*Chapter Twenty Seven*

"I want to know everything" Claire snapped once Madelyn was asleep. Elijah and Claire were in her room. Her mother was asleep down the hallway and Claire was anxiously waiting another update from Caroline saying she was alright and not bitten by Tyler.

"Where would you like me to start?" Elijah said motioning for Claire to sit knowing it would be a long night. Elijah sits on the bed as well. He's in more comfortable clothes instead of his suit seeing as it is night and they would go to bed eventually.

"Why do you want to kill Klaus?" Claire whimpered sitting crossed legged on the bed. A pained look crossed Elijah's at the sound of her voice. He instinctively reaches out to comfort her but she shuffles out of reach. The pain on his face deepens while she gives him a pointed look to start explaining.

He sighs and shifts uncomfortably. He couldn't settle, he couldn't get comfortable not when he knows she's upset, specifically at him. He didn't like it. Then the fact that she refused to let him hold her or even touch her made it worse. He felt like he was seconds from going crazy, seconds from losing it. His instincts were to always protect her, to keep her close and to keep her happy. The distance between them, despite it not even being more than a few feet, if that, was too far for his liking and it was obvious she wasn't happy.

"Me and my family, the Original vampires, cannot be killed by a normal wooden stake. As you know, it only 'kills' us temporarily. Only a stake made from the white oak tree can kill us permanently. When we found this out, we burned the tree to the ground." Claire relaxed slightly at the information. "However, a silver dagger coated with white oak ash can neutralize us for as long as the dagger is in our hearts." Elijah paused to make sure she was following along. She nods not having any questions at the moment. Elijah continues. "Klaus has a habit of daggering us and keep us in a coffin for as long as he sees fit. At the moment he has my brother Finn and Kol along with my sister Rebekah all daggered and in coffins."

"He daggers you?" Claire asked frowning her eyebrows. He nods. "For how long?" She wonders.

"For as long as he wishes. Finn has been daggered for almost 900 years" Elijah tells her. Claire's eyes practically pop out of her head.

"What gives him the right to take their lives away like that?" Claire snapped.

"It's his way of keeping the family together. Whenever one threatened to leave or was causing too much attention, he would dagger them." Elijah explains.

"Cause too much attention? Why would that matter?" Claire questioned. Elijah sighed.

"Our father, Mikael, is an Original Vampire like me and my siblings. He spends his immortal life hunting Niklaus. He wishes to kill him. When we were turned, we swore a vow 'Always and Forever'. Though only Rebekah, Niklaus and I seem to take the oath seriously. Every so often, Mikael would find us. We would have to run. Kol was usually the one who would make a scene wherever we went. He is the most bloodthirsty out of all of us. He has turned the most vampires and no doubt has killed the most as well. Klaus has daggered and undaggered Kol more times than any of us."

"So if one of you threatens to leave him, pisses him off or draws attention, he simply daggers you and crates you around in a coffin?" She asked giving him an astonished look. Elijah nods in confirmation. "Why is Mikael hunting him?"

"Because Klaus is not his son. My mother had an affair with a werewolf from a pack beside Mystic Falls. Klaus was a werewolf. When mother turned us into vampires and we completed our transformation, Niklaus triggered his curse which brought out the truth of our mothers infidelity."

"And so Klaus is hunted for something that isn't his fault?" Claire asks and again, Elijah nods.

"And even before Mikael knew about the affair, he was cruel to Niklaus. He was cruel to all of us but Klaus got the blunt force of his rage." Elijah explains. "For centuries to I stood by him. Both Rebekah and I. Niklaus kept Finn daggered because Finn didn't like being a vampire. He constantly judged our actions and ridiculed us for giving into our vampire side. Niklaus grew tired of his judgement and Finn has yet to be undaggered."

"Finn doesn't deserve that" Claire whispers. "So what if you don't get along, that doesn't give him the right to dagger any of you. Niklaus is forcing them to miss out on life. The whole world is changing and they don't get to see it. Finn has been there for 900 years, you say. How can you readjust from that?" She wonders. Elijah doesn't answer, he simply gives her the time she needs to process what he has told her. "So, you say you've stood by him all this time... Why go against him now?"

