The Deadlier Turn
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
Up ahead, there was one last turn. Then, it was a straight drive to the airport. It reminded her of that last turn in the tunnels and those dreadful stairs, but Nick and she had made it out of there. Even Tara had before she had been forced out of the car by the creature. A chill ran through her body at the memory. "I can it make it again," she told herself even though her voice held little to no confidence.
She didn't even know where she was going exactly after the airport. (F/n) would take whatever seat was available on any plane and head there. If she had options, that'd be better, but she couldn't be picky in her present situation. All she had was a passport, though, and not a visa, so the most she could realistically stay in another country without one would be a few weeks, and it depended on the visa requirements of the individual countries.
Another groan left her. That restriction could very well seal her loss, but she had to try. She didn't exactly have the time to search on her phone for the various requirements in the different countries. So, it would fall back into the game of chance. Calling the deal "tag" was ridiculous. Yes, it was a chase, but both the creature and she knew that it wasn't a test of speed. It was luck. If he wasn't blocking her way to the airport, she would be lucky by the fact that he had traveled to the wrong one.
Her mind drifted from her thoughts as her attention diverted back to her surroundings. The trees seemed to grow in height, and the darkness at their bases strengthened in dread. She couldn't help but gulp. Part of her urged to turn back around. Go another way. But, she pushed that aside. Hopefully, though, luck would be on her side.
Flicking on her right blinker, she heard the light tapping of the device, and she turned off the music as her worry heightened. She turned the wheel, and the car traveled the turn seemingly slow. Her eyes met the road ahead. (F/n) saw the airport in the distance; however, her optics didn't stay on it long. Luck wasn't on her side.
Not too far away, the creature stood in the middle of the road. There were no other cars, and her headlights shone on him like he was about to perform. Trying to process that he had managed to get ahead of her and choose the correct path, her foot hovered over the gas pedal. Should she stop and turn around or speed ahead? Would she even make it before he reached her?
As her foot traveled back down on the pedal, the creature vanished. She knew that wasn't the right term, but he was running at his max speed in some direction, most likely right at her. (F/n), out of pure fright, slammed her foot onto the pedal. The car screeched and launched forward; however, the driver's door ripped off. A scream parted from her, and she soon saw the creature running right next to her. If he reached out, the game already was over.
In a last ditch effort to win, she spun the car around. It tilted as it made a quick, left turn. She nearly flew out of her seat in the process, but she gripped the steering wheel for dear life as his right hand just missed grabbing her. The car landed back on all fours, and she soared off. Her eyes looked in her rear view mirror. He was gone.
Looking to her left, she didn't see him there, but she was completely exposed on that side now. There also was the fact that it was freezing, and the heater did little good against the slightly ruined car. However, that wasn't her major concern presently. Where had he gone?
When her eyes met the rear view mirror again, they widened, and she swiftly changed into the wrong lane as the car door flew past. It took off the right side mirror with it, and her body couldn't help but shake. She had to keep moving, though, and she had a new airport to travel to. Heading south was her next plan unless she tried to make it past him again, but she doubted that she would. Then again, she might not even make it a few minutes south.
Checking back towards the airport, she saw him standing there again. He held up both of his hands and was already counting down. Unfortunately, he was at six and going lower. Her foot pressed harder on the gas. Now, she was well above the speed limit, but it was an emergency. She couldn't be caught. Once again, she made a turn, though, now to the right. Barely, the car made it. When it came back down, the tires hit the road hard. The car even seemed to bounce some.
To her despair, the creature was standing in front of the car. This time, she charged forward. She wasn't going to play a game of going in circles with him while her car was reduced to scrap pieces. As the car was about to hit him, he leaped up. His nails scratched across the top, and she almost covered her ears, but she couldn't abandon the wheel, especially when she was moving so fast.
Metal banged atop her head. On the passenger side, his nails stabbed through the top of the car. Her (e/c) optics somehow widened more, and she couldn't stop a scream. They were tearing the metal and creating a hole in the top of the car.
