Left nails tapping against the desk, the creature smirked a little. Given Nick's past and the information in that paragraph, whatever case his team and he had taken up was major. They, technically, still were taking requests, but most people probably wouldn't mail Nick's team the information unless it was exceptionally dire, which most likely had been the intent of their message. Even then, more of those requests would be dwindled out by the fact that Nick and his team probably wouldn't read the mailed letters until several days or weeks after they had been sent in. That way, his team and he could focus almost entirely on whatever case they had agreed upon in Delain.
A bit of doubt did enter the creature's head, however. Nick never wanted to encounter another creature. After the tunnels, he clearly was done, yet he had aided (f/n) a few months back. Then again, he had known (f/n) and had been stuck in the amusement park with her. The creature sighed in annoyance. Just thinking about that incident again pissed him off, but after a few more breaths, he managed to cool himself down and shove it aside.
Right now, all that mattered was that Nick was working on something massive. Callest or not, it was worth investigating. In the past, the only reason anyone ever was certain of him being the one to kill those in the tunnels centered on the fact that he had utilized the characteristic five-puncture wound. He stopped that after the tunnels, and he doubted that Callest left a signature mark behind. So, Nick might have no suspicion that another creature was involved if there even was one in the first place.
Regardless, the creature opened a new tab and typed in the town and state's name and news stories. The first result mentioned something about a winter festival in the town and how businesses already were placing bright and wintry decorations on and around the main street. A festival sounded like fun since he never had been to one, but he didn't wish to go unless his pink flower was with him. Even then, he would have to keep his left hand in a pocket at all times and make sure that he didn't appear too suspicious. Honestly, it would be too much of a risk, and he'd rather not jeopardize everything to have a few hours of possible new fun.
Besides, his partner would have to be careful too in case anyone recognized her, and he suspected that ... she might need a long recovery time after he found her. A festival would be out of the question. And even if she hated every moment of it, he would nurse her back to health since that was more important than their arguments.
Moving past the festival, he scrolled down and found a few more news stories that weren't really worth his time. It wasn't until the second page on the search engine that he discovered something promising: a news report about missing persons in the area. He clicked on the link and loaded up the text before his eyes began to scan over the information.
Following the missing case of Erika Clarence, two other people have been reported missing in the Delain area. The time between the first person, Ms. Clarence, and the second, William Gradeson, was about two month's time. Ms. Clarence is a fifty-year-old woman with a daughter of twenty-seven. Her daughter reported that with the disappearance of her mother, a few odd items around the house went missing too: apples and underwear from the daughter's room. But, there also were other, more valuable things taken from the home: her mother's gold jewelry and lockbox. Ms. Clarence and her daughter lived on the outskirts of Delain in a small one-story home.
William Gradeson, nineteen, had been living in the middle of the town in one of its apartment complexes. He just had moved to the town, and he apparently was living under a false last name. It's unclear what else he had been lying about because of that. No one knows if anything was taken from his apartment or not, but there were moving boxes left untouched.
The third missing person, Daisy Calfisher, twenty-eight, was reported in after a few days of Mr. Gradeson. She was living alone in a home she just bought out of the town and close to the next one over, Stream Valley. It's unclear if anything was stolen from her home. And, her job was found out to be a remote software engineer for a large tech company, so no one in the area really could say they knew much about her.
Given the nature of the three cases, it's hard to say what caused their disappearances, with the exception of Mr. Gradeson, who most likely ditched town. The other two, that's not as likely, but there's no evidence to indicate that any of the individuals were abducted. Ms. Clarence's daughter reports no suspicious activity around their residence before her mother's disappearance, and Ms. Calfisher's work reported no odd behavior from their employee.
Please keep your eyes out for any of these individuals. Their descriptions are below. Thank you.
Admittedly, he had been hoping that the article would mention Nick's arrival to the town, but it made sense that the report didn't include them. It was unlikely that a town openly would admit that they called in paranormal investigators, and there was the chance that the town hadn't brought them in. Someone else could've, and they probably had more accurate details about what was occurring, but they were too scared to talk, which pointed more towards suspicious activity in the area.
The fact that the article, even though written quite recently, was on the second page of results spoke to something odd too. It was as though the town was trying to hide the missing person reports and cloud people's eyes with the more exciting events. Then again, that made sense too since the town might gain a bad reputation if such events came to public light more. Either that or it would grow popular like (f/n)'s town and attract quite a bit of people to solve the case; however, that might only happen if more of the possible disturbing facts were revealed. Needless to say, he had to learn more on the missing person reports.
Switching his search to "Missing Persons in Delain, Irina," he scrolled through more results. Most of them were similar to the first report he read, but some were older and only discussed Ms. Clarence. Nothing strange joined the collection of articles for the first several pages. When he reached page seven, he stumbled across something peculiar. It was a blog, and the title was simple and pointed out its message bluntly, "Missing Persons, Lies." There was no indication on the brief description of the page whether or not the writer was referring to the cases in Delain or not, but he clicked on it regardless.
They're dead. I know it! Have all of you been hearing about Ms. Clarence, Mr. Gradeson and Ms. Calfisher? Well, they're not missing; that's for sure. Like I said, they're dead. They're worse than dead. I know what happened to them, but none of the officials will believe me. They'll throw me into the nuthouse before I get a sentence out.
But, I'll tell you all here. The officials never will find this piece. Or, they'll ignore it and go on about that winter festival while dead people are polluting the outskirts of town. They all went on the old road; they were lured there, likes flies to honey. A ghost was guiding them at night, and they didn't speak a word the whole time. It was like they were in a trance or something.
There's that old subway on the old road, but that thing caved in years ago, buried underground. Trees were even planted over the thing. So, where did they go? I say that they're dead. Walking like that with that ghost thing. No way, they'd be alive.
It ended there, and there were no comments on the post. A location that wouldn't easily be compromised, an abandoned subway under trees certainly fit that description. Three missing people following a shadow and looking out of it, that was curious too. Then again, the story could be complete lunacy, but it might be what called out Nick and his crew. The owner of the blog might've contacted them, but the owner didn't have an actual name, just the title of the person's blog. There was no phone number, email or address attached either to contact the owner; no social media links were available too.
If Nick did believe that a ghost was involved, it made sense why he would take the case. But, the creature had a feeling that it wasn't a ghost, but that might just be him hoping for the ghost to be Callest. He desperately wanted to find (f/n), so his mind might be making connections that weren't there, but he didn't wish to drop this discovery either. The writer clarified that he saw the ghost with them at night, so the writer might've mistaken their trance-like state. In actuality, they could've been drugged or knocked out; the writer might've just seen the situation wrong, and the people might've been dragged across the road instead. It was a slim assumption, but it still was possible.
And, their species did have nearly white hair and a deathly pale complexion. In the darkness, that could be mistaken for being one of those classic ghosts he had seen around the human holiday Halloween. Regardless of whether it was a long stretch or not, he would show her parents all of the information and get their opinion on the matter. If they thought the same as him, he might just go check out the abandoned subway entrance before they researched all other possible locations.
