Rats on a Train
So, last week was the school dance. Total bust. The amount of times I tried to ask Chase but ended up running away or into a wall? I don't have that many fingers or toes to count.
He ended up going with the schools pretty bitch Danielle after she ditched Adam. Then he got ditched and she went with Leo. I danced with Chase for a little bit only to have fruit punch dumped on me. Thanks, Jackson.
So now I'm really debating if I want to go to another dance.
But right now is definitely not the time to worry about dances because I am currently going 400 miles an hour on a speeding train.
Thanks to Leo.

"Okay, guys. The next phase of your training is handling extreme climates. So we'll frost Chase, bake Bree, and submerge Adam." Mr. Davenport started as I gave my three bionic friends a nervous look. "That's not part of the training, I just got one of those carnival dunk tanks and I can't wait to try it out. Okay, Chase, I'm setting your tube on "Antarctic." If it gets to be too much, just give me a sign." He said as Chase nodded, walking into his capsule.
"Bring it!" Chase yelled through his capsule as Leo groaned.
"Hey, that's not fair. I want to be abused by weather." He complained as I laughed.
"Leo, if you really want to be abused, try standing over here next to Adam's morning breath." Bree complained as Adam frowned.
"I don't have morning breath. It smells like that all day." Adam grinned as Bree and I grimaced.
"Leo, these guys are genetically engineered to handle these kind of climates. You're not. And neither are you, Vanessa, so don't get any ideas." Mr. Davenport said as I gasped.
"Hey I'm not the one that gets brain freeze from mint gum!" I defended as Leo slapped my arm, Mr. Davenport's phone ringing.
"Davenport. What?! Well, that's terrible! I mean, that's awesome, but that's terrible! I- I gotta do something." He said before quickly hanging up. We all raised a brow at him in confusion.
"What's up, Mr. Davenport? Did you order women's leggings again?" I asked as he faked a laugh.
"Ha ha, very funny. No. I created the world's fastest train, but now it's speeding out of control full of highly explosive nuclonium towards downtown Welkerville!" He said as my eyes widened.
"So then whats so awesome?" Bree asked as Mr. Davenport fan-boy'd.
"It's going like 400 miles an hour." He geeked as we all cheered to it.
"My entire career is riding or perhaps crashing on this train! I don't understand it! My design was flawless!" He praised as I crossed my arms.
"So flawless you forgot to include the emergency brakes?" I wondered as Mr. Davenport narrowed his eyes at me.
"No. I never counted on the conductor dropping his papaya smoothie all over the controls and then jumping off the train." He said as we hummed.
"Not gonna lie, a papaya smoothie sounds fantastic right now. Hey Chase do you want-" I stopped myself as I turned to the capsules, seeing Chase frozen inside his. "Uh Mr. Davenport?"
"Chase. Now I have to explain the whole train story again." Davenport said as he walked over to the control panel.
"I'm gonna go get a blanket." I called out, running out of the lab.
⁂
"The good news is, whenever I invent something, I always create a backup device to support it." Mr. Davenport said as I stood behind Chase, rubbing his shoulders in an attempt to warm him up. I frowned when I noticed the bag he was carrying.
"As opposed to just building it right the first time?" Chase commented as Mr. Davenport frowned.
"Ya know, I think I liked you better frozen." He replied as I glared at him. "My auxiliary decelerator will stop anything— Ocean liners, freight trains, tanks, eighteen-wheelers, twelve-wheelers—"
"Does it stop unnecessarily long explanations?" Leo questioned as Mr. Davenport narrowed his eyes at Leo.
"Apparently so. Only problem is, I can't figure out how to get it on the train." He said as Chase stood up. I took the blanket off of his shoulders, folding it into my arms as he gleamed with joy.
"You guys thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?" Bree asked as her and Chase jumped for joy.
"Our first mission!"
"I WANT A PET PIG!" Adam yelled as we all gave him a weird look. He smiled innocently.
"No. No, no, no. You are not prepared for this kind of mission. It is a highly volatile situation. Down the line— Fingers crossed— There will be plenty of other horrible disasters." Mr. Davenport said as I put the blanket on the chair.
"C'mon Mr. Davenport! I've seen these guys train I think they are fully capable of handling this!" I persuaded as Adam, Bree and Chase nodded. "Not to mention your career depends on it."
