastest, strongest, fiercest. And hello, have you seen the guy?"
"Yeah well, uh sorry I asked." Charlotte resisted the urge to roll her eyes at Simon who had the nerve to get so upset over a guy who literally was protecting Clary. Charlotte wouldn't mind being protected by a handsome guy and becoming a badass all at once. But she'd save that for her best friend to have. This was Clary's new world, not hers, she just shoved her way in this world.
"Rest easy hombre. Clary's in good hands."
"It's the hands he's worried about." Charlotte whispers as her brother hits her leg. Charlotte went back to sitting at the edge of her bed and looked at the tray of food.
"Mm. Don't worry. There's plenty where that came from." Isabelle says with her mouth full of food.
Charlotte thought back to Jace's joke and then took a chip and dipped into the very chunky dip, she actually wasn't sure what it was. Putting the chip in her mouth she chewed for two seconds and instantly the taste was sour in her mouth. Isabelle looked at Charlotte with hopeful eyes and a bright smile with Charlotte mimicked chewing more slowly.
'Jace was right!' Charlotte thought. Charlotte quickly shook her head at her twin without the shadowhunter seeing.
"So the Circle, if they're as bad as they say they are, it's not good for Clary, is it?" Simon asks moving the food around.
"It's not good for any of us." Isabelle answers seriously, staring Simon in the eyes.
"Well that's not good I guess." Charlotte chuckles nervously.
--
"This is the least revealing thing you have?" Clary asks looking into a mirror. Charlotte dreaded this moment. Looking for clothes. She shuddered at the thought.
Izzy chuckles going over to Clary, standing behind her. "What? All the naughty bits are covered. A little too much in my opinion."
"So I couldn't be with my brother, cause of clothes?" Charlotte asks with a look of disgust on her face. It's not the process it's usually the clothes. Perhaps she just wasn't too ready to go all out. It wasn't her.
"Where is Simon, by the way?" Clary asks Izzy.
"Who?" With a look of shock and terror from Clary, Izzy continued, "Kidding. He's in good hands with the boys."
"And I could be with them. Annoying them. Ya know, being a mundane."
"But we need you here. I've been dying to give you something since we met. If we got those glasses and got you in something tight, perfect."
Charlotte looked at the girl she just met with a glare. "Glasses stay on."
"But you didn't say anything about the outfit!" Izzy says in victory going to her closet.
Clary walked away from the mirror and leaned against the pole while Charlotte lay on the bed with Izzy's permission. "So you, Alec and Jace are what like, family?" She asks Izzy.
Izzy chuckles and looks back to Clary. She grabbed something black from the closet and threw it at Charlotte.
"Translation, you want to know if Jace and I are a thing." Charlotte looked at the dress and looked at Izzy with wide eyes. "Take it. Deal with it." Izzy smiles at the girl and flops on the bed next to her.
Clary scoffs lightly. "Why would I care? And Charlotte doesn't wear anything like that. Trust me."
"Oh, she'll love it."
"She is right here." Charlotte announces. She looked at the dress, a strapless leather dress, and held it to her. It could be nice, she thought.
"And because you do. Don't worry, in every way he's like my brother. Our parents took Jace in when he was 10. We trained together. Learned to fight side by side."
"So you've been training since you were so young? Wow at 10 I worried about if I got a 4 on my math test." Charlotte said.
"A few days ago all I had to worry about was getting into art school." Clary admits. Charlotte thought back to just a few days ago. Then it was just the three of them, and Charlotte's biggest worry was figuring out what she wanted to do with her life. College wasn't the problem for her, it was the future. How could she decide her future? Everything could change in a matter of moments. "And now..."
"Is this the part where I give you the pep talk about harnessing your inner shadowhunter and accepting your destiny?"
"Yes, that's how it usually goes in the books. Come on, tell the newbie how it's gonna be alright?" Charlotte says pointing to Clary.
"Was that the pep talk?" Clary asks.
Izzy chuckles. "Basically." Charlotte looks at the two in confusion. 'Hmm the novels usually aren't like this.' She thought.
"Clary," Izzy gets up and takes a few steps to Clary putting a strand of hair away from her face. "remember, you were born to do this. No matter what has happened, this is who you are."
"There it is." Charlotte mutters.
"Not exactly feeling that."
"Yet."
"Okay, now we just have to find Dot."
"Yeah and not demon Dot. My heart can't handle that surprise again." Charlotte says with a look of disgust on her face thinking back to the demon that looked like the woman she saw so many times.
"And track down and kill the most dangerous rogue shadowhunter in history before he kills us all."