"Because he has done something... unforgivable" Elijah tells her hesitantly. Claire tenses.

"What did he do?" Claire whispers. Elijah sighs and shifts towards her more.

"He had dumped their coffins in the ocean." Claire gasps covering her mouth. Kol, Finn, her two daggered mates lay somewhere in the ocean. Who knows if anybody could find them. "That is why I wish to kill him, to avenge my family."

"Their gone?" Claire whispers tears coming to her eyes. "They can't... They can't just... No" She shakes her head. Elijah reaches for her again, this time she doesn't move away from him. He gathers her in his arms and holds her tightly. "They can't just be... gone" She whimpers crying into his chest.

"I'm so sorry, Elskan" He whispers to her.

"I never got to meet them." She whimpers. He kisses her forehead, his desire to kill Klaus escalating as he blames his brother for putting his mate through this emotional pain.

"It's alright... I'm here" Elijah comforts. "I'm not going to leave you, I promise" He whispers to her, rocking their bodies slowly. "Klaus will not get away with this." He growled. She sniffles and looks up at him. The sight of her expression breaks his heart.

"You can't kill him" She whispers. Elijah frowns his eyebrows.

"What? Claire-" She shakes her head and climbs out of his lap. Elijah wants, desperately, to keep her in his arms but she made it clear she wanted out. Once she was out of his arms she began to pace beside the bed.

"I know what he's done is unforgivable but if you kill him and shatter the bond, the pain will only intensify. I was completely heart broken when I thought you were dead. If you actually kill Klaus... I can't even imagine it." She whimpers.

"Claire, you have to understand how danger Niklaus is. How unpredictable he is." Elijah said standing up. "I know he is your soulmate but what I don't know is how he will react when he finds you."

"React?" Claire asked slowly.

"I fear Niklaus will see you as a weakness and he doesn't like weaknesses. I not only fear what he might do to you but what he will do to Madelyn." Claire tenses at her daughters name.

"You think he would hurt her?" Claire whispers inching towards the crib.

"He would see you having her as a betrayal. He will be angry you've been with another man and had a child because of it." Elijah explains gently.

"But I didn't even know you guys were real when I had her! I haven't met any of you then. And you're telling me that in the thousand years he's been alive, he's never fucked another woman?!" Claire snapped her voice turning from despair to pure range in a matter of seconds.

"I know, that's why I need to.. get rid of him. For not only your protection but for Madelyn's and because of what he did to my siblings." Elijah explains. Claire's eyes water, her cheeks already wet from having cried earlier. "Elskan?" He whispers inching closer to her.

"Are you positive you have to kill him?" Claire whimpers. He sighs and wraps his arms around her. She snuggles her head into his chest, the tears slipping down her cheeks.

The thought of Niklaus dying, and not coming back, was excruciating. To add to it, Elijah is the one who planned on killing him. Claire understood why he wanted to do it. She would never allow any danger to come near Madelyn and Niklaus was a possible threat but Claire didn't want him dead. She didn't know what to do when it came to Niklaus but she can't stand the thought of him dead.

"It's the only way to keep you and Madelyn safe" He whispers gently. "I know it hurts, it'll help if you just stay away from him. When we draw him out, don't seek him. Don't talk to him, don't do anything. Just stay away and let me handle everything." He instructs her. Claire clenches her eyes shut and grips his shirt.

Elijah sighs hating the fact that she was crying. He bends slightly and scoops Claire in his arms. He held her close as he slips in the bed. He reaches over and turns the lamp off. He slides down the bed more, resting his hand on the pillow.

Every whimper that comes from Claire is like a stab to his heart. It was like no matter how tightly he held her, it didn't offer her enough comfort. It was like he wasn't even there, she was still heartbroken.

Elijah was starting to doubt his plan to kill Klaus. If this is how Claire is when they're just talking about killing him, he couldn't imagine how she'd be when he's actually dead.

Claire didn't only cry because of Klaus, she cried for Finn and for Kol. She cried because she never got to meet them. She cried because she couldn't protect them.

"Please try and get some sleep" Elijah whispers. He kisses the top of her head, his arms tightening around her. "Everything is going to be alright, just trust me" He whispers.
