Raising Hell

The memories of the Hotel DuMort still were able to wrap themselves around Charlotte's mind. Every time she thought about something else it was like it seeped in. The smell of blood on her lips, the look of sadness in a vampire's eyes. Yet, she couldn't piece it all together. The puzzle of what happened that night was no where near solved by the rambunctious girl.

Just as Charlotte was haunted by memories, so was her shadowhunter friend, Clary. Charlotte watched as the red head tossed and turned, her locks falling into her face.

"Should I wake her up?" Simon asks with uncertainty.

"Simon, No. Don't they say not to wake people when they're having nightmares?"

"I thought that was sleepwalking."

"I don't know." As the siblings bickered Clary shot up from her bed.

"Hey, it's okay. I'm here. You're safe." Simon says to her.

"Jace?" Clary sighed out in relief.

"What?" Charlotte and Simon ask in unison.

"Are you alright? You still seem kind of freaked." Simon continues.

Clary exhales and shakes her head as if realizing the twins were really in her room.

"Simon. Charlie."

"I got you. You're okay."

"Must have been one hell of a nightmare," Charlotte jokes, "can relate." She lightly nods and sighs thinking about the nightmares that plagued her.

"You have no idea. I was strapped to this piece of furniture and my mom was there. She kept telling this guy to protect me but then he reaches his hand out into my skull and ripped out my brain."

"Well that's a lot worse than mine, jeez Clary."

"Hello, Freddy Krueger."

"Tell me about it." Clary runs her hand through her hair and looks at the twins who she recently saved from the vampires. Simon looked like he was getting over it but she could tell Charlotte would continue to think about it even if she was physically fine. "What are you two doing here anyway? Shouldn't you be in the infirmary?"

"Uh, I just really needed to see you. And Charlie was up already so she tagged along." Simon would question his sister about her nightmares later but kept quiet until they would be alone. Charlotte came over and sat on the bed with her brother and friend. Oh, how she would have liked to sleep even if in an unfamiliar place but even with her heavy eyes, she couldn't close them for long.

"I am so sorry that my messed up life put your in danger. Charlie got hurt. Charlie I'm so sorry."

"It's fine, don't worry, Clary."

"And if you got hurt, Simon I couldn't live with myself. You two are all I've got left."

"Don't get me wrong, I'm totally grateful that your friends got us out before the vampires drained us like a Big Gulp." Clary gave a small chuckle as Charlotte just looked down at the bed. She started to play with the sheets that were on Clary's new bed, nothing like her old ones from her home like at their sleepovers. In the sheets here, Charlotte saw faces and memories.

She couldn't get Raphael's look out of her mind, the stranger and Camille walking up to her like prey. She would be extremely thankful to the shadowhunters who saved their lives before anything could seriously happen to either of the Lewis twins. "But how well do you know this Jace guy? Can you trust him?"

"Seriously, Simon." Charlotte sighed out in anger, bringing up her head to face her brother. "He just saved our lives he didn't have to do that."

Clary who had no idea of his real reason for questioning Jace answered honestly. "I think so. I mean he saved my life... and both of yours, Charlie's right."

"True." Simon replies, "but I was thinking,"

"That's never good." Charlotte quips.

"Shut up, Charlie." Simon chuckles out. He turns back to Clary more serious to give his idea. "all of this craziness started the minute you bumped into him at Pandemonium. You think that's just a coincidence?"

"Honestly, I don't even know what to think anymore. All I know is I have to get my memories back. I need to know who I really am. Maybe... Maybe I saw where my mom hid the Cup, and... and if I could just remember I could save her. I just, I wanna put it all behind me. But I don't know this world."

"Well you're learning, Clary. Obviously you're meant to be in it. It'll take time." Charlotte tries to cheer the girl up.

"I don't even know where to start looking, I'm... I'm just lost."

"Hey. Okay. Look, start with what we know, okay? We know that dreams are remnants of memories."

"Right."

"You saw your mom in the nightmare," Charlotte continues for Simon.

"Before the guy was reaching into your brain."

"Yeah, she... she called him Magnus." The name sounded so familiar to Charlotte. As if she heard it recently but just couldn't remember through all the fog of the night. Then some of the memories flooded in. Camille had said the man's name. Magnus Bane. Could they have been the same person? Charlotte thought to herself. Right before Camille took her time with Charlotte she cursed the man for something.

