The Lighter Steps
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
Making a right turn, the van started to slow down. (F/n) shifted in her spot some. Her legs needed to stretch badly, and her back ached from its uncomfortable resting place. Both of her eyes felt dry with wanting of sleep since the morning hours only were growing later. At least, that meant that the creature was becoming tired too. There were some benefits to his schedule unless he decided to change it in order to have an easier time catching her. Did he really require a simpler time, though? Multiple opportunities to end the game had occurred, yet he hadn't swept them up. Rather, he had prolonged the game; he wanted a challenge, and he was administering that to himself. Perhaps, that ego of his came in handy for her.
Stopping, she barely paid attention to the two officers' conversation. It no longer pertained to the diner or what Thomas briefly had spotted crossing the road. Rather, it focused on the food they were ordering and if Thomas was going to join Dan and a few other officers at the station at a local bar over the weekend. Their voices soon grew softer as they closed the doors behind them. Almost, she jumped, though, when the backdoors of the van opened. Thomas moved some things around before he called out to Dan, "Found it!" Probably, it was his wallet. He shut the doors, locked them and hurried off to reach his superior.
(F/n) released a breath, and her shoulders sagged. Now, what? She had to get out; she didn't want to ride into the station with them. Otherwise, getting out of the van unnoticed would be difficult. Getting to her feet some, she stretched her legs as best as she could and let out a satisfying hum when her knees popped a bit. The young woman peered over the front seats and out the front. A smile graced her lips.
Right now, she was in some small town, but there were more buildings around than just the Speedy Sandwiches. There was a small motel and a few local shops. Among the structures, there were homes too. They were small, but they made the town have a cozy appearance to it. Well, that would've been the case had there not been morning fog starting to roll in as the sky just was beginning to become less dark. With the fog, her chest tightened in trepidation. The creature could emerge from its wispy form and wear that cursed grin of his while giggling. It wouldn't surprise her if crimson decorated him, and a body dragged behind him.
She gulped but steeled herself to analyze more of her surroundings. Inspecting the rest of the parking lot, her eyes widened some. There was a tour bus. From her view, she couldn't see inside the restaurant to determine if all of the passengers were inside or not, but the driver was standing outside and smoking a cigarette. (E/c) optics scanned over the side of the bus. Castle Lake Amusement Park. That would either be a terrible or a perfect place to lose the creature. It was either that or take her chances in the town.
Briefly, she gazed over the small, fog-covered town. Her stomach formed knots, and she gazed back to the bus, which would be filled with other people soon enough. If she stayed surrounded by people yet remained hidden, she would be better off. Tour bus it was. Still, she hoped that the amusement park wasn't the stereotypical one in horror movies where they practically advertised for murderers to venture past their doorstep. She told herself not to over think it and wait until she got there to make such a judgment. It would still be better than the creepy vibe the fog was producing at alarming levels.
Quietly, she stepped across the back of the van even though the officers were inside. The van still could be seen moving some if she wasn't careful. If the officers noticed such a thing, they probably wouldn't take long to reach the backdoors of the vehicle. She didn't think that she could make up some explanation for being in the back of their van. And if they connected her to the diner and to her past media coverage from the tunnels, problems would skyrocket.
Gently, she unlocked and opened the right door. She closed the door behind her and wished that she could lock it, but she didn't have the key. Thankfully, no one seemed to notice her yet. Using the van as some coverage, she managed to avoid the eyes of the bus driver, who continued to lean against the one wall of the restaurant and enjoy his smoke.
Crouching behind the hood of the van, she waited for the right moment. Her heart beat fast in her chest, and her ears listened for any movement around her. She hoped that no one from the town was watching her and wondering what she was up to. Otherwise, she doubted that they'd remain quiet about her sneaking onto the tour van.
Rustling of a trash bag, though, alerted her. She glanced behind her and across the street. Nothing unusual was there. (F/n) averted her attention to around her before her eyes landed on a nearby trashcan. A light breeze moved the bag some. By a little bit, she relaxed. Just where was he? He had to have been trailing the van.
