5 - Secrets
When they left that morning Tommy had been expecting to do the same thing as yesterday, but instead Clay drove into the city and headed toward the bridge connecting the mainland to Airbender Island. Tommy was thrilled to see the temple come into view. This was it, he could finally introduce Tubbo to Clay and he wouldn't have to lie anymore.
"Tom," Fundy practically yelled, when Tommy opened the car door. The boy latched onto his leg and started chanting. "Play! Play with me!"
"Get off my leg," Tommy said, shaking his leg around to try to get him to let go, but that only made him start laughing.
"Fundy," Wilbur said, "let go of Tommy so he can get out of the car, then you two can go play."
"Out, out, out," Fundy chanted, jumping up and down. As soon as Tommy had gotten his other leg out of the car Fundy grabbed his hand and started pulling him away.
"Sorry Clay," Tommy said, letting himself be dragged away. "I'll be back, I swear."
"No, Tommy we have to-" Clay startet, how did these people already know Tommy? What hadn't he been telling him?
"Let the kid have some fun," Phil interrupted, coming up to Clay, "besides, you can't always expect teenagers to listen."
"Tommy's different," Clay tried to glare at him, but Phil just smiled at him.
"Do you have a problem with being here," Phil asked, raising an eyebrow. "Because I have no quarrel with you. I just want what's best for Tommy."
"Funny, because I want the same thing," Clay folded his arms, "stop trying to threaten me. Aren't airbenders supposed to be peaceful and avoid conflict?"
"This airbender wouldn't hesitate to put you down if you lay a finger on Tommy or any of my family," Phil said, his tone turning dark.
"Whatever I believe is best for Tommy doesn't concern you," Clay said, "you have no idea what I can do, and what I'm willing to do."
"I get the feeling that what you think is best for Tommy, doesn't mean you have his best interests at heart," Phil said, looking over at Wilbur with a smile. "I just want the kid to be able to live his best life."
"Tommy owes me his life, I have every right to tell him what he can and can't do," Clay lowered his voice, "so stay out of my way, for his sake."
Tommy stopped with Fundy in front of Tubbo, Jack, and Puffy. Niki was not far behind them training with her firebending.
"I got him," Fundy said to Tubbo, letting go of Tommy's hand. "Candy, now."
"Alright, don't tell your dad," Tubbo handed a sucker to the boy and he grinned, skipping away.
"You really got a five year old to bring me to you," Tommy said, "You know I only was able to come here for probender training. Clay's going to be pissed if he finds out I ran off with you guys."
"Well my dad was on the Fire Ferrets when he was our age," Jack said, "I'm sure he still knows a few moves."
"Who is he," Tommy asked as Bolin came over to the training area.
"Did someone say probending," Bolin said, pointing finger guns at Tommy. "No? Nothing? Man that always made kids laugh."
"You're better at acting, Dad," Jack said, "maybe stick to big crowds and shouting 'Republic City'."
"Oh come on, lighten up Jack," Bolin said, "So probending, why don't you show me what you know? Did you know Korra, Mako, and I were around your age when we first started." Puffy cocked her head and raised her eyebrows at Bolin.
"Uh, cool," Tommy said, not knowing why he had said that. "Maybe we should wait for Eret or Sam. So I could spar with someone."
"I'll do it," Niki said, she had come over when she heard their conversation. "Unless you think you need one of these guys to be here to train."
"I don't think that's-" Tubbo started.
"Don't think I'm not afraid to kick your butt," Tommy said, he wasn't prepared for Niki to hand spring backwards and send a fireball at him. He swiftly spun around to avoid them, then sent chunks of rocks at her. Niki dropped to her hands to dodge them and spun her legs sending multiple fire blasts at him. It forced Tommy back and he jumped up, spinning in the air on his side and sent a makeshift disk at her. When landing on his feet he sent another disk at her, knocking her back, and another to knock her off her feet.
"Dude," Bolin laughed with excitement, "You might be just as good as Korra."
"You really can't keep quiet can you," Tubbo whispered to him, hoping Tommy didn't hear him.
"You've told me, now I can't think about anything else," Bolin said, "I'm terrible at keeping secrets. Why can't we tell him?"
