*Chapter Three* {The Night of the Comet}
"Well, I was talking to Grams, and she said the comet is a sign of impending doom." Bonnie told Caroline, Elena and Claire as they hung out outside of the Mystic Grill. "The last time it passed over Mystic Falls, there was lots of death. So much blood and carnage, it created a bed of paranormal activity."
"Ooo, spooky" Claire said grinning. She always enjoyed listening to Shelia's stories, she found them interesting. It could be argued that she as the only one in Mystic Falls that actually thought so, everyone else just brushed the older lady off as a crazy person.
"Yeah, and then you poured Grams another shot and she told you about aliens" Caroline commented sarcastically. Claire rolls her eyes and nudges Caroline which she ignores. "So then what?" The older Forbes sibling questioned Elena wanting juicy details about her and Stefan.
"So then nothing" She said shrugging. Caroline's shoulders slumped.
"You and Stefan talked all night? There was no sloppy first kiss or touchy feely of any kind?" She asked trying to extract something interesting.
"Nope" Elena said shrugging. "We didn't go there."
"Not even a handshake?" Caroline questioned desperate for answers. Claire smirked eating her pickles. She quite enjoyed her sisters failure to get something scandalous from Elena. "I mean, Elena, we are your friends. Ok? You are supposed to share the smut"
"We just talked for hours" Elena said hoping that would be enough for Caroline but at the same time, she knew it wouldn't.
"Ok, what is with the blockage? Just jump his bones already!" Claire snorted at her sisters bluntness. "Ok, it's easy" Caroline continued ignoring her little sister. "Boy likes girl, girl likes boy, sex!"
"Profound" Elena said smiling and then actually thinks about it before she got up.
"Where are you going?" Bonnie asked.
"Caroline's right. It is easy. If I sit here long enough, I'll end up talking myself out of it instead of doing what I started the day saying what I was going to do." Elena said.
"Use protection!" Claire hollered. Bonnie and Caroline laughed a little bit as Elena hurried away faster. "I'm getting more pickles."
"She sure loves those pickles" Bonnie commented. Caroline rolls her eyes.
"Tell me about it, she never ate them before the pregnancy and now Mystic Falls is about to have a shortage" Bonnie smiles and laughs a bit.
The next day three of them; Caroline, Bonnie and Claire, hang around the town square, not doing anything in particular. Caroline and Claire stuck together, as always, and talked to other people while Bonnie gathered programs to hand out for the Comet Festival. Elena eventually returned to help her out.
"Hey, I got some candles" Caroline said later that night as the comet flies over their head. Her, Bonnie and Clair link arms, Caroline in the center. Matt walks up to Elena and the three of them leave the two of the alone.
"I know your Grams isn't a fan of this comet, but damn is it pretty" Claire said looking up at the comet in the sky. Bonnie nodded in agreement.
Claire unlinks her arm from Caroline and helps light other peoples candles using her own. She smiles at the people she knows and ignores the judgment from others.
"Hey, a group of us are going to the Grill, wanna go?" Caroline asked coming up to her. Claire hadn't even noticed she had drifted from her sister. Claire was about to agree until she sees him standing with their group of friends.
"I think I'm gonna stay, watch the comet a little more." Claire said smiling at Caroline.
"What's wrong?" Caroline questioned picking up on something.
"Nothing, don't worry about it" Claire brushed off but Caroline knew better.
"My twin alarm is going off" Caroline said tapping her head. Claire rolled her eyes.
"There's no such thing as a twin alarm." Claire denied. Caroline crossed her arms and popped her him out.
"Oh really? And how exactly did I know that you and Tyler broke up before anybody told me?" Caroline asked. Claire held back a wince but Caroline was right. Her older sister knew before Claire told her about her breakup with the football player. Claire hadn't told anybody, Caroline just knew. "Or what about the time my car broke down and you just knew I needed you? Face it, we have twin alarms and mine is blaring right now." Claire rolled her eyes wishing Caroline would just drop it. "It's not because of Tyler is it?"
"I'm sorry, Caroline but I just don't wanna be around him right now... I'm not completely over him and I don't want to have anything to do with him" She said with an undertone of bitterness. Caroline looks at her sympathetically. She knew Claire probably still loves Tyler but he broke her heart and Caroline can understand.
"Ok, I'll stay with you" Caroline volunteered.
"No, you're not. You're gonna go hang out with them because I know this whole Comet thing is boring you." Claire said and Caroline gave her an innocent shrug. "Go, I'll be fine. I'll see you tonight or tomorrow morning"
"You sure?" Caroline asked.
"If I need you, I'm sure your twin alarm will go off." Caroline grinned widely and hugged her sister tightly. Claire hugged back before Caroline sped off to go with their friends. Claire sighed running a hand through her hair.