Since there were no other cars around, she switched between lanes fast and attempted to throw him off. That didn't hold any success. Rather, the hole grew bigger. When her eyes met it again, he was sticking his head through. "Hello, my little helper~" A grin appeared on his lips, and blood decorated his teeth. She hoped that had been from his food at her home and not from a new victim.
Before he could get in another word, though, she saw another turn in the distance. She pressed harder on the wheel while he removed his head from the hole in the roof. (F/n) made the turn early. The car teetered on two of its wheels, but she saw the creature fly off of the car in the process. Her heart raced, and the car managed to land back on all four. Her whole body bounced on the seat hard, and her head hit the back of the seat horribly.
Pain erupted in her skull, and she saw her vision go dark for a moment. "No!" she cried out at herself. She refused to pass out. Her yell woke her back up while her head boomed with protest. Somewhat, her vision was blurry, but she could sleep later.
Glancing back briefly, she noted the creature picking himself up. Scrapes were all over him, but they were healing rapidly as the last remnants of blood trickled down his clothes and pale skin. He reached into his right hoodie pocket and pulled out ... She squinted in the darkness. Still, she couldn't make it out exactly, but it was human no doubt. The creature took a large bite out of it before he stuffed it back in and zipped up the pocket. (F/n) hated to know how damp that jacket was with blood.
Regardless, he just was trying to intimidate her. It was working, but she couldn't give up. She still had a very long ways to go before she won the deal. Her eyes focused back to the front of her, and she shivered more due to panic tickling her skin and the cold from outside. Now, she definitely needed another means of transportation so that she wouldn't freeze in her own car.
First, though, she had to lose him somehow. She tried to remember if there any nearby establishments. There was Nick's old town, but that was closer to her town than to her present location. (F/n) furrowed her brows while her hands trembled on the wheel. When her brows relaxed, hope finally entered her eyes again. About five minutes away, there was a small diner open at all hours. It must've been a stop for trucks too since she had seen several semi-trucks outside of it.
A semi-truck wouldn't be an ideal change for her vehicle, but the owner of the diner probably had a car lying around there too. It was just hidden by the trucks. Either that or there was a piece of property behind the diner with the owner's car. Whatever the case, that hopefully would cause her to lose him and get her a new automobile. It put the lives of the owner and customers on the line, but she couldn't stay on the road forever with him right on her tail. Some sort of distraction had to occur. Hopefully, it wouldn't include bloodshed, though; that was unfortunately unlikely.
Maybe if things worked out for her, she even could try for the first airport again. Immediately, though, she knew that to be a dumb idea. He'd suspect that and cut her off once more. Then, she would be in the same position that she's in now, and she might not get away a second time.
Averting her attention back for a short time, she couldn't spot the creature anywhere again. She stared forward and to her sides. He wasn't there either. Where had he gone? A stream of curse words parted from her when she still couldn't find him even after checking over the area again. Now, he was messing with her. Before she fully could react, however, a ripping sound of metal and other parts erupted.
Instantly, she shifted her gaze to her right. The passenger door was ripped from its hinges. She pressed harder on the gas, but she couldn't go any faster, so she switched lanes again and went back into the other one. Something, definitely the creature, hit the right side of the car, but his nails crept around the open doorway now. (F/n) felt her heart pound hard and rapidly in her chest; however, she couldn't go faster, and she couldn't abandon the car. If she left it, she'd have to attempt to run to the diner. That wouldn't end well; the creature simply was too fast.
Not being able to stop him, the creature jumped into the car and onto the passenger seat. His right hand reached out to her. She wanted to jump out, but the car was moving too fast. (F/n) wasn't presented with many options. Her foot slammed on the break. Both of them went flying forward, and the car screeched almost as loudly as the creature could. Airbags popped up, and she impacted one roughly while her seatbelt kept her in place, thankfully. Moaning in pain, she gradually sat up and looked over. The airbag was ripped through, and the seat was bare but not the window.