"Please, Mr. Davenport. This is what you trained us for." Bree begged as their father sighed.
"All right, you gotta leave the nest sometime. Okay, get in your capsules, guys. I can't believe I'm saying this—" He started to choke up, and I almost let out a snicker. "It's time to upgrade your mission suits." He said as Adam, Bree and Chase cheered, all running over to their capsules.
"I hope you addressed the chafing problem." Adam said before walking into his capsule. I eyed Mr. Davenport, who only shrugged before pressing a few buttons.
There was a line of light that crawled up from the bottom of their capsules, revealing that the o my thing that really changed about their mission suits was the padding. At least Chase still looked good. Except for the very gelled hair.
"Nice work Mr. Davenport. Now it just looks like you took off their training wheels!" I commented as he frowned at me.
"Oo! I see you put in seat warmers." Adam said with a grin as Davenport nodded.
"All right... We'll be able to use these earpieces to communicate, and I'll monitor your progress on the train surveillance system. That way if you blow yourselves up in a fiery explosion I can watch it unfold in glorious HD." He said as we all frowned. "That came out wrong."
"There's something we agree on." I muttered, Davenport ignoring me.
"We get our first mission!" Chase cheered.
"And we get to save lives!" Bree said.
"Seriously I want a pig!" Adam yelled as Mr. Davenport set up their earpieces.
"Bree... Chase.. Adam." Davenport said, Leo grabbing Adam's earpiece before he could get it. "Leo!" He scorned as his step-son frowned.
"Well what am I supposed to use?! Two cans and a string?" Leo commented as I snatched the earpiece out of Leo's hands, giving it to Adam while Tasha walked in.
"Well, your favorite news reporter just got their big break." She said with a grin as everyone started guessing random reporters. "No, me! I am done reporting on singing dogs and babies who look like ex-presidents. The network finally gave me a real assignment. I'm covering a runaway train!" She cheered as Adam laughed.
"Ain't that a coinky-dink? Mr. Davenport—" before Adam could finish, Mr. Davenport cut in.
"Is uh- so... so proud of you, honey." He lied as Tasha smiled.
"Will you watch Leo? I have a train to catch." Tasha said as Mr. Davenport nodded, Tasha walking out.
"Hey! What about Nessie?!" Leo complained as I chuckled and sighed.
"Leo. I don't break everything I touch." I whispered. "You guys have fun on this mission! I'm going to go make a papaya smoothie!" I said, giving them all a thumbs up before walking to the elevator and to the kitchen.
Now, I am usually right about my instincts, and I really wanted a papaya smoothie. But something was telling me Leo was up to no good.
And 9 out of 10 times I'm right about Leo being up to no good.
"Eddy, can I bet you money you don't need that Leo is trying to find something to crawl into so he can be on the mission?" I asked as Eddy appeared on the fridge.
"Absolutely! $100!" He said as I frowned.
"I'll give you $5 if I'm wrong."
"Good enough for me! As long as you're losing something!" Eddy said as I ran back down to the lab.
And of course I was right. Leo was no where to be found.
⁂
I'm glad I was able to scare Mr. Davenport into taking me on the high-speed helicopter. But at the same time I was dumb enough to climb down the ladder onto the train to get Leo.
How was I dumb enough to do that? Well let's just say if one of us gets a paper cut, we won't have a first aid kit to fix the boo-boo.
"Vanessa it was dumb of you to come down here." Chase said as I rolled my eyes.
"Look, if I didn't come down here, then U wouldn't get to be apart of your guys first mission. Leo would be. And I'm not having the most destructive 5-foot, 14 year old boy save a town no body likes without me!" I said as everyone shrugged a nod.
"Okay, we have approximately three minutes to slow this thing down before it hits the turn and flies off the tracks." Chase said as I nodded in somewhat understanding, even though I had no clue what I just looked at.
"Okay let's think then. An object in motion stays in motion unless an external force stops it." I said as everyone nodded. "Sk what can we put in front of the train to stop it?"
"Oh, I got it! We can put the nuclonium tanks in front of the train!" Adam said with a hopeful smile as Bree frowned.
"Then the train would blow up." She said as Adam simply smiled.
"Thus, stopping it." He replied in a 'duh' voice.
"If only Wile E. Coyote was here. He'd have a giant rubber band he could tie around two trees to stop this thing." Leo said as I frowned at him.
