*Chapter Forty Four* {The Reckoning}
"Why are you making me do this, Caroline?" Claire whined. The younger twin followed the older one down the dimly lit high school hallway.
"We're about to be seniors. These are the memories that will stay with us forever." Caroline repeated the same thing she said every time Claire asked her why they were doing this.
"Forever's a long time" Claire mumbles. Caroline rolls her eyes.
"Will you lighten up?" Caroline snipped turning to give her an annoyed look before walking ahead of her. Claire sighs heavily and follows her sister.
"Care, I'm sorry" Claire sighs. "I'll put in the effort" She said giving her an award winning smile.
"What is up with you? You've been moody all day." Caroline said crossing her arms.
"I don't know" She said honestly. "I just feel... on edge." Caroline pressed her lips together but nodded, accepting her sisters answer.
"Will you go find Matt? I have the perfect idea for him." Caroline grinned before practically skipping down the hallway. Claire rolls her eyes and turns to go find Matt only to be pushed up against the lockers.
"Hello, sweetheart" Klaus whispers his face in close proximity to hers. Claire's face instantly lights up as her entire body goes from being on edge to being completely in peace. It then made sense. She felt on edge because she felt Klaus was near.
Claire doesn't bother responding, she grips the back of his neck and pulls him into a kiss. He grins pressing her more into the lockers. Her other hand grips his shirt, needing him as close to her as possible.
He growls his hands going behind her thighs and lifting her. She gasps as his hips grind in between her legs. Their hearts race in their chests. It felt impossible to stop. After being separated for months, the desire for each other simply continued to build.
"Don't leave me again." Claire whispers with such desperation that his heart both swelled and broke slightly. "Please tell me you're back for good" She practically begs.
"I'm back for good" He promises unable to deny her anything. He realized, as he pins her against the lockers with her legs wrapped tightly around him, that he could never leave her again. The entire time he was gone, he was miserable. He tried to fight it, tried to focus on the task at hand but it was practically impossible.
He needed her and he found out just how much he did during the summer. All those months away from her he didn't know peace, the animal in him continued to try and claw it's way out, tried to force him to return to her. He should have listened, he should have returned earlier but now he's here and he wasn't going anywhere without her.
"Good" Claire smiles raising her hand from his chest to caress his stubble jaw. "I missed you."
"I missed you so much more" He nuzzles his head into her neck. Claire smiles and hugs him tightly, her hand leaving the back of his neck traveling up and through his blond hair.
"Why did you come back? Did you make your hybrids?" Claire questions. Klaus sets her back on the ground but keeps his body pressed against Claire.
Klaus didn't tell her about his failure. He didn't want to admit it but knew he couldn't hide it from her anymore.
"It didn't work" He said. Claire frowns her eyebrows. "And I think it has something to do with my doppelganger still being alive." He said giving her a pointed look. She smiles sheepishly. "Thanks for letting me know" He said sarcastically.
"Any time" Claire mutters grinning. He couldn't help but to smile and shake his head at her. "Let me make it up to you" She whispers her eyes going to his lips. He hums gripped her hips tightly.
Their lips reconnect. It's more controlled compared to the desperate one they had just shared. Claire couldn't imagine being separated from him again, she didn't want too.
"You're perfect" He muttered against her lips. She smiled snuggling her head into his chest. He hugs her, resting his cheek on her head.
He forgot what he had come here for. While 99% of the reason he showed up to the high school tonight was for Claire but there was 1% that needed to find Elena and fix his hybrid problem.
"You wouldn't happen to know where Elena is now, would you?" He muttered.
"She's around here somewhere" Claire muttered in response. Klaus takes a moment to try and listen for Elena. Within moments he's able to pinpoint where she is.
"You should go home sweetheart" He whispers.
"No" She snapped looking up at him. "I don't care what you're going to do but I'm not leaving. I just got you back." He listened as her heart sped up at the thought of them being separated again.
"Alright, alright" Klaus whispers caressing her face softly. "You don't have to leave but you stay right beside me" He said sternly.
"I don't want to be anywhere else" Klaus smirks and kisses her again softly. His hand lowers and grabs hers. Their fingers intertwine and they pull away. He takes a moment to simply take her in. "Come on, sweetheart" He mutters pulling her down the hall.