"Magnus Bane?" Charlotte asks the girl who sat in her own confusion over the dream.

"Maybe. Why, how do you know that name?"

"Camille, the vampire knows him. She was mad and cursed his name when Simon said someone took your memories." Charlotte then explained.

"Oh my god. Charlotte! Simon! You guys are amazing. You've just... you've given me my first solid lead."

"We did?" Simon asks.

"Yeah." Clary says as she jumps out of bed.

"Well technically me. Simon just told the hot vampire everything." Charlotte says as Simon glares at her. The girl just laughs and pushes her brother. "Well it's true, you made out and everything." She says. The twins turn to Clary who was getting ready.

"Wait where are you going?" Simon asks her.

"I have to find Jace and tell him about Magnus Bane. What would I do without you?" Clary then runs off to find Jace, leaving the twins in her temporary room.

"Really? Again? I'm such an idiot." Simon says to himself.

"Yeah you are. You really can't expect her to drop this guy just because you say so. You're letting your feelings for her mess with you." Charlotte tells him.

Simon sighs and faces away from his sister. He didn't want to be vulnerable to his sister about the girl he liked, but Charlotte could see right through him all the time. Just a look into her eyes and he was like that kid again.

As Charlotte kept staring at her brother she noticed how he stared at the mirror in terror. "Oh god." He cries out.

"Simon, what's wrong?" She asks. She stands behind him and puts a hand on his shoulder, while he looks at her with the same amount of fear through the mirror. He jumps back and faces her.

"Charlie?"

"Yeah. Si, what happened?" Simon looks back in the mirror and touches his lips once again.

"Nothing. Let's go." He states and leaves the room without another word.

"We were all normal once." Charlotte says to herself thinking about how messed up the three of them were now.

--

"Simon where are you going? We can't just leave."

"Yes we can. We're not prisoners, Charlie. Get your coat." Simon tells Charlotte.

"We aren't prisoners, Simon. That's exactly why we can stay and we shouldn't leave. After what happened at the Hotel DyMort, we're not safe anywhere else."

"What's happening here?" Izzy comes over asking.

"You can't keep us prisoner here. We're going, come on Charlie."

"Simon wants to leave. Get Clary." Charlotte groans out as she rolls her eyes. Her brother had to make things more complicated than it was. Isabelle nodded without a word and left to find Clary while Charlotte tried to convince her brother to stay. "Look Simon, I don't know what makes you want to leave so suddenly, but it's not worth your life. They can protect us here. I don't care if your jealousy towards the hot blonde shadowhunter has your man feelings hurt, I'm not letting you die because of it."

"It's not that Charlotte." Simon sighs out. He looks around and then pulls her closer to the side. "Have you been seeing things, Charlie?"

"What?"

"Have you been seeing things that aren't there?"

"Every waking second thinking about that stupid Hotel." Charlotte states jokingly.

"I'm not messing around. I can't stay here, Charlotte. Come with me." Charlotte looked at her brother with pained eyes. She wanted to be with him, but she wanted to stay, she had too. "I'm leaving Charlotte. You can't stop me." Simon starts to go on his way again throughout the institute.

"Charlie!" She hears and turns back to see the bouncy red curls on Clary. "Does Simon really want to leave?" Charlotte nods. "He can't!"

"That's what I said!" The two girls then keep going to follow Simon.

"Simon, what are you doing?" Clary asks the retreating boy.

"I already told Charlie and Isabelle, they can't keep us prisoner here." He states as he rushes down the stairs.

"Prisoner? Wait, what... Simon!" Clary runs to catch up to the mundane. "Where are you going?!"

"I'm going home, Clary. And Charlotte doesn't realize that we don't belong here. And if you haven't already completely drunk their Kool-Aid like Charlotte has, then you're coming with me."

"You know I can't." Clary tells him determined.

"Yes you can. It's..." He starts to say loudly but quiets down in the large space. "It's not safe here."

"Simon, how can that be?" Charlotte asks.

"In fact, this is the safest place she could possibly be." Jace interrupts with his large arms crossed.

"You don't get to talk to me, Captain America."

"Considering I'm the guy with the weapons, I get to say what I want."

"Did you just threaten him?" Charlotte asks as Simon gets more angry.

"Okay, come at me bro!" Simon yells with his arms wide open.

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah!"

"Hey what is your problem?" Clary screams as she buts in between Simon and Jace.