"You really know how to ruin a pep talk, don't you?"
"Come on let's go." Izzy says. She turns back to Clary and smiles. "Oh, and Simon is kinda nerd-hot."
"Oh god! No!" Charlotte yells at Izzy. "You could do so much better Izzy!"
-
"Let's get out of here. You, me, and Charlie. We can get Dot ourselves." Simon says to Clary as he puts on his jacket eagerly.
"Simon, I think she has better chances with the shadowhunter siblings with powers and good looks rather than us humans."
"There are demons out there. Actual demons with tentacles that wanna murder us. Do you know how to kill a demon?"
"I'm an internet search away." Simon replies to Clary.
"Yeah and shadowhunters usually show up on the internet, you don't know what you're doing, Si. Neither do I. It's not that simple. Clary needs the shadowhunters to help her. "
"I bet you it's not that hard."
Izzy presses a button that lets a wall move out of place for a stash of weapons to be revealed. "Whoa." Charlotte says in admiration.
"You like?" Izzy asks
"Hell yeah, look at them. So interesting." Charlotte says as she walks up to them.
"No Izzy." Jace smacks Izzy's hand which delicately touched the swords. Charlotte observed them like she was looking at art in a museum.
"Fifty bucks says he doesn't approve of this mission."
"I don't approve of this mission." Charlotte laughed and covered her mouth to stifle her laugh. "Don't let her touch anything." She hears him say. Of course, the only one who could be that cranky for no reason, Alec.
"I wasn't going to." Charlotte says.
Alec scoffed and then went back to his siblings. "I spoke with the Clave. They've sent seelie scouts to look for Valentine but they made it clear, the little girl does not leave the premises."
"Is that just cause your tall? Cause I don't think the Clave would say that." Charlotte mocks Alec who sighed.
"Yeah my name is not little girl, okay? I don't care what that Clave thing or you have to say. I'm going to find Dot."
"Alec, this warlock could have the answers we need." Jace pleads with Alec, "With Valentine's people out there searching for Clary, she's not safe outside alone." Charlotte listened to their arguments and thought about the safest option for Clary. Would staying in the institute be better for her? So that the men and demons she saw coming after Clary not find her.
"Jace has a point." Izzy says to Alec. This wasn't Charlotte's world she had no clue what was right to do.
"Et tu, Izzy?"Alec asks with sarcasm, he turns to Clary with disdain in his voice. "Alright, since you have all the answers, where do you suggest we search?"
"We should start at Dot's apartment in Greenpoint, and there's this thrift store that she-" Clary stood there and looked into the distance with a gasp. Charlotte stepped closer to her friend and stared at her in confusion.
"What's wrong? What is it?"
"I, um.." Clary exhales, "Weirdly, I think I know where Dot is."
"Did your weird necklace tell you that?" Charlotte asked, still utterly confused.
"Great I'll drive." Simon says. Everyone looked at him and he stared back at the group. "What? Unless you have, like, a shadowhunter-mobile or something."
"That'd be awesome! Do you?!" Charlotte gasped in excitement.
Simon looked down and then asked, "You were kidding about the runes on the floor killing us, right?"
"Possibly." Jace replies with a smirk, slapping Simon's cheek slightly as the two shadowhunter boys walk away.
"I think he was kidding. We would be dead by now... probably."
"Wait, are we gonna die?" Simon asked when everyone started walking away.
---
Passing corners of buildings, Clary sped up with urgency. It reminded Charlotte of the night she had to run to catch up with Clary each time she ran for her mom. Dot was just as important to Clary, and she was alway kind to Charlotte and her brother. Clary stopped abruptly feeling her necklace once more and gasped out loud. She then yelled for Dot running faster. "Oh here we go." Charlotte muttered preparing herself to run faster which she did not plan to do any longer that night. She'd usually be sleeping at this point, or writing. Running around the city to find Dot wasn't something she planned on.
As they kept running Jace finally caught up with Clary. "Where are you going?" He asked. Clary stopped and replied out of breath.
"Two men. Circle members, the same ones who came to my house, who took my mom." Charlotte remembered the men, they reeked of danger. "They have Dot. They're gonna hurt her or kill her. We have to stop them!" She started to run again turning the corner to get inside a club, Pandemonium.
"Just great." Charlotte groaned out as she picked up the pace again to keep up.
"You suck at running, Charlotte!" Simon yells out.
