The Soft Traveling
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
"Again, does everyone have the blueprints memorized?" Nick questioned in a quieter voice. He didn't want them talking loud either around or in the subway tunnels. Everyone nodded their heads, and he took a moment before he nodded back in response. The eldest male of the group doubted that his teammates were lying to him since they knew how serious he took such matters, but he did like to double check and make sure that no one was holding out on him. It was crucial for their survival.
"And, remember," his brown optics met each of their gazes one by one, "don't separate from the group at all. The only time that happens is if it's absolutely necessary to do so." He focused in on Chris. "You have the main blueprints; don't lose them." She gave a firm nod. "If there are changes to the tunnels down there, we'll need to mark where they are on that map so that we don't get confused if things get out of hand down there." A slightly frustrated sigh parted from him. "I wish that we could've made copies so that all of us could have them, but the archive office wouldn't allow it. We only can borrow them."
Nick reached into his grey backpack and pulled out sticky notes and pencils. "We each have a set of these in our backpacks. Make notes about changes in the tunnels where you see them, and we'll add the structural changes to the blueprints." He placed the items back into his pack, and he would've gone over all of the information in the room, but he wanted to remind everyone closer to the area in case anyone wanted to back out at the last moment; he didn't wish for any of his teammates to feel pressured about the case. "There are also notepads to take notes on about what we see and find, but I don't want you getting too distracted by taking notes to put yourself in danger."
Briefly, his eyes glanced to the stairway under the tree roots before he stared back to all of them. "We don't know what we're exactly dealing with here, and we need to be on alert even when we're taking notes. We'll also be setting up night vision cameras down there to record the area while we're away. Each of us has one." Nick averted his eyes momentarily to Ren and Chris before he focused on all of his teammates. "We'll be placing the cameras in the spots where the murderer died and where some of the suicide victims killed themselves. Those probably will be the most active areas if we're dealing with the ghosts of them." Uncertainty did enter his strict stare. "But, the stolen objects ... Well, we still don't know what to make about them."
"Sorry that I couldn't find more on them," Chris mentioned, breaking her gaze from him and staring down to her black combat boots.
Shaking his head, Nick responded, "It's not your fault, Chris." Ren held a similar expression. "Or, yours, Ren." He gave them both a reassuring smile. "Besides the basic info on the items, the rest of it was made secret. That probably was because they didn't want people searching for Ms. Clarence and this being just to take her jewelry and lockbox. With our lack of information on the subject, it just means that we need to be more cautious down there."
Giving them all one last glance over, he inspected to see if anyone actually did want to wish to head back to the hotel room, but no one budged. He gave a firm nod. "Okay, only one of us will have a flashlight on at a time to conserve battery power, and we're staying close together. Everyone keep your ears open and tell the rest of us to stop if you hear something suspicious." Nick moved his attention to Ren. "You'll be in the back, and I want you to have your flashlight on. That way if you need to check behind us, you can, and we won't have to switch flashlights or have multiple on at once." The male's brown eyes switched over to Chris. "You'll be standing to his left so that you still can see the blueprints well enough down there."
When he diverted his optics to Deidre, she nodded and replied, "I'll be the main person taking notes since I'll be to Ren's right and also be closer to the flashlight. The rest of us will take notes when we're all stopped and not moving."
"Right, and I'll be holding onto the night vision camera so that we can see ahead of us better without having to switch on the flashlight at full power. We might also catch something, like an orb or another video camera anomaly, if we're truly dealing with ghosts." Nick turned his back to all of them. "Let's get going." He crouched before he got on all fours and crawled under the tree roots. The rest of the team followed after him: Chris, Deidre and Ren last.
It wasn't until they were part way down the stairs that all of them could stand to their full heights. Nick stretched his back, and he heard a very light pop in the process. Thankfully, the sound didn't echo. As they descended down into the darkness, though, Ren switched on the flashlight to a low power that also wasn't too low that they couldn't see well. Since the stairwell was wide enough, they formed their diamond-like formation, and they were huddled close together so that their shoulders almost were touching each other.
Chips of cement did break off under the weight of their feet and tumble down the rest of the steps. The slight sound caused Deidre to pause until Nick reassured her that it was nothing to worry about. He even saw a few of the pieces falling down the stairs with the camera and light from behind him. Moving the camera, he noted a few spider webs in the high corners of the ceiling, but there wasn't anything else of interest on the stairs besides dirt and dust.
Reaching the bottom of the steps, Chris mentioned, "We're heading left first, right? That should lead us to the location of the tracks where the murderer was killed." Nick nodded and began to head that way. Ren shone the flashlight ahead, and they noted the empty tunnel leading over to that subway platform.
The floors were all cement, but there were some decorative tiles on the sides of the walls, which were white and mint green. None of the tiles shone with a freshness of color. Rather, they were caked with dust and dirt, and they were cracked beyond repair. It was a surprise that there were pieces of the tiles still left in the walls. Along the edges of the walls, there were piles of debris. Chipped tile pieces, decaying garbage from years past and dead insects. In the center of the hall, some of the debris was scattered about, but it almost was like someone swept the paths of it mostly.
With careful steps, they advanced forward, and a live spider skittered across the floor in front of them before it seemingly raced for the stairs. Nick didn't blame the creature. The place was less than inviting, and the spider most likely thought that they were crazy for venturing deeper into the location.
Along some of the walls was graffiti, but it had worn with age, making most of it illegible. And, it was evident that no one had come into the subway to design new graffiti on the walls. The writings and designs on the walls, however, nearly were forgotten when a sound echoed through the tunnel and came from behind them. All of them froze, and Ren shone the flashlight's beam back where they had come from. It had sounded like someone had thrown a large rock, but nothing new was in view of the light.
They continued to stare in that direction until they were certain that things were quiet again. None of them said a word, but there was the faint noise of Deidre writing notes down about what just happened and where it took place in the tunnels. "Let's keep moving," Nick voiced, his voice just audible. He turned back around, and their steps filled the air again.
As they neared platform one, they all began to smell something horrid in the air. It was as though they had walked into a rancid meat locker. Chris covered her nose with her left hand and held the papers with her right. "Uhh, it's terrible," she muttered, wanting to cough but also not wishing to create too much noise. "Do you think this means that the ghost is nearby or ..." she trailed off since she knew what another possible explanation was.
"Yes, it could be," Nick answered as he took slower steps forward. "With the amount of disuse of this tunnel, it'd be odd for it to have this smell unless some animal came in and got stuck somehow. Or ..." He took a deep breath in before he exhaled. "Or, we might be dealing with a demon, which would explain the trances more than that of a ghost. And, this smell is often more associated with them than a ghost."
Deidre wrote down the conversation as well as the exact description of the smell even though she was tempted to cover her nose with the collar of her blue jacket. "It could be something else, though," she remarked as she wrote, but her hands shook slightly. "It might be ... one of the missing people."
"But, they still might be alive. There have been reports of possessed individuals giving off the same smell," Ren noted, dimming the flashlight just a little bit.
"If that's the case, then we need to keep our distance and head back for the entrance. We'll have our answer, then, and we'll need to call in more qualified help," Nick responded as they neared the corner, which turned onto platform one. The smell only grew stronger, and all of their nerves were on edge.
Finally coming around the corner, the four of them stopped. Ren shone the flashlight ahead a bit while Nick viewed the area with the camera. It was hard to see anything with where they were, and they took cautious steps forward. Nick moved the camera to his left and towards the tracks where Tonya Aspin had been killed by one of the trains. On the tracks, he saw what looked like an old metal chair and electrical cables, and a heavy pit formed in his stomach.
