The Softer Arrangement
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
Even though the camera was stationary, she stayed low to the ground and sneaked over to the truck. Once she reached it, she raised herself up by a little bit and peeked inside. No keys were conveniently lying on the seat, and the truck looked empty. Even the bed of the truck had nothing, which made sense since it was the middle of the evening and the store already had closed.
What was nice, though, was the fact that the delivery truck looked like a normal white pickup truck. She would blend in better that way on the road. The truck probably was smaller than the usual delivery vehicle since the grocery store was local. There probably weren't too many people calling for their groceries to be delivered in the area. Unfortunately, she did note the store's logo on the left side of the vehicle. It even had the number for delivery painted on it too.
A sigh parted from her. Most likely, it was on the other side of the truck too, but she didn't check since she might walk into the camera's view. Well, it still was less obvious, especially since no logo was on the back of it. (F/n) turned her attention, however, to the driver's door, and she tried to open it. Not surprisingly, it was locked. She peeked in through the window next and saw that the passenger door was locked too, which meant that she needed to search for the keys.
Diverting her focus away from the truck and onto the rest of the backroom, she noticed the small office. Probably, the keys were in there, but the problem would be if there was another key to the office itself. If there wasn't, she would be surprised. Then again, the backdoor had been left open. Maybe, the workers had been careless again.
Her movement stopped, though, when she heard wheels rolling across tile. She glanced over to the back doors leading to the main store. From her viewpoint, she couldn't see anyone, but the sound was growing louder. There was no way that she would make it to the office in time, so she spun around and threw herself onto her hands. (F/n) crawled under the truck and watched a worker soon enter the space.
She was humming a light tune to herself as she wheeled the empty cart over to the stock section. Soon enough, she couldn't see the worker but only hear her due to her position. (F/n) didn't try to glance over her shoulder since the space between the base of the truck and her head was almost laughable. What she did catch, though, was the quiet sound of jingling keys. Hopefully, one of those wasn't the one to the office, or the night would become even more difficult.
The worker's humming continued, and one of the backdoors opened, but it never shut. (F/n) waited for the sound of the door to close, but a pit in her stomach formed when she heard the humming die down slowly until it faded completely. Carefully, she peeked out from under the truck. She didn't sight anything wrong, but the worker seemed just to be staring at something beyond the doors. There was no way that the creature would just stand in the middle of the store, right?
Crawling out from under the truck more, she attempted to get a better view of what the woman was observing. When she did see into the main store, she spotted nothing out of the ordinary, but the woman remained in place. "This doesn't make sense," the woman muttered to herself. "I know that I had seen those in there before I had walked in here," she continued to mumble. Doing her best not to make a sound, (f/n) moved out further from her hiding to follow the line of sight that the worker had. When she finally was looking in probably the exact direction the worker was staring in, she felt a knot form in the pit of her stomach. Both of them had their attention directed towards the floral department.
What was odd, though, was that none of the cooling buckets were empty. All of them had flowers in them, and none of the arrangements appeared tampered with, but given the worker's stare, one of them very well might've been. That fact alone caused an unsettling feeling to wash over her, and something else awful occurred to her. What if the workers hadn't opened the backdoor?
Somehow, she managed to hold back a gulp, and she steadily rose to her feet as the worker walked out from the backroom. She stayed close to her right-side of the backdoors so that the worker would have a lower chance of spotting her. Leaving the backroom completely, the worker closed the door behind her. (F/n) stared out the small window in the right door and towards the flowers. That feeling of unease grew when the worker approached a bouquet of white and ... pink flowers.
White and pale pink roses and baby's breath filled the bouquet. The worker lifted up the collection of flowers, after opening the cooler door, and turned it around in her hands as though new flowers would sprout in it. Gradually, she lowered the flowers and placed them back into the bucket. Steadily, she shut the cooler door.
