*Chapter Thirty Seven* {The Last Dance}

Claire was walking down the hallway when someone grabbed her arm and pulled her into an empty class room. She stumbles slightly but the person keeps a hold of her and helps keep her steady. She looks at him and realizes it's Alaric, who Klaus is still possessing.

"Hello, sweetheart" He greets. He desperately wants to place a kiss on her soft looking lips but he restrains himself. He couldn't kiss her, not while in Alaric's body. Or else he'd feel tempted to rip Alaric's heart out for touching his mate, despite him not doing it of his own accord.

"You do realize how bad this'll look if someone finds us, right?" Claire asks raising her eyebrow at him.

"How do you do that?" Klaus mutters trying to raise a single eyebrow but failing miserably. Claire smiles and releases a small giggle. He smirks deeply loving the sound of her laughter. "I had to see you" He said caressing her cheek. "I could barely sleep last night. All I wanted was to be next to you, yet I couldn't have you." He mutters.

Claire sighs and raises her hand. She grabs his wrist and moves it away from her face. Klaus frowns but doesn't try to touch her again

"You'll have to get used to that." She whispers softly. Klaus sighs feeling wounded by her words. "Klaus..." Claire sighs and takes a step away from him. "We can't be together, not right now. I don't trust you, I can't be with someone I don't trust."

"I will earn your trust, you have my word" Klaus assures. Claire smiles at him softly. "You do believe me right? I will earn your trust."

"We'll see" Claire mutters. He sighs and shoves his hands in his pockets to prevent them from reaching out for her. "I'll see you around, Klaus" She gives him a small smile before leaving the room.

She sighs heavily as she walks away from him. All she wanted to do is turn around and run straight into his arms. She wanted to be around him, to never leave but she couldn't do that. She was being honest, she couldn't be with someone she didn't trust. If she couldn't trust him with Madelyn, then she can't be with him.

She then thought about the entire situation. She thought about Klaus killing Elena. She thought about Elijah trying to kill Klaus. She thought about how she knew Klaus was in town but nobody else, not even Elijah knew. She felt guilty for not telling Elijah but the moment she met Klaus, even if he isn't in his own body, she knew she didn't want him to die. She didn't know how to tell Elijah. She wasn't even completely convinced she would prevent Elijah from killing him, despite not wanting him to do it. If she wasn't sure Madelyn was safe, then she wouldn't stop Elijah.

After school, Claire returned home. She relieved Sarah from her duty and watched over Madelyn. She notices something up with her mom, she wasn't acting right but whenever she asked, Liz said it was simply work stress. Claire didn't believe her but didn't question her either.

She was hoping Elijah would be home but he wasn't. He was working tirelessly to find Klaus making Claire feel extremely guilty. Elijah could feel her guilt which made him suspicious but he never forced any answers from her. Even though he wished she'd be honest and truthful with him when he asked if something was wrong, he never forced her to tell him.

Claire was in her bedroom getting ready for the school dance. Caroline felt very excited about it. Claire hoped Elijah would be home soon enough to join her.

A knock on her window brings her out of her thoughts. She raises an eyebrow seeing Alaric standing just outside. He motions for her to come to him. She fights back a grin and walks over, lifting the window.

"What are you doing here?" Claire whispers.

"Don't go to the dance" He says instantly. Claire frowns her eyebrows. He sees she's almost completely ready to go to said dance. "You look beautiful" He complements. She smiles. "But please, don't go." He practically begs.

"You're going to have to give me a reason, Klaus" She whispers to him. He sighs looking into her eyes.

"Something's going to happen at the dance, I don't want you getting hurt" He said hoping she would leave it at that but of course she didn't.

"What's going on?" She asked him nervously.

"Your friend, Bonnie Bennett is planning on killing me. I plan on killing her first." Klaus tells her. Claire takes a step back.

All Claire could think about was all her childhood memories. All the sleep overs with Bonnie. All the girl talks, all the witch training, everything. Of course Claire wanted to get back at Bonnie for keeping Elijah from her but she didn't want Bonnie to die.

"Why do you have to kill her?" Claire whimpers. Klaus's heart breaks noticing the tears in her eyes.

"I'm trying to protect myself love" Klaus explains. "She has enough power to kill me which she plans on using during the ritual."

"There has to be another way" Claire whispers shaking her head. "Please don't kill her, Klaus. Elena already has to die but Bonnie doesn't." Klaus clenches his jaw quickly averting his eyes. "Klaus please." Claire whispers.

"I'm sorry, love" Klaus whispers looking at her. "Don't go to the dance" He orders before disappearing. Claire wipes away the few tears that slipped down her cheek.

