The Speedier Getaway
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
He heard her quick goodbyes to her parents, and he could tell that both parties wished for a longer goodbye, but all of them knew that things were not in his pink flower's favor. Even with the one hour head start he had given her, he wasn't worried in the slightest. The creature knew where she was going. It was easy. She needed to lose the car, and she needed to get to another location fast, preferably one out of the country. Not to mention that she had the money for that purpose. His lovely little helper would be heading straight to the nearest airport, and with her parent's internet he knew exactly where to cut her off at.
There was the chance that she would suspect that he would understand that logic, but he didn't want to run to all of the different airports to check on her; there wasn't enough time for that. It was one shot, and he'd use time against her too. She was in a rush and required quick transport out, so she likely wouldn't think of going to a farther out airport. Besides for her to arrive at a more distant one, she'd have to take the same road that he was going to cut her off at unless she decided to go off of the road, but he doubted that.
When he finished his packing, he set the duffel bag aside and sighed heavily at the leftover food in the fridge. It was such a waste. He supposed that he could shove the bags of food in his pockets and feast on the way. At least, all of the freezer food fit in the bag. Regardless, he liked the one idea and started to shove his black hoodie with the cold meat. His optics turned back to the fridge when he was done. Most definitely, he would have to clean up the blood that had leaked out of some of the bags. That led him to his cleanup duty; he couldn't leave a speck of him having been there.
Momentarily, he left the room before he returned with all of the needed cleaning supplies. Some, though, were already in the bathroom. His eyes briefly glanced to the clock. Thirty minutes to go. A grin spread on his lips. He wondered how far out she was by that point.
She wondered how far along he was in packing and cleaning. Her hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, and she let the street signs zip by. (F/n) didn't travel too much over the speed limit since she didn't wish to get pulled over. That would waste time exceedingly, and she only had thirty minutes left before he exited her home. The nearest airport still was fifty minutes out. Would she have enough time to board and fly off?
Doubt ate at her heavily. Part of her argued to drive to a farther airport, but she wanted out immediately. If she went to a more distant one, the creature might anticipate that and meet her at one. Or, he might cut her off sooner. He also could realize that she'd be traveling to the closest one, and it was a gamble. The whole deal was.
The longest she had been away from him since the tunnels had been three weeks, and that had been his choice. Otherwise, she would've seen him back again sooner. Never had she been away from him for long in the past, and that thought desired to press the panic button in her head continuously. How the h*ll was she supposed to do that for a year? And, what if he did meet her at the airport?
Would he really reveal himself in public like that? It didn't seem likely, but he could figure out a way to blend in. A hood over his head and hands in his pockets might seem suspicious, but his speed was incredible. He always could dart through a crowd, and none would be the wiser. They'd probably only feel a brief breeze before wondering where it had come from.
If he met her before the airport, though, that would be easier for him. Most likely, that would be his choice, so she would have to keep a close eye out for him. Realistically, he could jump through one of her windows and onto the backseat, like he had done when she had been in the car with Nick and escaping from the tunnels and forest. Now, however, she figured that he wouldn't want to create too much attention since he would be in new territory.
Luckily for him, there were trees all around. There were less at the airport, but they were still there and could provide him the perfect hiding places. All he had to do was stand behind one and jump her at the right time. It didn't help that it was in the middle of the early morning.
Despite all of her talk about him not wanting to make a scene, it was dead out. Even the airport might not be that busy. She hadn't been in a long while, so she didn't know exactly how many people probably would be there at around two in the morning. The quiet streets would give him the advantage of him surprising her before the airport all the more. He simply could stand in the middle of the street, and he wouldn't be seen.
Almost, she banged her head against the steering wheel. She had to remind herself that the task before her wasn't impossible, just incredibly difficult. (F/n) switched on the radio but kept it low. It would be another ... Her eyes widened. Fifteen more minutes had gone by. "Sh*t," she muttered to herself. Now, she really wished to keep it down. His hearing was impeccable, and she didn't want to risk him finding her all the easier.
Maybe, she was overdoing it with the radio, but this was her only shot at escaping a fate of having a child with him and even having sex with him. Both knotted her stomach dreadfully. Even just the thought of him hovering over her like that made her gag. Nearly, she had to open the window and stop the car to puke.
Forcing those thoughts out of her head, she focused on the station, which was playing songs back from the eighties. She didn't mind, and she enjoyed some of the songs. Really, it just kept her more alert; however, that's also why she didn't search through other stations. (F/n) desired to maintain her eyes on the road and around it as much as possible.
Technically, the creature had stated that he would spend an hour packing and cleaning, but he could finish early. Already, he might be on the road after her. Her mind tried to lighten the conditions before her by imagining him as a cartoon chasing her down with hearts in his eyes, but that only chilled her more. The silly pink hearts soon morphed into real human ones while crimson dripped from his teeth and nails.
Shivering some, she shook off the thought and made a left turn up ahead. Her heart rate calmed down before it skyrocketed. Immediately, she slammed on the break. She flew forward some before she impacted the back of her seat hard. A groan left her lips, and she squinted out into the darkness.
While her right hand rubbed her head to soothe it, she leaned forward more as her tired and sore body protested. A doe and its baby looked back to her before they continued on their way. If she had hit either or both, her car could've been thoroughly damaged, and she might've suffered hallucinations of the deer. She rolled her eyes at her attempt at humor. Those times had been absolute h*ll, and she was glad to be rid of them. Neither Brent nor Dean ever had appeared before her again.
Pushing on the gas once more, she surveyed her surroundings quickly and noted that the creature wasn't nearby. Her heart relaxed some, and she tried to make herself comfortable again. Unfortunately, her back and head probably would hurt for awhile more. She wouldn't be surprised if bruises formed, and it wasn't even a full hour into the horrid game of tag yet.
Letting a sigh escape her lips, she formulated a plan should the creature cut her off from the airport. She could try for another one nearby, but he most likely suspected that tactic. Therefore, her next move would be to head south and try for an airport there. The weather would be warmer, and the sun present for more of the day. Even if he could handle daylight now, extra sunlight wouldn't hurt her success.
How far could she drive, though? He could catch up to a car easily, and he could track her all the better as long as she had the same car. A car dealer could help, but she didn't have a lot of money to spend, especially if she wanted a plane ticket to another country. Thankfully, she already had a passport.
Her identity would pose another issue. Someone might recognize her as one of the two survivors of Cankerfell Tunnels. All thought her to be dead, or most did. If she was discovered at an airport, more trouble would ensue, and she'd be back at the scenario of being stopped. A loud groan left her.
Perhaps, she could sneak onto the plane through the luggage? It might be possible. She had escaped the creature beforehand, so hiding in luggage shouldn't be too hard. Right? Then again with how tight security was at the airport, she might not be able to pull that off. And if she got caught, well ... it'd be worse than her identity being recognized.
"Maybe, I'll get lucky, and he'll get hit by a car enough times," she grumbled to herself as she was hunched over the steering wheel. The likelihood of that happening was about the same as a shark springing up out of the snow and devouring him. (F/n) hung her head a little and stared to the clock. Her heart seemed to stop momentarily; her hour was up. He was after her by now without a doubt.
Practically, she could hear his giggling in the distance. She made another left turn and reminded herself that she was getting closer to her destination. If only it could come to her, though. Then, she'd definitely make it there before him. A car passed her by and headed in the opposite direction. They were going towards the creature, but they didn't know that; they didn't need to since they didn't need to fear his advance. (F/n) swallowed her own saliva in dread and pressed on the gas just a little bit more.