"Because I'm not sure," Tubbo said, "but everything has lined up. It just feels right."
"Tell me what," Tommy asked, "cause I do recall you wanting to tell me something yesterday."
"If you ask me he has every right to know," Puffy said, "and Bolin, you really can't keep a secret. Why did we tell him again?"
"Because we told Asami," Tubbo sighed, he didn't plan to have the conversation like this.
"That's right, and if she thinks Tommy should know you can bet she won't ask us," Puffy smiled, "do you want to break the news Tubbo? Or should I?"
"I am so confused, can you please just tell me," Tommy asked.
"Okay, so Tommy, it is very important that you don't tell anyone, not even your brother." Tubbo said, "Because we're not quite sure if it's true or not."
"Spirits Tubbo," Tommy groaned, he didn't like the tension Tubbo was building. "Just spit it out."
"I have reason to believe you're the Avatar," Tubbo said, Tommy just looked at him with a deadpan, trying to process what he had just said.
Tommy started laughing. "Me? No. I'm nothing. I'm a nobody. I'm not the Avatar. It's impossible. This is a funny joke, right?"
"No, I'm serious Tommy," Tubbo said, "it lines up, you're the right age, in the right area, and you have connections to the right people."
"I'm not the Avatar!" Tommy insisted, "just because things line up or I know the right people doesn't make me anything special. You know everyone I do. Do we even know when Avatar Korra died?"
"On Spirit Day," Puffy said, "The president at the time made it a holiday to celebrate the birth of the next Avatar and every Avatar after my mother."
"See," Tubbo said, he didn't understand why Tommy was so against it being him, any other earthbender would have been thrilled to know they were the Avatar. "It has to be you."
"I don't even know when my real birthday is," Tommy said, trying to remain calm. "Just drop it Tubbo. It's like my brother has said, without him I would be nothing."
"Then clearly he isn't a good family for you." Tubbo said, trying to think of a way to ease Tommy into this. "How 'bout we give it a week or two. Jack, Puffy, and I will continue looking for anyone else who could be the Avatar and you will train with Niki to learn firebending."
"Two weeks," Tommy said, "Until my first probending match. And when I don't firebend, we drop the idea."
"Then we should get started," Niki pulled a leaf from one of the lower hanging trees. She lit a flame in the center and it started to turn it to ash, slowly spreading outwards. "Hold this and get into your stance. Focus on the heat, the energy of the flame."
"I feel stupid," Tommy said, he crouched down into a ready stance and held the leaf in his fingertips. "I'm not feeling anything, my hands just feel warm."
"Focus your emotions on the flame, think about life and energy," Niki instructed, "that is the source of almost every firebender." Using anger and passion were a more dangerous source and had a higher risk of burning the beginning learner.
"I've got noth-" Tommy yelped as the leaf finished burning and singed his hands.
"You're not trying hard enough," Niki grabbed another leaf. "You have to have the desire to bend, just as you have to stand strong as an earthbender, you need to have the drive to firebend. Pull from your emotions, the strongest emotions you have. Happiness, joy, protection, love. So try. Again."
Tommy tried what Niki had suggested, but every emotion somehow led back to Clay. This made Tommy start to think of the other things Clay had done. Threatening him, punishing him, taking his- "I can't do this." He dropped the leaf, not noticing the flickering flame, as if deciding whether or not to fully light. "Can we do something else. Like earthbending."
"Yes," Niki said, Eret and Sam had arrived anyway. "Tubbo, I need to talk to you."
"What is it? Did you see something I didn't? Was I right," Tubbo asked.
"I think he is the one, but it's like he has a block," Niki explained, "an emotional and mental block. It was like he wanted to light the flames while at the same time, like he was saying, refused to believe the truth. The potential is there, but until he gets his mind sorted out we're not going to get anywhere with his training."
Welp, now you all know. Did you really think Tommy was just a normal character? Nah, I made him the main character bois. Or did you think Jack, Eret, or even Ant was the Avatar? There's probably going to be another few chapters before anything happens with whatever's going on with Skeppy. And I think all you dsmp watchers know what's going on lol. Thank you all for reading and please vote and comment.