"You watch too many cartoons." I commented as he shrugged.
"Wait a minute. Leo, that's it! The Reid-Bennett bridge is 19.8 miles ahead. Our repelling ropes are unbreakable. So if Bree ties them all together—"
"She could use her super speed to run ahead and wrap them around the bridge supports! And Adam can use his super strength to hold the ropes and stop the train!" I cut in as Chase gave me a look of awe.
"Maybe you should be on more of our missions, Ness." Chase said as I smiled bashfully.
"Okay love the little connection you two are having right now but we don't have time for that!" Bree yelled as Leo handed her the ropes.
Adam opened up the side door to the train, the bag Leo was holding being yanked out of his grasp by the wind. "... can we chalk that up to human error?" He asked as we all nodded. Bree disappeared ahead of us, reappearing in only a few seconds.
"The rope is secure." Bree said, handing it to Adam who quickly got down to hold it in place. I gave Chase an unsure look. He placed a hand on my shoulder and squeezed it twice, nodding slowly once.
"Also look what the train did to this penny!" Bree grinned and showed us a flat penny. We all awe'd. "And this squirrel!" She said as I screamed loudly in fear. It wasn't that I was afraid of dead animals... I have a very traumatic experience with squirrels.
"Hey, guys, what if this doesn't work? I mean, I know I'm strong, but this goes way beyond our training scenarios— what if I can't do it?" Adam said as he hastily looked out to the world around us, a nervous look spread across his face like butter.
"Adam, strength doesn't just come from your muscles. It also comes from your mind." Bree reassured as Chase looked up.
"Okay, maybe someone else should take the rope." He said as I smacked his shoulder. "ow!" He whispered, frowning at me and rubbing the spit I hit.
"This is everything we've prepared for. You can do this! Just believe in yourself. I believe in you." Bree said, sitting down and hugging her brother from behind.
"I believe in you, too." Chase said, doing what Bree had just done.
"Me too. And it's not just because Bree and Chase do." I commented, sitting down and practically gripping onto Chase like a cat stuck in a tree.
"I just spent four hours in a bag without a bathroom... I think my support goes without saying." Leo said, hugging me from behind.
I may have blacked out for a moment, because the next thing I knew Chase was hurling Bree's phone out the door, and then he was counting down.
And then there was screaming. A lot of screaming.
I felt a harsh yank as I was chucked backwards from the sudden force of the train stopping. Something must have hit my head.
⁂
"Guys she's not waking up!" Chase shouted as everyone crowded around Vanessa, whose skin was suddenly patchy. He quickly did a scan of her vitals and sighed in relief.
"She only hit her head. But it looks like a concussion. Bree can you run her back to the lab?" Chase asked as Bree nodded, grunting as she lifted Vanessa up.
"Oh wait, she's light. I'm good." Bree commented before running off.
⁂
I groaned in pain as I opened my eyes slowly, squinting while trying to block the bright light that was quickly covered by a blurry figure. "You're awake!" Someone yelled, causing me to cover my ears. "Oh sorry... you have a minor concussion." I recognized the voice as Chase's, who helped me slowly sit up.
"What happened?" I asked, my vision slowly returning to normal as I looked around.
"We stopped the train but you must have hit your head on something when we stopped abruptly. But good job, Dottie, you saved the day with us!" Chase cheered as I smiled weakly, holding my head as he handed me an ice pack.
"Dottie? What's with the nickname?" I asked as Chase shrugged.
"Well whenever I look your way you always look like your seeing dots or sparkles. Completely zoned out sometimes. And you really like to draw dots on my arm when you're bored." Chase said as he slid his shirt up, revealing the several dots and smiley faces on his arm. I snickered awkwardly as I sighed.
"Yeah I guess it suits me. The thing is I usually am seeing dots a lot. I think I have a low-iron thing going on." I said as Chase chuckled.
"It's possible. I notice that when you stand up you look really dizzy afterwards. You should probably get that checked out." He commented. I tilted my head, smirking.
"So Chase... how often do you look at me?" I asked and nudged his side as his eyes widened, a nervous smile appearing on his face.
"Oh? You hear that? I think Mr. Davenport is calling me I better go check to see what he needs!" Chase said before dashing out of the lab. I watched him leave, shaking my head before groaning in pain again and sighed, laughing once again.