"He's my problem!" Charlotte rushed to Simon and held him back. "Charlie, he's just like Kirk Duplesse from high school. Do you remember him? Total jerk with the square jaw. Smelled like body spray, always bullying people. Why don't you do your own homework? Just once, yeah?"

"Simon! You're being ridiculous! Stop!"

"I can take care of myself, Clary." He walked off towards the entrance, but stopped and turned back. Clary thought he would come back and be reasonable but only looked at his sister. "Are you coming, Charlie?" Charlotte turned to Clary who stood alone staring at the institute. She knew they both needed her. Charlotte just needed some peace and quiet before she went insane. Maybe she would go back home in a few days when her thoughts settled down. "Guess not."

"Simon!" Charlotte called out for him as he walked out.

"I'm not saving his ass a second time-"

"Really, Jace?" Clary went running while Charlotte stayed still and stared in Jace's direction.

"What's wrong with you Mundie?" Jace asks.

"Nothing." She mutters as she stares at his neck. Her heart beat a bit faster and she went to chase after the two who ran away. Jace follows Charlotte with his eyes, but doesn't question the mundane, just rolls his eyes at the two of them who somehow were the more important thing.

"What's happening?" Charlotte asks as she gets to the front entrance with Simon and Clary.

"I'm telling Simon that if he goes home he's going to risk your family and himself."

"That's why I'll go home. I'll protect them. Come with me, both of you. Please. We can crash at our place. We can figure all this out."

"You have no idea how much I want to go back to the way things were. To be with you two and my mom and-"

"Clary. We've had each other's backs our whole lives. We've never needed anyone. Let us help you. We don't need these people."

"That was high school, Si. This is something else entirely. We don't know these people's worlds. As much as you don't think we can trust them, I think we can and Clary should. It's her choice."

"Charlie's right. I don't know how to explain this, okay? But I think... I think these are my people."

"Message received. Loud and clear." Simon walks out the door leaving Clary to call out for him.

"It's okay, Clary. I think he needs time. I just hope it won't be too late." The two girls watched as Simon went away in the dark. Charlotte wanted to chase after her brother but something held her back. She just hoped Simon didn't hate her forever.

As the shadowhunters and the mundane sat at the table, Hodge pulled up photographs of the one and only Magnus Bane.

"Mangus Bane. He's 300 years old."

"Holy shit." Charlotte mumbles.

"And, as you can see, he's not exactly shied away from the pleasures of every century."

"Heyy I know him!" Charlotte exclaims from her seat, with Clary's legs on her lap from the table. The shadowhunters turn to the girl who pointed at the picture on the screen in surprise.

"You know a warlock?" Jace asks her with a raised brow in doubt.

"Well I didn't say we were best friends. Gosh." Charlotte rolls her eyes at them. " I met him at Pandemonium."

"When did you meet him?"Clary wonders.

"When you were running to catch up to Blondie." Charlie explains. Alec rolls his eyes and turns to his other shadowhunters.

"Why did we allow the mundane in this meeting?" He asks them.

"I quite enjoy having the mundane with us." Izzy chuckles.

"The mundane can hear you, and she will keep her mouth shut. Just made observations."

"His tastes are both exquisite... and quite excessive."

"He looks like the Downworld's David Guetta."

"Nah, not really, you think?" Charlotte wonders as she stares at his pictures through out time. It fascinated her someone could live that long and live such a significant and extravagant life.

"Guetta's already a Downworlder." Isabelle informs the two girls.

"What?!"

"Vampire? Ever seen him in the daylight?" Isabelle continues.

"Oh my god, no wonder why he's been around collaborating for so long." Charlotte says with wide eyes half joking.

"Can you three focus?" Alec asks the girls with a serious face. "This is not a joke."

"Someone needs to get slayed."

"Alec's right. Now, Magnus is one of the most powerful warlocks I've ever known. He has a deep mistrust of Shadowhunters." Hodge explains.

"Well, then why did he help my mom remove my memories?" Clary asks out loud. "Isn't she a shadowhunter?"

"Yes, one of the best. But "help" might not be the most accurate word."

"So you think she paid him to remove her memories?" Charlotte asks. How many times could Jocelyn have this done to Clary? Was it once or more?

"More than likely." Hodge answers the mundane.

"Warlocks usually require payment before they help anyone with anything."