A loud ringing caught her attention. The bus driver retrieved a phone out of his right jacket pocket and answered. He leaned his right side against the wall and faced away from the bus. Perfect. Swiftly, she ran across the parking lot to the bus. Her eyes watched the driver as well as the area to her right. No one left their shop or home, and no one came out to question her.
Once she reached the bus, she walked softly around to the entrance, which was open. The bus driver started to turn around, and she slipped on. She crawled up the steps so as not to be seen accidentally through one of the windows even if they were tinted. When she was among the seats, she stayed low to the ground and adjusted her turquoise backpack some. (F/n) headed to the very back of the bus and smiled some at the fact that the seats had backs that went to the floor. Someone would have to step behind the very back seats to spot her.
Somewhat, her smile fell when she noticed the trash behind her chosen spot. No doubt, the area was considered the trash can for whoever sat on the seats in front of her. Seriously, people couldn't have waited to throw their garbage into a trashcan once the bus stopped? She frowned in annoyance before she kicked the rolled up wrappers out of her way. At least, there wasn't gum on the floor or back of the seats.
Removing her backpack, she leaned her back against the farthest seat from the aisle and stretched her legs out as much as she could. A light sigh left her, and she tried not to think about how she would maintain distance ahead of the creature for a whole year. At least, she had survived the night. She let out a bitter laugh. Only three hundred and sixty four more to go. Yeah, that would be easy. Her stomach grumbling, however, caused her to reach into her backpack and remove a granola bar. Once at the amusement park, she would need to remind herself to pick up some more snacks for her long journey ahead of her. For the moment, however, she could allow herself to relax to a degree, and she needed that before whatever craziness awaited her in the amusement park.
Outside of the bus, though, the creature giggled. An amusement park? Well, that would be entertaining. He had heard about them from some of the fools who had entered his past home of the tunnels. "I always did want to try out a rollercoaster," he muttered to himself as he moved out from behind the cover of some trees. A frown soon graced his lips, however.
It was truly a pity that he had to leave those three bodies in the woods. Luckily, he had managed to bury them all before following the police van. And with the snowfall that was bound to happen soon with the buildup of clouds around the area, it'd be even harder to find the three, especially since he had buried them beneath the dirt too and not just the present snow on the ground.
His hands rested in his bloody pockets, which he had emptied of his food earlier. He wouldn't need to eat for some time after that meal, and he had grabbed ice from the diner for his dishes in his navy blue duffel bag, so he was alright on food for awhile. That didn't mean that he couldn't take some dessert. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be his little helper.
Of course, he could waltz onto the bus and tag her, but that wouldn't be as fun as surprising her. His optics diverted over to the entrance to the sandwich shop. High school students were chatting inside, and some were lined up for the restrooms. He wondered what location they were from and if they came from the same high school as (f/n). That would be quite amusing.
To his joy, several of the teens left the fast food restaurant and started to head back to the bus. One of them trailed behind the rest of the group before going in the opposite direction to relax on one of the benches away from the food place. A sigh parted from the creature. The teen's choice of clothes was obnoxiously bright. Well, he couldn't be picky; he just hoped the dessert would taste halfway decent.
Silent footfalls soon advanced towards the male, who didn't appear to hear a single one. Maybe, he had earphones in. All the better. Right behind the human male, the creature leaned on the back of the bench some. His right fingers tapped the wood, and the teen remained oblivious. The creature couldn't help but giggle.
Deciding to mess with the teen more, the creature slid his fingers across the teen's upper left arm. As expected, the teen bolted right up in his spot. Hurriedly, the younger male spun around. "Hey there." The teen looked frozen to the spot from confusion and caution. Slowly, the creature removed his left hand from his pocket. "So, I was wondering if you happened to have some food on you?" Eyes widened and lips parted before the teen cursed and bolted. Another giggle parted from the creature, and he simply reached out and grabbed the hoodie of the male. His right hand swiftly covered the mouth of the human while the creature remarked with another giggle, "I'll take that as a yes. Let's share it."
