*Chapter Ninety Three*

The mansion is oddly, eerily silent. Not even the hybrids dare utter a word. Claire's been asleep for the majority of the day. Even in her sleep she looks as if she's in unbearable pain. The remaining of the Mikaelson brothers dreaded the moment she awakes knowing the pain would only worsen.

Klaus and Finn lay on either side of her. Elijah stands by the window with a glass of bourbon in his hand. Henrik sits in a chair in the corner. All of them were grieving and all of them worried for Claire.

When Claire awoke, none of them noticed at first. She laid still on her side, facing Klaus. He was laying on his hand, a hand under his head. He seemed to be in deep thought.

"Was it real?" She whispers instantly gaining everyone's attention. Klaus' head snaps towards her. Tears instantly fill her eyes. "He's gone isn't he?" She whimpers.

"I'm so sorry, love" Klaus whispers turning on his side and pulling her into his chest. She clenches her eyes and holds onto him tightly.

"It hurts" She cries. "It hurts so badly." Klaus's gaze raises to look at his brother, Finn. Finn doesn't say anything. He moves closer to Claire and presses his head against the back of hers. He kisses her through the hair.

Claire isn't the only one who awoke with sorrow. A few doors down, Jeremy awakes. The spell Claire put finally wearing off. Unlike Claire, he awakes alone. At first he doesn't remember what happened and doesn't know where he is.

He sits up and looks at his surroundings. Slowly, everything comes back to him. He remembers Kol trying to cut off his arm. He remembers stabbing Kol and then remembers Claire begging him to stop. In the end, Kol ended up dead and Claire is completely heartbroken.

"What have I done?" He whispers putting his head in his hands.

"You didn't do anything" Jeremy's head snaps up. Caroline stands in the doorway. She had come to check on him and found him awake. "You didn't kill Kol, Elena did."

"Elena" He whispers. He frowns his eyebrows. He remembers Claire's look, her emotionless look as she stares at Elena then everything goes blank. "What happened?" He asks. "I don't... I don't remember."

"When Kol died her mind opened to Klaus, Elijah, Finn and Henrik. They all saw what happened."

"How can they see in her mind?" Jeremy asked.

"The mating bond." Caroline told him. "It connects her to them in more ways than you can imagine" Jeremy looks back down in his lap, the guilt eating him alive. "Jeremy, you didn't kill Kol, it isn't your fault" She said rubbing his back.

"Where am I?" He asks looking around.

"The Mikaelson mansion" Caroline said looking away from him as he looks at her.

"The mansion? Why am I here?" Caroline stood up and paced slightly. "Caroline, what is it?" She comes to a stop and turns to him.

"Claire... She killed Elena" Caroline told him gently. Jeremy frowns his eyebrows as what she tells him settles in.

"Elena... She's..." Jeremy presses his lips together and hangs his head. "She's dead?" His voice cracks. Caroline sits beside him.

"I'm sorry, Jeremy" Caroline whispers. Tears fill Jeremy's eyes. He tries to hold it together but slowly falls apart. Caroline pulls him into a tight hug. "I'm so sorry, Jeremy" Caroline whispers.

"Good God, what happened here?" Rudy asks walking into the Gilbert's residence. The house is destroyed, especially the kitchen. The house is tapped off and the only ones inside are Liz and Rudy.

"Whoever attacked, they knew about the supernatural" Liz told him. She motions for him to follow her and they walk into the kitchen.

"Is that...?"

"Elena Gilbert" Liz whispers looking at the grey skin covering Elena's body, a steak in her heart. Tears come to her eyes. All she could think about is little Elena, watching her grow up from a baby to now.

"Do you think there's any connection between what's happened here and what's happened to Carol Lockwood?" Rudy questions.

"I don't know" Liz whispers. Rudy glances at her. He sighs seeing the distressed look on her face. He walks around the kitchen.

"Looks like there was a fire" Rudy mentions. She looks at him and then to the ground where the ashes of Kol's body lay. "Do you know where Jeremy is?"

"No" She whispers. "I'll find him." Rudy nods.

"Keep me updated" He said before leaving. Liz sighs and nods. Before she can do anything, she hears something. She turns and sees Damon standing in the doorway. His eyes glued on Elena.

"No" Damon whispers. He speeds over to her and pulls Elena into his arms. "No, not you, please, not you" He cries holding her as tightly as he can.

"Damon" Liz whispers putting her hand on his shoulder. In an instant, he drops Elena on the ground and has Liz pressed against the wall, his hand around her throat.

"Who did this?" He growled angrily, a few tears falling down his face.

"I don't know, I don't know" She panics trying to get out of his grasp. Damon glares and his body tenses. Reluctantly, he lets her go and she falls to the ground. She gasps for breath, holding her neck while watching him. He walks back to Elena, scoops her body in his arms.

"When I figure out who did this... I'm going to tear them apart" Damon growled before disappearing.

"There has to be a way to bring him back" Bonnie said talking to Hanna. "We brought Henrik back, we can bring Kol back."

"We got lucky with Henrik, he was a boy when he died. The ancestors weren't angry at us for bringing him back, there were no repercussions. Kol has had over a thousand years to murder and destroy lives, the ancestors will not give him back without consequences" Hanna said.

"Then we deal with the consequences" Bonnie shrugs. "How bad can it be?" Hanna sighs. "Hanna, you should see Claire... she's completely destroyed... if it wasn't for her other mates, Madelyn and the baby she carries, she could be dead."

"I know" Hanna whispers hanging her head. "Listen, we got Henrik back because of the raw power Claire holds. If she uses that kind of power again, it will be too much and the baby will die"

"So, she either loses the baby or loses Kol?" Bonnie whispers.

"I'll try and find another way but there's no guarantee" Hanna tells her.

"We have to try" Bonnie said. Hanna nods in agreement. "Is there any way we can ease her pain now?"

"No" Hanna whispers. "The bond is broken... It's tearing her apart."

"I can't even imagine that" Bonnie said shaking her head. "Can she survive this?"

"She can" Hanna nods. "But the thing is... will she want too?" She asks. "Time is not on our side, it never is. Time will not heal her, it'll break her down until there's nothing left. A soulmate bond can be the most amazing, beautiful thing in the world but also the deadliest and most heartbreaking."

"She's strong... She just has to hold out until we can figure a way to bring him back." Bonnie said determinedly. Hanna gives her a small smile. "We can do this... we just have to think positively."

Claire couldn't stop thinking about the sight of Kol on fire. She couldn't feel anything other than the pain, the numbness, the emptiness, the loneliness. It all consumed her.

She wondered around Kol's room. She wanted to be alone, she needed it. She knew her mates were hovering just outside but she paid them no attention.

She walked beside his bed, her fingers grazing the comforter. She sits on the bed. Her eyes find a picture of Kol. Of Kol, Madelyn and herself on his bedside table. She reaches over and grabs it.

Slowly, she lays on her side, her eyes glued on the picture. She could feel the tears coming back. She clenches her eyes shut and holds the picture close to her heart.

"Come back to me" Claire whispers. "Please, I can't handle this" She whimpers. "I'll do anything, anything to have him back... Please" Claire begs to whoever is listening.