Claire walks as close to him as possible. He smiles down at her, giving her hand a squeeze. He then lifts it up to his lips, giving it a gentle kiss. She grins and bumps her shoulder into his lightly. He kisses the top of her head. He found it very hard to stop showing her affection. He loved seeing the smile on her face, the blush in her cheeks and hearing the giggle in her laugh.
"Shh, be quiet sweetheart." He whispers in her hear as they ear Elena. Her back is turned to them.
Claire didn't feel guilty anymore, not like she was for letting Elena 'die' in the first place. She didn't lead Klaus to her, she even kept her being alive a secret from him. Elena had gotten herself caught, Claire had nothing to do with it.
"Klaus" Elena gasps turning to him.
"You are supposed to be dead." She turns to run but he flashes in front of her, after letting Claire go. "What are we going to do about that?" He smirks, tilting his head. He keeps his eyes on her while holding his hand out for Claire.
Elena turns only now noticing Claire. She sees the smile on her face and the pure happiness in her eyes as she walks to him, grabbing his hand the second he's within reach. Klaus instantly pulls her to his side, she nestles closer to him.
The two ex-best friends look each other in the eyes. Elena looks at her feeling completely betrayed while Claire couldn't find it in herself to care. She didn't trust Elena and as the summer passed Claire found it very hard to care about her anymore. After everything her old friends have done to her, she felt done. She has her mates, most of them.
Klaus grabs Elena roughly while keeping a gentle hold of his beloved mate. He yanks Elena and calmly leads Claire down the hall. Even his expression seemed to be split into annoyance and complete peace.
"You put a rather large kink in my plans, sweetheart." Claire glares at Klaus for calling Elena sweetheart. She didn't like him using terms of endearment to other women. "The whole point of breaking the curse and becoming a hybrid was to make more hybrids. I haven't been able to do that. Now my bet is, it has something to do with the fact that you're still breathing."
"If you're going to kill me, just do it!" Elena snapped.
"Not until I know I'm right. But I do have my ways of making you suffer." Klaus shoving her through the door.
He glances at Claire to make sure she was alright and he wasn't hurting her. He was holding onto Elena tightly to prove a point but he didn't want to be rough with his beloved. She smiles giving his hand a reassuring squeeze, she had a feeling he was worried about that but he wasn't hurting her in the slightest.
"Attention, seniors!" Klaus announces in an American accent. Claire instantly looks at him in shock but found herself turned on, just like with everything else he did. Klaus could smell her arousal and could barely contain himself"You have officially been busted. Prank night is over. Head on home."
Klaus lets Elena go. He sends her a sharp look making sure she knew better than to run. He then releases Claire's hand. She only pouts for a moment before he's wrapping his arm around her waist, both of them desiring some type of physical contact. Claire cuddles into his side.
"You two, I remember you." Klaus says looking at Dana and Chad.
"I'm sorry, who are you?" Dana asks.
"Oh, don't worry, I wasn't in my right head last time we met." He tells her. "Lift your foot up, please, Dana" He compels. She lifts it uncontrollably. "If she drops her foot, Chad, I want you to beat her to death. Understood?" Chad nods. Neither of them have any idea of what is going on but unable to refuse his orders.
"Don't, Klaus, you don't have to hurt anybody." Klaus smirks.
"Oh, come on, love... Of course I do."
"How can you let him do this?" Elena snapped glaring at Claire. Claire just stares at her. She didn't agree with Klaus compelling Dana and Chad. She didn't know them well but she still knew them. They didn't have any part of this, this wasn't right.
Klaus notices the troubled look on Claire as she looks away from Elena and to the other students. He frowns slightly not liking her that concentrated.
He shifts towards her more, placing his free hand on her cheek. He successfully gains her attention. She instantly smiles and he returns it. However, his looks deep into her eyes and gets the feeling she doesn't like what he's doing but she won't voice her opinions. She had just got him back, she didn't want to say the wrong thing and lose him again.
"You can leave anytime, sweetheart" He whispers to her. She shakes her head.