Bonnie may have gone against her by keeping Elijah from her but Claire still cared about her. She may be planning on killing Klaus but so is Elijah. Claire needed to think of a way to get as many people out of this alive as possible. She was already heartbroken, though she didn't want to admit it, that Elena had to die.

She may be beyond pissed at Elena but just like with Bonnie, she didn't want her to die. She wanted to get back at Elena her own way but not kill her. But she knew she couldn't save Elena. No matter how much she wanted too, she couldn't. Klaus needed her, but he didn't need Bonnie dead. She knew she could at least save one friend.

"Claire, you ready?" Caroline asked coming into the room. "Everything alright?" She asked noticing the concentrated look on her face.

"I'm fine, lets go" Claire said leaving her room.

"Elijah isn't here? Did you want to wait?" Caroline asked.

"I don't need Elijah to have a good time." Claire said smiling at her sister. Caroline grins and the two leave the room.

"Mr. President" Caroline greets Matt teasingly. The couple were going as Jackie and JFK. Claire wasn't anyone specific.

"Hey" Matt smiles at her. Caroline tries to kiss him but he doesn't let her as he glances at Liz. Caroline laughs and the three teenagers leave.

They make it back to the school, everyone dressed in their 60s costumes. Matt and Caroline walk ahead of Claire. Claire keeps her eye out for Klaus and Bonnie, hoping to get Bonnie out before Klaus could kill her. She was planning on siphoning from Bonnie until her friend passed out and then get her somewhere safe until the ritual was over.

"And what are you doing here?" Klaus growls standing beside Claire.

"It's a school dance, what do you think I'm doing?" Claire snarks. Klaus glares at her and Claire looks at him innocently.

"Don't get in my way tonight" Klaus warns.

"Why? What are you going to do if I do?" She asked crossing her arms, the innocent look disappearing and being replaced by a challenging one. Klaus practically growls at her. "Bonnie's my friend, I'm not going to let you kill her." She snaps.

"So much for Elena being your friend." Klaus smirks. Claire glares at him.

"I care about Elena but if it's between her and you, I choose you." Klaus takes a step back not really expecting her to flat out say that. "I can't save Elena, I realize this. No matter how much it hurts, I won't stop you from killing her. But I can still save Bonnie and damn it I'm going to" She growls.

"You're going to go home and stay there until I say otherwise" Klaus tries to compel. Claire's eyes widen as she takes a step back. Klaus smirks thinking it had worked.

"You'd compel me?" Claire whispers. She fights back the urge to punch him. "I'm a witch you fuck-tard" Claire snaps angry tears coming to her eyes. "And even if I wasn't, how fucking dare you try to compel me." She growls. "Fuck you Klaus" She snapped.

"Damn it" Klaus mutters as Claire storms away. He watched her leave feeling angry with himself. He was so used to getting what he wanted, so used to people just bending to his will. Then there's Claire, Claire didn't listen to what he said. She didn't follow his order, she didn't shy away from him. He got in her face and she got right back in his, throwing the same shit with twice the fury. He's quickly learning he couldn't treat her like everybody else, cause if he does, he'll lose her and she's one person he cannot stand the thought of losing.

Claire looks around for Bonnie. She sees Matt and Caroline dancing. She couldn't help but to smile at them, glad Caroline was able to be happy. She then saw Elena with Stefan. She looked at Elena and felt a pang of guilt hit her. She truly didn't want Elena to die but Klaus deserves to break his curse and her loyalty to him already out weight her loyalty to Elena, which shocked Claire when she thought about it.

It took a while to find Bonnie but when she did, Claire went straight for her. It looked like Bonnie was going towards Elena but Claire got to her before she could. Bonnie looked at Claire in shock as she pulled her out of the dance.

"Claire?! What are you doing?" Bonnie asked trying to get out of her grip but Claire wouldn't let her.

"Sorry, Bonbon but I'm not letting you die." Claire said as she continued to pull her. "And I can't let you kill Klaus either."

"What happened to you being on our side? To wanting to stop Klaus and save Elena?" Bonnie asked. Claire stopped walking and glared at her.

"What happened to being my best friend? What happened to caring about me and my best interests?" Claire snapped. "No, you kept my soulmate away from me" She growled her grip tightening around her arm. Bonnie winces. "But even though you did that I still love you. I love Elena but there's no saving her but I can save you. You can hate me all you want but at least my conscious will be clear" Claire muttered before dragging Bonnie down the hall again.

"I'm not going to just abandon, Elena!" Bonnie snapped finally ripping her arm out of Claire's grip.

