The Hastier Hiding
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
As the evening hours passed into early morning, the drive along the road contained paranoia, but, at least, her lip had healed. (F/n) still hadn't seen the creature after her, though, and, thankfully, there weren't too many cars on the road. It did help that it was pitch black out except for headlights on other vehicles so that the labels on the sides of the truck couldn't be seen; however, that would become a problem as the morning progressed. At some point, she'd have to move on foot. Otherwise, someone might wonder why Faller's Grove local grocery delivery truck was hours out from the town. If someone reported it, that would be even more problematic since she'd then have police on her, not to mention that they might be able to get a quick glance of her appearance.
Additionally, the workers back at the store probably were up by now if the creature hadn't disposed of them. She hoped that he hadn't, but she also doubted that he had. In a small town like that if two people went missing, it'd be a huge deal, but the workers would report the strange happenings and the missing the truck. With that in mind, she might already have police looking for her.
A pit formed in her stomach at that idea. If they got involved, the situation would become too complex, and she'd be hounded with questions about the creature and where she had been all of those months. Her parents most likely would be questioned too, and their livelihoods might be on the line. They already had enough on their plate; she didn't wish to add more to that.
Such thoughts and possibilities pointed to the simple fact that she'd probably have to dump the car soon. If she could do so near another town, that would be preferred so that she could hide out in shelter somewhere, but the current environment provided none of that. All around her still were tall pines, but the snowfall was less, and the temperature was slightly warmer too, so the conditions were better than before if she did have to trek out in the cold.
Checking the clock in the car, she noted that it was four in the morning. The sun probably wouldn't rise until six-thirty, so she had about another two hours of complete darkness, an hour and a half if she was playing it safe. That amount of time, though, wasn't including the possibility that the truck already was being searched for. Regardless of those facts, she wished to know where the creature was so that she wouldn't park the car and find him waiting right outside for her.
Groaning at her predicament, she leaned her head against the steering wheel momentarily. Briefly, she stared to the gas tank. She had a quarter tank full, which should be enough for the rest of the drive. Besides, stopping at a gas station was out of the question, especially with a stolen vehicle. And, it would be unnecessary since she had to leave the truck behind soon anyway.
Lifting her head back up, she checked the mirrors again, and she didn't sight the creature again. Annoyingly, though, she couldn't see too far out due to the amount of light around her. Her right fingers tapped against the wheel, and she tried to figure out where he could be hiding. If he had jumped into the bed of the truck, she would've heard it, but there were so many trees around her that he simply could be using them as cover. (F/n) easily could imagine the entertained grin on his lips as he giggled. The desire to punch him straight in the face coursed through her, and she had to grip the wheel harder to replace that urge.
Shifting a bit on the seat, she attempted to get a bit more comfortable as sitting for so long was uncomfortable to a degree. Then again, she knew that she'd miss the truck when she had to leave it and travel on foot. As she moved, though, she winced since she pressed down too hard on her left thigh. Briefly, she peered down to where her wound was covered by her jeans. A shiver snaked up her spine at the thought of him biting her there, and her leg nearly twitched from the memory of it.
Gently, she rested a hand over the spot as if that would remove the wound altogether. The action only ended up calming her down a bit, but it reminded her that she needed to kill him. Whatever had happened back in the woods in Faller's Grove had been a mistake. It had been nothing more. Next time, she wouldn't be confused, and she would kill him when she had the opportunity. No more bite wounds would cover her, and she could lead a somewhat normal life again. She could even let Nick know that she had beaten the creature and that she was safe. A small smile touched her lips at the thought, but her optics focused back on the road.
Up ahead, she saw a sign since a side road jutted off from the main one. The sign had an arrow and beside it the name of another town: Flat Peak. Quickly, she looked to where the main road led, and the next town was about another two hour drive out. That would be cutting it close, and she didn't see any traffic down the side road, which meant that she'd probably have less of a chance of getting caught down it.
