Chapter Thirty-Eight: Promises
The first time Ryan texts me, I dump my phone in the trash under the pretense that I don't want Singh tracking me. "Where are we going?" I ask as we wind our way through the streets, avoiding any signs of life or cameras.
Sasha and Amari share a grim look. "Tae's parents' house."
My heart staggers and I stop in my tracks. "Tae was very insistent that I don't go there."
Amari shoves her hands in her jacket pockets and nods, making her curly hair bounce. "We know. But that doesn't matter now. She says you could be Daisy's only hope of surviving."
"Me? I can't do anything for her."
"Tae was sure. Mason, you have to help."
"But I can't put Tae's family in danger. Move Daisy to a safehouse! Anywhere but there."
"Tae says she can't be moved, Mason," Sasha sighs. "She says if there was another way, she wouldn't do this either. But she promised you and you promised Dion. She refuses to let Daisy die because of her own fears."
I close my eyes, weighing my options. But my scale is broke, and my head is splitting down the middle. I don't know what Tae thinks I can do for Daisy, but I know she wouldn't have asked me to come if she wasn't certain. Sasha's right. I did promise Dion. I promised Daisy. Whatever price Tae's worried about paying, I'll pay it. Whatever price my parents asked for is my debt now. Even if it kills me.