"Shut it." Charlotte gasps out. The club was more inviting now, no people filled up the club to capacity, Charlotte heard the echoes of their footsteps and looked all around. When she took a second to actually look at Pandemonium, it wasn't as bad as she first assumed. Take out all the mundane idiots from the equation, and the club was enjoyable. The bright lights, the decor. Right, Dot. Charlotte thought to herself. Focus on her. She jogged forward to catch up to her best friend and brother who ran up to Clary.
Clary's breath trembled, "No. She was just trying to help me." She turned back to the group, "Now she's gone."
"Clary, I'm sorry." Simon said, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"I'm sure she's alright, she's strong." Charlotte said to help Clary a bit.
"You don't understand, Dot's like my big sister."She said to the shadowhunters.
"It's not safe here. We have to go back to the institute right now." Charlotte thought Alec had a point, she was sure if they took Dot not too long ago, they could all be in danger.
"So, what now? Valentine has my mom and Dot, and we're just gonna give up? What about my memories? They can't just be gone?"
"There is another option."
"Don't even-"
"Absolutely not." The two lightwoods say in sync.
"I'm not afraid of the Silent Brothers."
"The name Silent Brothers alone scares me. They don't sound too friendly. How would they help?" Charlotte says.
"They can help."
"Who are the Silent Brothers?" Clary then asks.
"They're shadowhunters with superior powers."
"Who possess the ability to recover memories." Isabelle adds on to the explanation.
"A process that can also kill you, so there's that." Alec adds on as well.
"Your beside manner is abysmal." Simon tells Alec.
"Okay, so that's a no. No one's dying, right Clary?" Charlotte wanted to decide. She didn't want her best friend possibly dying just to retrieve some memories of her past she doesn't have.
"We've broken at least 18 Clave rules and now you want to go to the City of Bones? There's no way I won't allow it."
"Come on, who names a city after bones? It's just begging for people to die there! We can't go, Clary." Charlotte says
"See, even the mundane knows it's a bad idea." Alec tells Jace.
"This isn't our choice to make. This is Clary's decision." Jace replies to him. Charlotte looks at Clary who seemed to be pending on the idea.
"You can't ask her to do this." Isabelle cuts in. "She doesn't know what she's facing. She's not prepared."
"If anyone can tell me another way to recover my memories and still get the answers we need, I'm listening." Everyone stayed silent, Charlotte glanced around at everyone, adjusting her glasses to stay on her nose when it slipped. How could this idea even be thought of? She didn't want her best friend to get hurt or worse die for this. "That settles it."
"See? I told you she's one of us." Jace says to Alec, slapping his chest and walking away. Clary follows Jace keeping an eye on Alec who keeps eye contact. Charlotte was the third to leave and followed Clary.
"Shotgun!" She yelled, running forward.
"That she'll run for." Simon sighs out rolling his eyes, he continues to walk forward to catch up with his sister when Isabelle pulls him back with her arm wrapped around his.
---
Approaching underneath the bridge, in the eerie dark, Charlotte shuddered. It looked like a place they'd find a dead body on the documentaries she watch that'd make her deathly terrified to go anywhere alone.
The only light came from the fires that surrounded the area. "Yeah this place isn't creepy. Not at all." Simon says out loud.
"Don't tell me you're afraid," Isabelle chuckles.
Simon scoffs, "Are you kidding me? I was born afraid which sounds a lot better in my head." Charlotte exhales shaking her head at her brother's sudden stupidity.
"Everything you say sounds better in your head." She tells her twin. Isabelle chuckles at the twins antics as Alec moved forward.
"Let's check it out."
"Wait here a minute," Jace says to Clary, "I wanna see if it's safe." Charlotte looks suspiciously at Jace and then to her best friend.
"Looks like you got yourself a blonde shadowhunter bodyguard." Charlotte gasps. "The Bodyguard." Clary shakes her head with a bit of laughter.
"Why are we doing this?" Simon asks Clary. "We don't even know these people."
"Simon, they're Clary's best bet at finding her memories and keeping her safe from the demons and that Valentine guy." Charlotte tries to explain to her brother.
"I just wish my mother trusted me enough to tell me about all this." Clary admitted. Simon looks at the two, as if they were deranged. "What? What's wrong?" She asks Simon.
"How are you two not ultra freaked out by all this?" Charlotte wanted to admit once again she was freaked out, scream and hyperventilate over the possibilities of failure, but she couldn't in front of Clary. She needed to be the rock her best friend needed to lean on.
"I guess I just always felt like there was something missing. Some void I couldn't quite explain. Things are finally starting to make sense. But none of it's gonna matter unless I get my mom back."