"Word from the Clave is that most of the warlocks have gone into hiding since Valentine began hunting them." There was no way they could get him to come out then when he was the actual one who took Clary's memories, Charlotte thought.

"Valentine must be searching for the warlock, where did Jocelyn-" Hodge's rune starts to sear as he stops in the pain.

"Oh god, what's wrong with him guys?" Charlotte asks in disgust and fear.

"Hodge, your rune. You okay?" Clary asks. In his silence, she continues. "So how do we find Magnus?" Charlotte still stared at the man with a large circle on his neck that seemed to burn him.

"We don't. Magnus finds us."

"How does he find you when literally he's most likely hiding from this Valentine dude?" Charlotte asks.

"We'll set up a meeting, somewhere protected. Lure him out of hiding."

"And I know exactly where we do it." Isabelle speaks up with a smile. She gets up from her spot confidently, and takes Jodge's screen.

She flips through the photos until a poster comes up. "A Downworld rave. Nice, Izzy."

"And where'd you get that?" Alec asks his sister.

"During my surveillance of the Downworlders. From what I hear, Magnus likes to party."

"He'll never go for it. Not with Valentine trying to kill him."

"Of course he will."

"Cause the party is more important than his 300 year old life. For real?" Charlotte says with sarcasm.

"He'll blend in. Hide in plain sight."

"But why?" Charlotte asks again, doubting their plan.

"I don't know, it seems-" Clary starts but is interrupted by Izzy.

"Trust me. If Magnus is coming out of hiding, he's going to one of the biggest parties of the year."

"Never underestimate Magnus' hedonism. Or his greed. Come with me." The group follows Hodge upstairs as he then activates a rune to unlock.

Inside was a necklace that was beautiful even to Charlotte. She wasn't much for extravagance but she could admire jewelry and looks. "Is that real?" Izzy asks Hodge.

"A four karat, unheated Burmese ruby. And this necklace has special meaning to Magnus Bane as it was a gift to his then lover, Camille Belcourt."

"Man, I was just beginning to like this guy. His taste in people is disappointing." Charlotte comments.

"Mundane, please." Jace whispers to her. "Warlock gets around." He then comments.

"Oh but that's so appropriate." Charlotte whispers to Jace who chuckles at her.

"Magnus bought it in 1857 for the price of his London townhouse. Now the jewel is enchanted by a spell that alerts the wearer to the presence of demons." Charlotte thought the necklace was beautiful and the spell was useful for someone you love. The warlock she met briefly spent a fortune on the leech that she had also met.

"It's so beautiful." Isabelle says encaptured by its beauty.

"Magnus has longed to be reunited with the necklace. Offer it to him. He might just take the bait."

"I'll send Magnus a fire message to attend the meeting." Jace tells the group. "We have to get to Magnus before Valentine does."

Charlotte left with Clary and went to Clary's room. Charlotte didn't want to be in the position of staying with the shadowhunters or staying with her brother, but she was. And she was the only one who experienced something the others couldn't. "Charlotte." She hears a voice. But it wasn't Clary who spoke. It was no one.

"Oh god, please don't let me be going crazy." Charlotte whispered to herself.

"What?" Clary asks, not hearing what she said.

"Nothing. Just wondering about that party." Clary chuckles and walks up to her friend.

"You can come if you want, if you feel safer with us. I know how much you hate parties though."

"It could be worse. I could be forced to dance. And interact with more than 10 people." Charlotte says with sarcasm.

A knock came to the door and Jace stood in the doorway. "Isabelle wants to see the two of you." He tells the girls.

"Tell me it's not to try more food." Charlotte begs the blonde who chuckles.

"Definitely not. But you won't like it most likely." With a wink he leaves.

The two girls head to Izzy's room where she has clothes lying around. "Oh no." Charlotte mutters. Please don't be a makeover, Charlotte repeats in her head.

"Jace said you wanted to see us."

"That's right." Isabelle turns and faces the two girls. "What are you wearing to the downworlder party tonight?" She asks.

"Oh so I am going?" Charlotte asks.

"Of course. Got to keep the mundie safe from harm, better with us." She says with a smirk. "So what are you two wearing?"

"I don't know I was thinking of just wearing this." Clary states pointing down to her clothes.

"Ditto." Charlotte points to her friend.

"I don't think so." Izzy says with a laugh as she stared at their clothes. "No Downworlder would be caught dead in that."