She looked back up at the comet. She doesn't know why but she suddenly felt as if she was the most loneliest person on the planet. That even though she was in the middle of a large crowd, she was completely invisible. The loneliness went so deep it was like it came from her very soul, like she wasn't complete.
Then it suddenly got better. The loneliness didn't go away but it become noticeably better and it confused her. She didn't understand the whirl wind of emotions. She would have blamed it on the pregnancy but she was having... episodes like this even before she got pregnant.
It was like clock work. The pang of loneliness would hit her like a freight train no matter what time of day, no matter where she is. Then, after a few moments, it would disappear and she would see him.
She felt a wave of hope flow through her as she looked away from the comet and her eyes scanned the crowd. She begged silently in her head to see him. Then she did.
Her eyes locked with his green ones. His skin, as pale as ever. His long black hair resting on his shoulders dressed in something not of this time. She felt connected to him. She felt like she knew him, like he meant something to her.
She desperately wanted to touch him but he would always disappear when she tried. She would give anything to hear his voice but no matter how much his mouth moved, she heard nothing. Though, his eyes seemed to tell her what she needed to know. She knew he yearned for her touch as much as she yearned for his. She knew he desired to hear her voice just as much as she desired to hear his.
She doesn't know who he is, why she's seeing him nor how she's seeing him but she wants to know. He feels so real but the logic in her mind tells her that he can't be. He's just a figment of her imagination just like the rest of them are. She didn't care though because as she looked into his beautiful eyes, she felt a little less alone in the world.
He only stayed a few moments before he disappeared from sight. The world around her seemed to come back to life. The noise around her that had fallen quiet when he arrived, seemed to be baring in her ears now. The people around her became clearer as she seemed to be brought back from her daze.
She averted her gaze to the ground, tears filling her eyes all too easily for her liking. She cursed her pregnancy for making it easy for her to get overly emotional. She wipes away her tears and weaves through the crowd. Her face lights up as she spots an ice cream seller.
She makes her way over there and buys a cookies and cream double scoop. She then made her way to a bench and began to enjoy the delicious dessert. Despite how hard she tries, her minds is consumed by ghost boy. She didn't feel right giving him a proper name. He had a name, she just didn't know it. She didn't want to assume what it was so she settled for ghost boy.
Once the ice cream was done, Claire headed home not knowing what Caroline's plans were for the night. When she got home, dread filled in her chest as she noticed her mother was home. She felt the nerves building up in her stomach and she forced herself to take a calming breath, though it did little to actually calm her down.
Knowing she couldn't avoid it forever, she entered the house. Her mother just so happened to be right by the door as she did so. The two woman stared at each other. Claire couldn't help but to be filled with hope. Hope that her mother would talk to her, that they would go back to normal. While Caroline tended to have a rough relationship with their mother, Claire liked to think they were close.
"Hi, mom" Claire whispered giving her a small smile. Liz looked like she was about to smile back but doesn't. She just looks away. She stays still for a moment before leaving and going to her room. Claire closes her eyes feeling the tears come back. She sniffles as she goes to her own room, instantly pulling out her diary.
September 10, 2009
Dear Diary,
Tonight was there was a comet in the sky. It was beautiful. The town had a festival and I even enjoyed myself, for the most part. That is until Caroline asked to hang out at the Grill and I would have if he wasn't going. I don't care if Caroline and the others hang out around him, I'm just glad they don't expect me to join them.
I saw ghost boy today. I miss him and I don't even know his name. I don't even know if he's real but I just... I have this feeling he is. I wanna tell Caroline but she's going to think I'm crazy just like she did the last time I told her. She doesn't ever believe me when it comes to them. I don't blame her, if I was her, I doubt I would believe me.
It hurt when he disappeared but for some reason, I feel like he's still with me even though I can't see him. This whole situation is strange but I like it, strangely enough.
However, his disappearance didn't hurt me nearly as badly as my mother did. I hate that she can barely look at me anymore. She won't say a word. I know I fucked up, I know I got pregnant with a guy who doesn't want anything to do with them. I know I've disappointed her but it's been four months, will we ever go back to the way it was? Will she want to be in their lives? Will she help me? I don't know... I need her now more than ever and she turns her back to me. I know she's ashamed of me, I know she wants me to get rid of them but I can't. I love them already, I love them too much to get rid of them. If I have to choose between them and her, I choose them... I just wish I didn't have to choose.
She was in the process of putting my diary away when she heard a scream coming from Caroline's room. Claire instantly race out of bed and go over there only to find her door locked. She instantly know that someone is in there with her but she can't stop the anxious feeling.
"Caroline? Are you alright?" She asked hesitantly. She felt like the scream she heard was more from terror than pleasure. She hears muttering but can't make out what they're saying.
"I'm fine, Claire, go to bed!" Caroline snips. Claire is slightly taken back but tries not to take it personally knowing she probably interrupted something. Not saying anything else, Claire returns to her room and falls asleep dreaming about them.