"Well this would make for a great novel." Charlotte just said.
"Then let's do that." Simon says looking at Clary, love evident in his eyes. Charlotte pitied her twin for the look he gave Clary, she didn't think it would ever be requited. He then stopped for a second and said, "Finding your mom, not Charlotte's novel."
"Clary, come on. It's all clear." Charlotte hears Jace say.
"Let's go." Clary tells the twins, they follow her until she continues forward with Jace at her side. Simon started to stray back with a look of disappointment on his face.
"Simon," Charlotte starts, "you either have to say something or accept what Clary wants. I don't want to see you like this for the rest of your life. You deserve better." Simon looked down at his sister and sighed.
"I don't know what you're talking about Charlie."
---
As they approach the opening, a skeleton was there to greet them. "Dramatic much. Has no one done any spring cleaning in centuries?"
"Please be quiet." Alec says.
"You deal with your issues your way, I deal with them my way, buddy."
"I can do this." Clary sighs.
"Yeah you can. You're Clary freakin' Fray. You can do anything." Simon tries to encourage Clary. He then walks first but is stopped by Jace.
"Alright, hold up."
"Surprise, surprise. No mundanes allowed, just like in the training room, right? Wrong!"
"Simon calm down, this place clearly isn't meant for us."
"Charlie, we've seen every horror movie ever made and the funny best friend who gets left behind- dead man."
"You're not that funny. If anything Charlotte's the dead man." Jace says to antagonize Simon. "But by all means go ahead." Simon sits still before trying to go. "Of course, the minute you enter, you'll die."
Simon turns around to face Jace. "Problem is, now I don't trust you."
"He's not lying." Alec defends Jace.
"Now. He was before." Isabelle adds for clarification.
"The rune energy in the City of Bones will kill any mundane who dares to enter so, please."
"Yeah, Simon stay here with me. I'm not trying to be the funny best friend who dies. I'm not trying to take that role."
"The brothers creep me out. I'll mind the mundanes." Izzy says with a light hearted sigh.
"Your sacrifice is noted, Izzy."
"Hey!" Charlotte yells.
"Talk about sacrifice, I'm missing a financial analysis class." Simon says towards Clary, making both shadowhunter and mundane roll their eyes.
"Yes, Simon, your class is the topic at hand right now. I told you to take the other class, not this one."
"I can't be here anymore, so Jace I'm gonna mind the perimeter."
Clary looks towards her mundane friends. "I don't wanna leave you two."
"Go be a badass shadowhunter, alright? Go get your memories back. Go save your mother."
"Yeah we'll be be fine. This is way more important, you'll be out here before you know it. We'll be right here." Charlotte adds on.
"Guarding the entrance to hell."
"Way to encourage her, Si."
Clary hugged both her friends tightly, feeling their embrace around her. "Clary, you don't keep the Silent Brothers waiting." Jace interrupts.
"Yeah, go. Don't let us hold you back." Charlotte says pushing her friend lightly.
"You got this." Simon whispers to Clary.
Clary walks away from the twins to the boy she met just recently staying close by his side to go into the entrance. "They're getting to be quite the team. Amusing." Isabelle mused, leaning close to Simon.
"No, not really."
"I should have went to bother Alec at the perimeter." Charlotte sighed out.
--
"So is cracking someone's mind supposed to take this long? Maybe we or you should go check?" Simon asks the shadowhunters at the fire.
Charlotte groaned out leaning her head against her hands and then leaving them to go back to the fire. "Please one of you do something to him. Or I'm going to hit him." Simon rolled his eyes at his impatient sister who got tired of his babbling.
"Jace has it covered."
Isabelle chuckles"Take my word for it. The Silent Brothers are quite unpleasant."
"That's not helping. Not at all."
"You'll make him worse. Simon, I'm gonna punch you, if you don't stop, please." But she was too late, Simon was simoning, as she would call it.
"What if Clary can't handle the Brothers? What does that-" Simon stammers when he is cut off by Alec.
"It literally never stops talking."
"That my dears is Simon simoning." She takes her fist and punches him in the arm harshly. "18 years. Have fun, the beginning isn't the worst."
"Is he always this charming? As much as my sister?"
"Firstborn. Heavy is the head that wears the crown."
"Relatable." Charlotte nods her head in acceptance. Alec must have to deal with a lot, I'd be wanting to be snarky with others too, Charlotte thought.
"Mmm. I feel his pain."
"Yeah right." Charlotte scoffs.
"Mother wants me to be a CPA." Isabelle hums lightly and steps towards him.
"And you? What do you want?"