"Well it's a good thing I'm not a Downworlder." Charlotte replies to the shadowhunter.

"Plus it's a party, not a poetry slam." Isabelle adds.

"Ouch." Charlotte looks down at her outfit seeing the crop top and mom jeans. It wasn't like she had no style. She just preferred being chill. A chill life, yet here she was now with a very stylish shadowhunter who hunts demons. Not so chill at all, she realizes then.

"Well we don't really have any party clothes with us, so..."

"So you'll have to wear mine, hmm?" Izzy offers with a smile and shoves a dress to Clary before walking away.

"You realize, one of these days you're going to have to tell me where and when."

"Where and when what?" Izzy then asks giving Charlotte a black feathery scarf.

"Where you get your spending money and when are you letting me go to a store?"

"Yeah that's true, do shadowhunters have their own currency?"

"Clary."

"Okay that dress is way too tight." Clary states looking at the dress that hung on Izzy's hand.

"It's stretchy. Put it on." Charlotte chuckles as Izzy turns to her with a smirk.

"And you, pretty mundie, where's the dress I gave you?"

Charlotte's eyes widen a bit as if being caught in lie and shakes her head very obviously. "I have no clue. Oh my! Oh no, it must have been in the van that I no longer can go to. Whatever shall I do. What a shame."

"Nope. Get over here. I got more. You can borrow a dress." Charlotte groans and sits on the bed as Izzy goes through her closet. "Try these." Izzy says to Clary tossing her a pair of heels.

"I don't know, Isabelle. I think I'm more of a jeans and t shirt kinda girl."

"Nope, Fray if I'm forced into a dress you sure as hell are." Charlotte tells her from her spot on the bed.

"Now you, I think I have a nice outfit for you." Izzy heads back to the closet and takes out an olive green dress with an open front. "This color would be perfect for you."

"I do like green." She whispers. "I have no choice do I?"

"Of course you do. The red or the green." Izzy says with a smile as she holds onto another tight dress.

"I love your sense of fashion but I hate you." Charlotte jokes.

"Love you too. Now take one. Just for a night."

Charlotte looked at the dresses and grabbed the green with a sigh. "It better look and fit nicely. I wanna feel like an angel."

"It will be great. And take these heels." Clary steps out finally with the black dress hugging her perfectly.

"Wow, Clary you look great. Well, my turn." Charlotte goes behind the screen and undresses looking at the dress that hung. It wasn't as revealing as the red, so she went with this. Maybe one day she'd be okay with more of those, but for now she thought, she'd stick with this.

"You're so lucky you have a flat chest. I could never wear that without a bra." Izzy jokes.

"Really?"

"Really." Izzy laughs.

Charlotte hears footsteps and the voice of Jace. "Someone's looking badass." He comments on Clary's outfit. Clary turns around and chuckles.

"Oh thanks."

"She cleans up well. And so does our little mundane, wow." Charlotte comes out with her hair still unkept and the dress on. Like Clary, it fit her well, and was a perfect fit for her. "Maybe I should curl your hair. I think I'm going to straighten mine." Isabelle says as she plays with the girl's hair.

"Whatever you think, you're the boss. I feel like I am not meant for this dress."

"Oh honey, this dress was meant for you though. I'll get back to you. I'm gonna go see Alec. He never knows what to wear to these parties either." Izzy leaves with a smirk and struts out leaving Charlotte with the pair.

"You know, I'm gonna go find another mirror to see how this looks." Charlotte walks out with less of a strut and more of a jog in the heels Izzy gave her to leave her friend with the handsome shadowhunter. Charlotte walked around the halls and came to the room Clary was staying in, the only other room she felt comfortable in and sat on the bed.

She looked in the mirror that Simon had freaked out in front of before his breakdown in the institute. But she had to take a double take as she saw something coming from her lip down the middle of her chin. "What the hell?" She stepped forward and put a hand on the mirror. She touched her own chin and tried to wipe the substance. "Blood?" Too focused on the blood that she had she didn't notice the pale ish figure that approached.

"Charlie." Charlotte turned around with a jump to see Izzy standing in the doorway. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah I'm fine." She looked back in the mirror and saw the blood was gone as was the impending feeling of doom. "You said you wanted to curl my hair?"

"Yes!" Charlotte couldn't shake the feeling that something between her and her brother was happening, yet couldn't tell what it was.