Immediately, (f/n) froze. She could've sworn that she just heard soft footfalls. (F/n) spun around on her heel and stared towards the darker part of the backroom, which presumably led to the freezer. It also led to other sections in the store, but the plastic strip barriers weren't moving. And, the freezer door hadn't opened or closed, but it did remind her of a modern version of the one back in the tunnels. That only caused her to experience more dread.
Nearly, she choked on her own saliva when she saw blood seeping out the bottom of the door. She recalled the pile of bones in the kitchen, and the smell of rotten food filled with insects. (F/n) covered her mouth and had to look away. The young woman hunched over and managed to keep her stomach from emptying itself, but the memories played with her mind, and she swore that she smelled the putrid scent of the expired food.
Slowly, she took a deep breath in before she exhaled as she told herself that the images and smells were only her imagination. She wasn't back in the tunnels; she was above ground and in a fully operating grocery store. As she composed herself, however, she had missed something that the female worker had muttered.
Not long after she recovered herself, (f/n) blinked and went to examine the main store again, but her vision cut out. Or rather, the lights went out. A chill ran through her bloodstream. "What on earth?" the female worker muttered from the floral department. It wasn't long before (f/n) heard a thud follow, and she distanced herself from the backdoors. No doubt the creature was in the store with her. He probably had lock-picked and opened the backdoor into the backroom.
Lights coming back on, she hurried, but quietly, over to the office and checked the door. Annoyingly, it was locked, so she didn't wait another moment to head towards the backdoor. She'd have to find another means of transport, but she wasn't going to stick around in the grocery store with the creature nearby. The only problem was that she didn't know if she could find any other means of transportation at the present hour, at least not close by. Her chances of retrieving the truck keys and driving out with the creature remaining in the store, though, were minimal at best, impossible at worst.
Either option was awful, but if she left the store now, she probably would have a better chance of getting away from the creature. About to reach for the doorknob of the backdoor leading outside, she paused. Behind her, she heard the sound of something being dragged. Already, she knew what it was, or who it was. (F/n) didn't glance back until she heard something be thrown across the ground. It slid towards her, and, hesitantly, her eyes diverted themselves to it: a box cutter.
Its blade was drawn. Her eyes moved from it to the two figures by the backdoor. Both were unconscious, but the creature was missing from the picture. The blade, though, was an obvious threat. She had a feeling that if she left he would kill them with that weapon. Once again, the lights went out, and she heard his soft footfalls again. They weren't too close to her, but they were in the backroom. (F/n) didn't call out to him, though, since she didn't know if the cameras had audio or not. That probably was why he wasn't speaking either, but the silence only made the situation worse.
Part of her wished to bolt out the backdoor and not glance back, but the other part couldn't bear another life to be lost in their game. Ultimately, it wouldn't be her fault that the two employees died. The creature would kill them, not her ... but, she did enter the store. She was the one to put them in the creature's path; she chose where the game went, not him, but he followed. Still, she had the knowledge that he would go where she went. And, that caused her to feel responsible to a degree even if she wouldn't be their killer.
With great trepidation, she remained in her spot until the lights came back on. When they did, her stomach bundled itself into a tighter knot. If it was a ball of tangled lights, she wouldn't be shocked. Before her were pink carnation petals. They decorated the floor and led to the door of the office. The door was open, and she hadn't even noticed the sound of a door unlocking and opening. Then again, her thoughts had distracted her quite a bit, which she realized had made her incredibly vulnerable. Silently, she cursed herself for her carelessness.
Regardless, she didn't take a step towards the petals or the office. No doubt, he was at the other end of them, and that would mean game over. If she left the building, though, that would mean the death of the two employees, so she stayed where she was. She would draw him out; he'd have to come to her. Her right hand reached to the zipper of her backpack, ready to remove the knife from it again. Already, she had stabbed him once that evening; she could do it again. Are you sure?
That question rang in her ears, and her hand wavered slightly. She had no time to ponder it, however, since soft footfalls hit her ears again. The creature's form emerged from the office, and he leaned against the nearby wall. His sunglasses were off, and his eyes, despite the light, stared at her completely. He moved his lips and mouthed, "Come here, my pink flower."