"I'm not going anywhere" She promises. He smiles and kisses her softly. She instantly leans into his him, her free hand going up to his jaw. "I missed you" She whispers against her lips. She knows she's told him that already but she felt the need to say it again. She's only now realizing just how much she hated him being away from her and she desperately needed him to not do that again.
"Trust me, sweetheart" He whispers kissing her nose loving the way her face scrunches up. "I missed you so much more." He could feel the other three people in the room watching them intently but he didn't care. He didn't care about how much affection he was showing her, to him it wasn't enough. He'd never get enough of her and he knew that.
Now that he's in his own body and not Alaric's, he could sense Elijah's mark. While it didn't repel him like it does other supernatural creatures, it still irritated him. The only reason it irritated him is because he hasn't marked her yet. The entire world has proof she's Elijah and yet she had nothing from him. He knew he would change that soon, with her consent of course.
"Keep it up." Klaus encourages Dana.
"Where's Stefan? What did you do to him?" Elena questioned.
"Stefan's on a time out." Klaus grins. They all turn towards the doors as Bonnie and Matt enter.
"Bonnie, get out of here!" Elena tries to warn. Klaus lets go of Claire and speeds over to the Bennett witch.
"Ah, I was wondering when you'd show up. Now we can get started." Klaus grins deeper before looking at Dana and Chad. He glances at Claire. "Ah, Dana, why don't you relax? You and Chad sit tight" Klaus releases them of his compulsion. He keeps his gaze on Claire. Even though it's barely noticeable, she's relieved neither of them got hurt and for once, Klaus knew he made the right decision. "I assume you're the reason Elena's still walking around alive?" Klaus says.
"That's right" She says strongly. "If you want to blame someone, blame me."
"Oh, there's no need for blame, love. Just your witchy interference seems to have caused some undesirable side effects. And since you caused the problem, I'm going to have you find the fix." He tells her. Claire then notices someone, a woman, entering the room holding Tyler by the neck.
Claire instantly glares at Tyler hatefully. Any feelings she had for him were long gone. Any trust in him was destroyed. She hated that he's involved with Caroline and she wanted it to end.
"I'd like you all to meet my sister Rebekah. Word of warning... She can be quite mean" He said smirking in amusement at his own little jab.
"Don't be an ass" Rebekah snapped shoving Tyler to Klaus.
"Oh, I'm going to enjoy this" Klaus smirks deviously.
"Leave him alone!" Elena snapped. Klaus puts him into a choke hold, his eyes going to the witch, the Bennett one.
"I' going to make this very simple. Every time I attempt to turn a werewolf into a vampire hybrid, they die during the transition. It's quite horrible, actually." He grins before biting his wrist. He forces the wrist into Tyler's mouth, forcing him to drink his blood. "I need you to find a way to save my hybrids, Bonnie. And for Tyler's sake... You better hurry" He encourages before snapping Tyler's neck and throwing him to the floor.
Klaus sees the shocked looks on Matt, Elena and Bonnie's faces. He's hesitant to look at Claire, not knowing if she'd be upset or not. To his utter relief and slight confusion, there's a small grin, almost nonexistent, on her face as she looks at Tyler's body.
He then fully understood while his little mate looked like an angel from heaven, and could act like it too, there was some devil inside of her. She's strong and doesn't put up with shit. When she's had enough, she's had enough. She sees the beauty in revenge, or justice as she prefers to call it.
"You're more perfect the more I get to know you." Klaus whispers suddenly standing in front of Claire. She looks up at him and pulls him into a strong kiss. He grins and quickly dominates it. She grips his shirt, her back arching slightly.
When they pulled away, Claire didn't pay attention to the others. She simply kept her eyes on Klaus, and he kept his on her. They had their mission, they knew what they needed to do, all Klaus had to do was wait. What better way to wait then to worship his mate.
While the two of them share their moment, Matt tries to understand what's happening. He didn't know about mates and Claire's situation. Hell, he hardly understood vampires. All he knew was that he's seen Claire around Elijah, the two of them being quite affectionate towards each other and now here she is with Klaus.
He couldn't believe what he was seeing. For all he knows, Claire's getting very comfortable with the guy who tried to kill Elena and did kill his best friend, Tyler. In this instant, he lost all respect and all trust he had in Claire. Just like the others.
