The Snappier Intelligence
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
Everywhere, it remained quiet except for their light footsteps and breathing. Gretchen remained in the lead while Leon and Terry stayed behind her. So far, they hadn't encountered the creature or Oliver, presuming that Oliver had been captured, killed or both. By some small chance of luck, he might be successfully hiding, but they doubted that. Even if he had escaped with his life in the past, the creature had captured him back then too. As Terry had put it, little Ol would be perfect boyfriend material for Gretchen soon if not already.
The smirk that formed on the red-head girl's lips from that comment remained there now too. They were diving further into the cave system, which meant that they only could be drawing nearer to the creature. At some point, the creature would have to give up its hiding spot. All of them did stop at points to see if they could hear footsteps around them, but there was nothing every time.
Terry continued to press herself up against Leon and stared up ahead with searching eyes. She wanted to sight her love already; she wanted to give it its princess doll so that it always could have her next to it. The youngest member of the group desired to run up to it and give it a giant hug even if its clothes were soaked in blood; she didn't mind getting crimson on herself to be with it. Besides, she always could clean the creature up later before she put it in its cage for safe keeping.
Moving the flashlight back and forth a little, Leon paused. The light fell on a path traveling downwards. To get down there, though, one had to jump, and if the person didn't have help, they wouldn't be able to make it back up. Gretchen halted her walking and stared back to the two of them. "What is it?" she asked quietly as she stepped over to them.
Looking down, she leaned against a nearby rock wall. "Do you think that the creature might be down there?"
Leon met her gaze and shook his head. "I don't know. But, we haven't been having any luck up here. It's worth a shot, but all of us can't go down. Otherwise, we'll be stuck, especially if we have to bring an unconscious creature back up with us." Gretchen nodded in understanding, and Terry released his arm, but she didn't jump down. Focusing on both of them, he mentioned, "I can go down, and you two stay up here. Or, both of you can go, and I'll stay. Another option is Gretchen, you go, and I'll stay with Terry."
Gretchen was about to speak before they all heard a noise down the lower path. It sounded like something had been thrown. Leon crouched and shone the light down there more. Something went flying by as he did, and he fell backwards from surprise. The flashlight rolled, but Terry stopped it with her left foot. Composing himself, he pushed himself up and back onto his feet as Terry handed him the flashlight.
Upon each of their lips, there was a grin. "Looks like it is down there, and it wants us to come," Gretchen commented, excitement pumping through her veins. "Who should go?"
"I know who." All of them froze out of glee, and all of their gazes turned down. None of them could spot the creature, but the playful, high-pitched tone had to belong to it. "And, I want to make a little arrangement with that person." A giggle hit all of their ears, and Terry felt like she might faint from the wonderful sound. "It's simple. All of you want me, and I'll give you each a chance to get me. But, not at once."
Tsking hit all of their ears. "Three against one isn't exactly fair, and a one-on-one fight will prove your worth to me. Otherwise ..." A series of giggles echoed around them. Terry had to sit down to calm her beating heart. "Oh?" Another giggle followed. "One of you must be just losing it up there. Let me guess." All of them heard a loud snap resonate in the cave. "Terry."
She thought that she might faint. "I-I-I ..."
"Save it for later. We'll play together, then." Another word didn't come out of her. Her purple optics were distant, and her mind was off in dreamland, imagining what the creature meant by that. Could the night get any better for her?
"No, I want Leon right now. I have a test for him." Gretchen met Leon's gaze, and he nodded that he was alright with it. "You win, and you get me. You lose ... Well, I think that you know the end result there." Leon felt his heart begin to hammer in his chest, but it was from pure joy. He was going to beat this exam; he had everything he needed.
"First, what is this test?" Leon asked, standing on the edge of the drop-off point. A giggle greeted his ears.
"Come down and find out." The creature released another giggle, and its soft footfalls soon could be heard. "You should know that I won't reveal those details to all of you. Otherwise, you might cheat and get help from them."
"You don't trust me?"
Loudly, giggles echoed throughout the cave again. "Trust you?!" More followed. "You're trying to capture me! What kind of fool do you think I am?" it asked, though; its amused tone indicated that it didn't really care for an answer. "Now, come down. Or, you lose the chance for your one-on-one fights. And if you choose that route, I'll just start coming for you all and kill you."
Averting his attention to Gretchen, he saw her nod, and she indicated for him to hop down. Leon returned a firm nod before he patted Terry on the head. "I'll get it for you." She stared up at him all dreamy eyed and nodded. He smirked and jumped down.
Landing, he stepped forward and analyzed his surroundings. To his left was simply a wall with a rock at the base of it, so he faced right and shone the light down that path. It was one long hallway, and the creature's back was turned to him. The creature was heading down the hall slowly and calmly. Its hands were in its hoodie's pockets, and its back was bent forward a bit.
Arms longer than a humans hung by his side in the process. Leon wondered how the creature was able to move around in plain sight without anyone noticing the arm difference. Then again, they had to be only several inches longer at most, which wasn't too bizarre, but those extra inches did give it more reach, which was slightly worrying; however, he would be able to overcome that obstacle.
Halting its movements, the creature stood up straight and tilted its head back. The hood fell from its head, and nearly white locks framed its too human face. Its eyes, which were squinted against the light, though, were something else. Seeing it up close really made a difference. For a second, Leon felt his heart give pause, but he refused to be intimidated by his target.
Smirking, its ghost-white lips curved upwards, and it tilted its head back up into a normal position. Gradually, it turned around and faced him. Its very pale blue optics with very pale grey pupils narrowed in sadistic delight. A chill raced up Leon's spine, and he gripped the flashlight harder. "Are you going to tell me the details of this test or what?" Leon asked as he shifted on his feet to keep his nerves at bay. His tone was harsh too to have some authority in the situation.
"I can't believe you actually came down." The creature leaned forward and giggled, looking utterly entertained. "Oh wait!" It snapped its right middle finger and thumb. "Yes, I can. You're just a foolish kid thinking that you can catch me and succeed where the others failed." An eyebrow of Leon's twitched in irritation. "Aww, did I hit a nerve?" the creature giggled out as a grin widened on its lips. Leon gripped the flashlight tighter.
"Well, no matter, we do have the test, and you will have me if you win." The creature removed its left hand from the pocket. Leon noticed that its nails were coated in crimson, and he forced away the feeling of dread in his stomach. "One. This test is easy." It held up its index finger before it added its middle one. "Two. I'll let you walk by me and won't attack you." Now, its ring finger contributed to the set. "Three. I want to give you the experience that the two survivors of the tunnels had, so you'll need to run as soon as you go by me." Its pinky joined the three. "Four. Your objective is to find a way around me and get back up where your group members are." Finally, its thumb popped up. "Five. You do that, and I'll let you take me; you can even make me unconscious if you desire that. Though," it giggled in a disgusted tone, which Leon couldn't discern, "Terry might want that the most."
"Can I knock you out before that?"
"Of course, you can." The creature slipped its left hand back into the pocket. "But if I wake up and you're not up by your friends, I still could win." It winked to him. "So, be careful, or," it giggled and grinned, "I'll have a lovely surprise for you." Leon resisted the urge to gulp. Stepping to the side and leaning against the left wall, the creature motioned for Leon to come forward. Leon, though, glanced back, but he didn't hear anything from Gretchen or Terry. They were waiting, and they knew that he didn't need their encouragement.
As Leon took steps forward, the creature closed his eyes. He could've put on his sunglasses, but he wouldn't use them for this. No, he didn't need to try that hard for these three; they were too worthless for that, and he couldn't wait to eliminate his present prey.