Making the turn, she felt that car ride suddenly became a whole lot more bumpy since the road had switched from a paved one to a dirt one. She hoped that the road would change back eventually, but another pressing problem greeted her. The truck hit a rough bump in the road, and a few moments later, the tire pressure light came on. (F/n) hoped that just was an error, but she began to feel the car lean more to the right. "Sh*t," she muttered as she instantly regretted taking the side road.
Even with one of the tires becoming flat, she continued to drive so that she could look for a spot to hide the truck. She leaned forward and surveyed her surroundings ahead of her. In the distance, she saw a bridge and beneath it looked to be a pretty good drop. It would create a lot of sound, but she doubted that anyone was nearby since she couldn't see Flat Peak yet. The creature, though, probably would hear the sound, but he most likely was close by anyway.
(F/n) began to veer off towards the right and head for the drop. She pressed the gas pedal more and unclipped her seatbelt. Her hands left the wheel, and she grabbed the driver's door. Frustratingly, the truck began to slow down a little bit from the snow, so she slammed her foot on the gas. The truck practically shot forward, and she threw herself out of the vehicle.
Much to her displeasure, she landed face first in the snow and groaned from hitting her thigh on the ground, but she heard a loud crash below her soon after. She picked herself up and dusted some of the snow off of her, but her clothes were soaked to a degree, and she hoped that the town would only be thirty minute walk at max so that she could get warm. Already, she could feel the cold nipping at her even though it supposedly was warmer in the area.
Her attention, though, soon directed itself over to the bridge, where she saw light beneath it. Walking closer, but not standing too close to the edge of the drop, she glanced down and saw the crushed car below. The engine had caught fire from the crash, and she presumed that it would blow any time soon. (F/n) backed away and tucked her hands away in her navy blue jacket before she went over to the bridge. She darted across the wood as fast as she could with her thigh wound, but she was careful to an amount so that she wouldn't slip and slide off between the sturdy ropes, which lined both sides of the structure. Maybe, she was being too careful, but when the truck blew, she was worried about the explosion affecting the bridge. Hopefully, it wouldn't catch fire, or she'd have another problem.
If a fire did start in the forest, she had a feeling that the creature might end the game to get out of there with her. The thought would've been sweet if the situation involved someone else than the creature and didn't concern the deal between them. Having to bear his child wasn't exactly on her to-do list for life. Just the thought of that formed a knot in her lower organs, and it made her stomach turn.
Once across the bridge, she took a breather, and her hands covered her ears as a loud boom erupted throughout the area. She heard wildlife scurry and fly away, and she hoped that no one on the main road would come to check it out. Regardless, she needed to hurry and find somewhere to hide. Before she could run, however, she heard a whistle behind her. Immediately, she froze. (F/n) glanced over her right shoulder and saw the creature on the other side of the bridge.
"You certainly did a number on that truck, my partner!" he called out, giggling. "I wasn't expecting that, and how you leaped out of the moving car!" He clapped his hands together before he extended them out in a dramatic fashion. "Superb!" Another giggle left him. "I'm seriously happy that I decided to continue the game with you." The creature placed his hands back in his hoodie's pockets. "Otherwise, I would've missed that."
During his apparent approval of her decision, she began to back up and now wished that the explosion at least had caused the bridge to break. Then again, it could be possible that he'd still be able to jump the drop. "Though, it would've been made up for with another activity." A grin stretched across his lips, and she felt her midsection tighten extremely, and she had the urge to press her legs together.
Another giggle parted from him, and he smirked. "Anyway, are you going to run or keep standing there, (f/n)? I don't mind either, but I am going to cross this bridge." He pointed down for further emphasis, and she needed no more incentive to bolt off as speedily as she could in the other direction. "That's what I thought," he muttered to himself in amusement before he began to walk across.
Pushing her legs to race faster through the snow, she went off of the main path but continued to head in the same direction so that she wouldn't get lost. She needed to locate some place to lose him, and she hoped desperately that Flat Peak had that possibility for her. Otherwise, she'd have to think of something else or keep running, and she didn't know how much longer she could maintain her present pace, especially with her thigh wound begging her to stop.
