The Dire Backpack
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
As she distanced herself from the locked door, her steps never slowed down. Up ahead was platform four, and she would have to take a right to head back to the entrance. That was all she had to do. Then, she could get help to rescue Deidre if she ... No, she still was alive; she had to be. Chris frowned heavily and tried not to let any tears slip. Once they did, she wouldn't be able to stop, and she would make herself too vulnerable in the situation. She had to concentrate on her task and not let her concern for her friend slow her down. The longer it took her to leave, the longer it took to retrieve aid for her friend.
But, there was the nagging feeling that Nick and Ren might be in trouble too. If they didn't meet her at the entrance, she ... Well, she really hoped that didn't happen. They had to be there. Otherwise, she might seem like a madwoman if she attempted to find help in town. With three of them, they would be more believable, and she would know that two of her other friends would be safe.
Unfortunately, her hope to find them at the entrance waiting diminished when she heard a violent slam and banging echoing behind her. There were no doors back that way unless ... Mentally, she cursed. A passage leading to gate two and platform three was back there, and there was a door leading to those two areas. That had to be the slamming sound, or it came from them closing and locking the bathroom door on platform two. Another option consisted of them being ... thrown around like ragdolls.
She grimaced at the thought, and her mind pictured both Ren and Nick bags of broken bones and ruptured organs. Her steps slowed, and she had to place her right hand on the dirtied, chipped wall to stabilize herself. Chris bent forward a bit and forced herself not to vomit. It wasn't the time for that, but that mental image disturbed her to no end. The fact that Deidre might be in a similar position only worsened it.
Since the slam and banging stopped, however, she hoped that meant that her friends still were alive and not killed in some gore-filled fashion. The creature, though, had mentioned that he had wished to talk to Nick, so he had a good chance of being alive ... right? As for Ren and Deidre, she didn't want to dwell on it anymore, but her mind refused to give her peace on the matter. It kept returning to their possible deaths as if it was a sadistic record player on repeat.
"Please be alright, all of you," she muttered to herself before she pushed herself off of the wall and continued down the hall to platform four. Nearing the platform, however, she noted something odd. She held up her flashlight and turned the beam on just a bit higher. It wasn't the creature, thankfully, but it definitely wasn't supposed to be there. Her steps slowed to a stop again, and her flashlight shone over the metal gate that blocked the door to the platform.
Listening for any footsteps and hearing none, she pulled out her map and drew marks on it for where the places were blocked, and her stomach tightened. She was sealed in. Ren had the bolt cutters, so she couldn't get through the gate, which was frustrating since the door on the other side of it was wide open. It was as though the creature was teasing her, and she recalled that the other one from Cankerfell liked to tease his victims too.
Shining the light back over the gate, she noted the light fixture just above the open door. It was peculiar and probably had been installed to add a bit of decoration to the dreary subway. The fixture was in the shape of a blooming flower, and the stem had a hook on it. Barely, she noted that there was an old piece of cut rope around the top, which made a memory click in her head. That fixture had been the cause of multiple suicides. If they didn't know about the creature roaming the subway, they would've placed a camera here for ghosts, but she figured that she still could place a camera in a hidden spot to retrieve later footage of the creature. Such film would be useful if they made it out alive and encountered the one from Cankerfell or the creature in the subway again; it would help with any creature for that matter.
Taking out her camera, she set it in the broken fire extinguisher case. Carefully, she moved the remaining glass around the camera as well as some debris from the ground to hide the device. It might still be too obvious, but the box was filled with dust and chips of tiling already, so the creature might not spot it even if that chance was slim. With the device placed, she stared back to the map and examined it more.
Back towards the door leading to platform two, there was another hallway to her left. Down it was the employee break room and time clock as well as a staff bathroom. Those rooms were her only option out of the current hallway. If they had a chair or stool of some sort, she could use that item to climb back over the door and jump down back onto platform two. Should she not be able to find such an item ... Chris gulped; that would be a major issue. Her only way out, then, would be for the creature to unlock the door or for her teammates to retrieve the keys off of the creature, which she didn't think likely.