"To not be in this conversation now." Charlotte mutters. She wanted to be there for her friend but she was tired and spent the night running and stressing for Clary.
"Well I'm in a band," Simon stutters out.
"Yeah? What type of music? Let me guess. Indie rock?"
Simon laughs nervously. "Yeah."
"Got anything on your phone?" She chuckles.
"I do. We recorded our last set. We killed. It's-" He cuts himself off to think when he remembers. "I left my phone in the van." He chuckles.
"Let's go get it." The two walk off when Alec's voice stops them. Well, stops Izzy who grabs Simon.
"Where is it going?"
"We'll be back." She pauses and asks when her brother continues to stare at her, "What? He passes the time."
"I can hear you guys, you know." The two continue walking when Charlotte calls out for her brother.
"Si, get my book!" She could feel the rolling of Simon's eyes and shrugged. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't.
She stood next to Alec who looked anywhere but her. "She sounds like she's gonna eat my brother." She pauses, "She can take him. Let him get back my book though." Alec sighs pinching the bridge of his nose. "Hey, I'm better company than my brother at least."
Alec sat in silence until he then spoke, "Yeah." Charlotte smiled in victory, at least the shadowhunter agreed she was the Lewis. Of course, she kids. She loves her brother, no matter what.
After many minutes have past Charlotte sighed. "I'm gonna go check on Simon and Isabelle. I want my book."
"Wait." Alec stopped her. He stood there silently for a moment with his hand outstretched. "Stay here." He walked off, weapon in hand making Charlotte confused and scared. What did he hear or see?
She stood there by the fire looking all around. It was safe right? She wondered. She started walking towards the noise, maybe it was Izzy and Simon.
"Alec?" She called out quietly, too scared to speak up. She walked further and then stopped suddenly feeling something on her shoulder. She didn't have the chance to turn back when she felt something cold hit her head and it was dark.
_
Alec came back to the fires that surrounded the entrance and looked around desperately in search of the pesky mundane. He couldn't have lost her. Maybe she ran off to her mundie brother and Izzy. He thought to reassure himself. He didn't have time to go to the van when he saw the blazing red head run out.
"What happened? What did you find out?" Alec asks out of curiosity and to hide his fear of losing the mundane. Jace could see right through it but decided not to say anything, the news was more important.
"Valentine is Clary's father."
"Wait a minute. You're telling me this girl shows up out of nowhere and she's Valentine's daughter? Did it occur to you that she might be a spy, this might be part of her plan?"
"That's enough Alec." Jace orders.
"Do you think I planned for my mom to be kidnapped?" Clary cries out. "Or.. or for Dot to be taken, or to have a giant sword dangle over my head and find out that my father is one of the most dangerous people in the world? Really?" Her breath trembles, trying to calm herself. She wanted to have her friends there, Charlotte would be there to reason and comfort her and Simon would be there to comfort and joke. "Where's Simon and Charlotte?" She asks.
Isabelle runs forward while Alec stays quiet suddenly, Jace looks at him with furrowed brows, he wouldn't be so silent about the mundanes.
"I told him to stay in the van." Izzy says out of breath.
"Charlotte wasn't with you?" Alec asks with wide eyes, his reassuring thoughts were long gone.
"I've searched everywhere."
"They're gone?"
"I can't find Simon. I didn't know where Charlotte was."
Alec tried to hide his disappointment in himself by sounding uncaring for the mundane, "Charlotte must have went off to the van and got lost."
"You were supposed to protect them!" Clary yells at the siblings. She rushes forward yelling both of the twins names.
"Ugh, these mundanes are killing me." Jace mutters under his breath as he chases after Clary.
"Simon, Charlotte!" Clary yells approaching the van. "No."
"Are that the mundanes names?" They hear a voice yell. They turn around and look up towards the sound of the voice to see two people holding onto the two teens. "I'm afraid Simon and Charlotte are coming with us." The man continues as he holds onto Charlotte, her past out figure in his arms while Simon dangled upside down in the woman's grasp.
"No!" Clary yelled out. "They're not apart of this." She is held back by Jace who continues to speak calmly for her.
"And it will be my pleasure to kill you unless you return them."
"Careful. We'd be violating the Accords." Alec reminded Jace.
"I'm afraid your sidekick's quite right. The night children have broken no laws. We're negotiating. The mundanes unharmed in exchange for the Mortal Cup. And the clock is ticking. Tick tock people." The man and woman run off without a trace with Simon and Charlotte with them leaving Clary to cry out for her mundane best friends, fearing for their lives.