"If you help Elena you die!" Claire shouted. "If you kill Klaus I'll kill you." She told her with so much truth in her voice it made Bonnie step back. "Can't you see I'm trying to save your damn life? It kills me that Elena is going to die but there's nothing we can do about it."

"Yes there is" Bonnie stresses. "We can stop Klaus, if we stop him we save Elena."

"I'd rather Klaus live then Elena" Claire said. Bonnie's eyes widened and she took a step away from Claire.

"Who are you?" Bonnie asked frowning her eyebrows. "The Claire I know would never choose someone she's never met over her best friend she known her entire life" Bonnie snapped.

"Soulmates change your perspective, I don't expect you to understand that." Claire explained. Bonnie shakes her head not understanding the pull a soulmate had, how the strong the bond it.

"Let me save you Bonnie" She pleads.

"I'm saving Elena. I don't know who you are anymore. You're not the best friend I grew up with, she would never turn her back on someone she loves. I can't trust you anymore, Claire. I don't want to be friends with someone who turns their back on the people she used to love for people that she doesn't even know." Bonnie shakes her head walking away from Claire. Claire presses her lips together and clenching her eyes shut.

She didn't understand how her friends wouldn't see things from her perspective. A soulmate bond isn't easy for someone to understand if they haven't experienced it. Even though Claire didn't trust Klaus nor know him very well, she'd do anything for him. Like let her best friend die.

Klaus walked out from behind the wall. He had listened to Claire and Bonnie's conversation. He could hear the desperation in Claire voice and as he looked at her, he could see the heartbreak on her face. It angered him and he wanted Bonnie's blood.

"Alaric?" Bonnie asked coming to a stop. Claire's head snaps towards him. Klaus looks past Bonnie and to Claire. Their eyes meet, a tear falls down her cheek and Klaus is over come with anger.

"You should have just listened to Claire" Klaus tells her. "I would have let her save you but now you've hurt her and there's no way I can let you live after that."

"Klaus" Bonnie whispers in shock. Klaus smirks widely.

"Surprise" Klaus smirks. "Sweetheart" Klaus calls looking at Claire, who's still behind Bonnie. "Please go home" He pleads but doesn't demand. "I'd rather you not see this." Claire looks at Bonnie who turns to look at her, betrayal clear in her eyes. Claire hesitates. "Please, sweetheart" He begs softly. Bonnie instantly looks at him, shocked to hear him being so gentle.

Claire sighs wiping the tears off her face but nods. He smiles his shoulders relaxing. She walks past Bonnie and towards Klaus, towards the exit. Before she could leave, he grabs her arm and gently pulls her to him.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart" He whispers sincerely. She gives him a forced smile. He kisses her forehead softly. "Go straight home and stay with Elijah... Please" Claire nods not in the mood to argue. Klaus releases her and doesn't do anything to Bonnie until Claire is completely gone. "Hurting Claire's feelings, breaking her heart." Klaus tsks and shakes his head. His eyes meet Bonnie's, they harden and a murderous look comes onto his face. "Bad move" He growls before attacking her.

"Caroline" Claire said walking up to her sister.

"Hey- What's wrong?" Caroline asks instantly.

"I'm going home." Claire tells her.

"What's wrong, Claire?" Caroline tries again.

"It's just... It's been a long day" Claire mutters before walking around her. She walks out of the school. She doesn't get far until she hears a whooshing noise. She turns around and sees Elijah.

Elijah had been working with the witches but when he felt Claire's emotions start to go all over the place he knew something was wrong. Now, standing in front of her, seeing the tears on her cheeks and the heartbroken look in her eyes, he knew he was right.

"Come here" He whispers and she instantly goes into his arms. "I've got you, Elskan... I'm here" He mutters kissing the top of her head gently. "I love you"

"I love you more" She whispers, her voice cracking. He sighs and holds her tightly. He bends down slightly and picks her up in his arms. She buries her head in his neck, holding him tightly. He speeds away from the school and back to her house.

He helps her out of her costume and into something more comfortable. His hands caress her body in a comforting gesture. His kisses her neck lightly trying to distract her from her emotional pain.

Claire simply hugs him tightly. He leads them to her bed and cuddles her. She felt better with Elijah but there was still the guilt, the anger and the pain of losing Bonnie for good.

"What happened tonight, Elskan?" He whispers.

"Please don't make me talk about it" She whimpers.

"Never" He answers instantly. "I'll never force you to do anything, I promise" He kisses her head. "Why don't you try and get some rest? I love you" He whispers.

"I love you more" She responds quietly.