Ultimately, it was going to take her longer to reach the entrance than planned, but she still had to try even if she couldn't race straight to her destination anymore. Chris breathed out a quiet sigh to calm her nerves before she headed towards the staff hallway. She was running again since she didn't hear the creature around. Even if he was, he probably already knew her location. In fact if Ren and Nick had gone towards platform three, the creature might have all three of them in cages. Almost, she was tempted to groan; they had fallen right into his hands.
"Sh*t," she mumbled as she made it to the staff hallway. If she wasn't scared out of her wits and stood a chance against him, she probably would curse him out to his face, but she had a feeling that only would increase the likelihood of her not surviving the day. That thought reminded her that she had no idea what time it was. Nick and Deidre were the only two with watches on, and none of them had their phones on them because they were practically useless because ... of her. Chris wished to curse herself out since she had forgotten their phone chargers back at their home, and she hadn't realized that until all of their phones were dead.
Nearly, she hit her head on the wall for her forgetfulness. If they had working phones, they could've called for help by now. They, technically, could've bought some before heading into the tunnels, or they could've purchased new phones too, one at the very least. Unfortunately, they hadn't since they only realized their phones were dead with no charger earlier that morning, and Nick hadn't wanted to waste the daylight they had, which they all had agreed upon.
Part of her desired to scream at the blog writer who had called them out to examine the subway. Clearly, the writer hadn't seen what was leading the missing people into the subway correctly, and the people probably weren't even following the creature. Most likely, they had been carried or dragged to the subway. The trances had been all wrong, and they now had to pay the price for entering the tunnels. Then again, it had been their choice to enter and put themselves into such a situation, so she couldn't really place the blame on him unless the writer had seen the creature and lied about what he had seen.
Chris couldn't help but groan, and she forced herself to maintain a fast pace again. She pushed those irritating thoughts aside and headed for the bathroom first. Most likely, the chairs, if there were any, would be in the break room, but she didn't wish to miss anything in the bathroom either. The creature might've placed such items in the least expected areas to throw people off.
Constantly, though, she kept her ears tuned into her surroundings. She didn't want to miss one soft footfall of his. If she did, things might end quickly for her. Reaching the bathroom, she cautiously shone the flashlight into the single-person bathroom. The place was ... surprisingly clean. There wasn't much dirt caked on the toilet and sink, and the ground and walls were in disrepair but less so than their counterparts in other areas of the subway. Did the creature use the bathroom for himself?
Stepping further into the room, she noted that there was a hole in the wall where the sink was. It seemed odd given the rest of the bathroom's condition, but she could tell that it was from wear and abandonment. Chris walked over to it and shone the flashlight inside. She was about to face away when she saw nothing, but she stopped when the flashlight hit something peculiar.
Leaning into the hole after checking her surroundings, she pushed aside some of the dirt and debris. Something soft graced her left fingertips, and pale yellow fabric came into view. Her heart skipped a terrified beat since the fabric was attached to a strap. She gulped and pulled the item out. The creature must've dug another hole in the hole. As she stepped back and had the flashlight illuminate the entire object, her eyes widened, and she heard her heartbeat increase: a pale yellow backpack.
It couldn't be hers, could it? A lot of people probably had the same backpack, and one of the three missing people must've owned it ... right? She gulped again, and she placed the item on the floor. Getting on her knees, she unzipped it gradually. Her heart rate sped up more. "Please don't let it be ..." Chris trailed off as she saw the contents; she didn't even need to view all of them to know who the backpack belonged to. There was a giant collection of cash, probably over three thousand still, and there was her ID: (f/n) (l/n).
Dropping the card from her right hand, Chris's jaw dropped, and she blinked in disbelief. Why was (f/n) in the subway? Was she even still alive? She was with a different creature so that question was a valid one. Did that mean that the other creature was looking for her, or had the new one killed the old one? A multitude of questions stormed her mind, and she only could sit there for awhile in pure shock. "Oh no," she whispered as she came across another realization. What if Nick found her dead? Even him just learning that she was in the subway with them would cause him to flip a switch. Maybe, she escaped, though, and she just had to leave her bag. Chris hoped that to be the truth, or their venture into the subway just became all the more complicated, especially if another creature was on his way.
